Volume 3 + Chapter 90: Are You Crazy?!
“Say that again?” the doctor said casually, as if nothing was wrong. “Fine, Wright, I’ll tell you—it was just a rare miracle, that’s all.”
“You think I’d believe something like that?”
Wright stared at the doctor.
He needed to find out exactly what had happened during his last routine check-up—what had stabilized the dragon blood within his body.
Ever since becoming a hybrid, he had never felt like that before.
The human world needed a hero.
Just like the Sword Saints of old legend.
There has always been a gap between humanity and the other races.
Yet Wright Schubert, even when facing terrifying strength, never retreated, and forged countless legends.
He proved to everyone that humanity was not weak.
He himself had once been inspired by those stories of the Sword Saint, and chose to walk the same thorny path of a hero.
However, becoming a hero of humanity was not something that could be achieved by passion alone.
Cold reality had hit him hard.
No matter how hard he trained, his innate talent had limits—far from what he had hoped for.
Just when he was about to give up, he encountered an opportunity.
The hybrid experiment.
In order to become a hero like the Sword Saints, he volunteered for the experiment. The result was—he survived.
At the same time, he was told that the previous Sword Saint had gone to the Dragon Kingdom to challenge the Silver Dragon Queen… and died.
Thus, under the instructions of the Schubert family, he became the new Sword Saint of humanity—Wright Schubert.
As the only surviving hybrid, Wright gained incredible powers. But along with them came severe side effects.
If he overused the power of the dragons, the Dragonification would deepen, making it harder to control himself. If it exceeded a certain threshold, he would completely lose control—turning into a full-blown dragon.
If he couldn’t fully utilize his strength in battle, how could he possibly lead humanity?
He swore.
No matter the cost—humanity will defeat the dragons!
“Tell me everything you know. Don’t hide a single thing!”
Wright raised his hand—on the back of it, the mark of the Holy Sword glowed.
Come forth, Holy Sword Barumk.
A gleaming blue-bladed holy sword appeared in the Sword Saint’s hand—the symbol of his status.
He raised the blade and held it across the doctor’s neck.
The doctor squinted. “So this is how a hero’s sword is meant to be used?”
“Doctor, provoking me further won’t do you any good,” Wright said coldly. “I am Wright Schubert, Sword Saint of humanity. In the name of the human race, I order you to reveal everything you know—without the slightest concealment. This concerns the future of mankind!”
“That doesn’t scare me.”
“Then are you choosing to become a traitor to humanity?”
“Traitor? Hahaha! Hahahaha!”
The doctor burst out laughing, as though that word was the funniest thing in the world.
She would never reveal anything about Xia Yi.
If Xia Yi had merely produced a potion that suppressed Dragonification by accident, then that was fine—the doctor had watched the entire process and memorized the list of ingredients.
But if Xia Yi truly possessed knowledge beyond that of normal humans…
Then once the higher-ups found out, they’d definitely take her away. And at that point, they’d use any method—any—to force the truth out of her. They might even use forbidden techniques to extract her thoughts, destroying her mind in the process.
Even if she survived by some miracle, they might simply eliminate her—to erase all trace of her existence.
And the doctor—Claire—would never get to see her again.
The upper ranks of humanity already suspected Claire of harboring rebellious thoughts. They believed she refused to follow orders, held dangerous ideals, and had therefore begun to lose trust in her. They hadn’t replaced her only because her talent was still irreplaceable.
Claire thought—if Xia Yi really fell into their hands, that would be a waste. So much precious knowledge would be squandered.
Like killing the hen that lays golden eggs.
Those people only cared about the interests of humanity—making the race stronger.
But Claire was different. She didn’t care what happened to humanity. She was only interested in research.
If she could get her hands on Xia Yi herself, who knows what knowledge she might extract? That alchemical potion to suppress Dragonification might not even be the full extent of it.
Maybe… just maybe, this was the key to creating a being even stronger than the current hybrids.
Wouldn’t that be just like playing god—creating life?
And wasn’t that far more exciting than just making humanity stronger?
Just imagining it was enough to thrill her!
“Sword Saint, you and I are different. Don’t think invoking ‘humanity’s name’ gives you power over me. I just happen to be on the human side for now. From beginning to end, I’ve only cared about research. As for traitor or whatever—those labels don’t apply to me.”
Instead of backing down, the doctor leaned in. The edge of the Holy Sword had already cut into her skin—blood began to seep out.
“I have nothing more to say. It was just a rare miracle, that’s all.”
The Sword Saint’s eyes burned with killing intent. He could end her life right now.
But Claire wasn’t afraid at all. On the contrary—her blood flowed more, and her laughter grew louder.
“My lord Sword Saint, are you…?”
From outside the door, others who had followed Wright could no longer watch.
A hero of humanity, raising his sword against an unarmed woman?
“Damn you…!”
The Sword Saint slashed the Holy Sword down. But the blade only grazed the doctor’s side, slicing off a lock of her black hair and tearing the floor and wall apart in a single stroke.
“Detain Claire Morrison immediately. She is now a traitor to humanity and has committed grave crimes. She will be tried at a later date!”
“Heehee. You think that’ll scare me? Useless. This is just the rage of someone powerless. When the time comes and you need your body stabilized again, who’ll you have to beg to get out of prison? Me. And when you do… I won’t agree so easily.”
Claire mocked him without restraint.
Everyone was stunned. No one had ever dared talk to the hero of humanity like that.
She was nothing short of a complete lunatic.
Afraid Wright might lose control, the others rushed in and forcibly restrained Claire.
Wright stood in silence, staring at the wrecked laboratory.
What had really happened…?
That day, the doctor had a sudden idea and gave him a potion to drink—it had tasted awful. Then, for no clear reason, he blacked out.
None of the other alchemists knew what the potion even was.
That mysterious alchemical concoction—where had it come from?
Besides that… was there anything else unusual about that day?
Right!
There had been a girl who came to the Alchemical Life Division that day. She was received by the doctor herself.
Could she be connected?
“The day I came for my last check-up, a young girl came to the Alchemical Life Division. She was a student from Laurel Tree Academy,” Wright said, turning to the other alchemists. “Do you know who she was?”
They froze.
“A stranger entered the Life Division, and none of you know who she was?” Wright demanded. “Investigate it. That’s an order!”
“Please wait a moment, Lord Sword Saint. I’ll check immediately!”
An alchemist under the Life Division rushed off to check all the records from that day.
Wright waited anxiously. He was convinced there was something off about the way the doctor treated that girl.
Knowing Claire’s personality, she had no friends and never showed interest in people.
If she took interest in someone—it had to be about research.
A moment later, the alchemist came running back in a panic.
“That girl from Laurel Tree Academy—who was she? What’s her name? Speak!”
Wright had lost all of his usual composure. He was out of patience—he needed an answer.
But for some reason, the alchemist seemed terrified, unable to meet Wright’s gaze, his voice trembling.
“L-Lord Sword Saint… s-she’s…”
