Volume 3 + Chapter 78: Do You Believe In Gravity?
Xia Yi was still very confused.
She and the doctor were neither family nor acquaintances—complete strangers.
Today was essentially their first time meeting.
Her identity in the human world was nothing more than an unknown young lady of the Lawrence family.
There was no reason for this doctor from Rhine Alchemy to go this far for her.
Because of that, Xia Yi couldn’t help but ask why the doctor was helping—or threatening—her.
The doctor opened her mouth and said 1 word—
“Gravity.”
“Gravity???” Xia Yi tilted her head.
“Mhm, yes, gravity,” the doctor reminded her. “Let’s go, Xia Yi. Don’t be too late. If we hurry, you can still be back before nightfall.”
“Oh…”
Xia Yi followed the doctor out of the shop and boarded a carriage with her.
…
The carriage carried Xia Yi and the doctor away from Laurel City.
According to the doctor, they were heading to a local Rhine Alchemy outpost.
“Xia Yi, want some?”
Before Xia Yi could even respond, the doctor handed her another strawberry lollipop.
She had just finished one not long ago—and now the doctor pulled out another one, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth.
“You’re eating more?” Xia Yi asked, puzzled.
“Mhm.”
“Isn’t that bad for your health?”
“Not at all. If I don’t eat sugar, it becomes unbearable,” the doctor said.
“Eating sweets helps me stay rational.”
The more Xia Yi listened, the more confused she became.
Was this even real sugar?
Yet, watching the doctor sucking on the lollipop, she could almost feel the overwhelming sweetness.
Weirdo.
Xia Yi handed the lollipop back to the doctor.
“Don’t like candy?”
“I don’t eat things given by strangers,” Xia Yi replied.
“Hehe, Xia Yi, you’re such a good girl. You must usually listen to your mother, right?”
“Absolutely not!”
Xia Yi reacted as if someone had triggered a switch, launching into a flurry of retorts.
“What kind of joke is that? Me, listening to that person? Ridiculous! That’s never happened in my life!”
“Xia Yi must be really close to her family. I’m a little jealous. But you know, we’re not really strangers anymore. After all, you did call me big sister once.”
“Ugh…”
Xia Yi didn’t want to keep engaging in this nonsense.
“That ‘gravity’ you mentioned earlier—what did you mean by that?”
The doctor smiled upon hearing that.
“Xia Yi, do you believe in gravity?”
“Gravity is an objective truth. It doesn’t change based on human will. Whether you believe it or not, it exists.” Xia Yi answered seriously.
“I’m a little surprised by your answer, but that’s not quite what I meant.”
The doctor paused. “I believe that there is gravity between people. The stronger the gravity, the more drawn they are to each other. The gravity between you and me far exceeds that between others. That’s the reason behind everything.”
“…”
Xia Yi didn’t know how to respond.
This is way too philosophical, isn’t it?
She wasn’t a fan of these kinds of deep, abstract conversations and didn’t want to comment on them.
“Gravity brought us together,” the doctor said, gazing at Xia Yi.
Even though that’s what she said on the surface, the doctor was thinking something entirely different deep down.
This black-haired loli was really… strange.
In truth, the doctor hadn’t come to Laurel City to inspect the local alchemy material shops.
Her real target was Laurel Academy.
After learning that Wright had lost control at the academy, she became suspicious.
Something had definitely happened to that artificial sword saint.
But Wright was hiding something.
So, the doctor came to Laurel—and in the city, she discovered something shocking—
There was a dragon’s aura present here.
Others would never notice. Even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to comprehend it.
Most people in their entire lives had never seen a dragon, and if you’ve never seen something, you can’t understand it.
But the doctor was different. Her entire field of research dealt with such things.
The trace of dragon aura was extremely faint. It wasn’t from Wright—she was sure of it.
Whatever happened to Wright that day was absolutely connected to that aura.
And then, the doctor encountered Xia Yi.
A little girl buying rare alchemical ingredients from a shop, without even having an alchemist’s license.
However, the doctor didn’t detect anything strange on Xia Yi. She was completely human, with no trace of draconic traits.
Still, curious as ever, the doctor decided to use her authority to take Xia Yi away and test her a bit.
Who knows? There might be a surprise.
That was the doctor’s thinking.
…
“Xia Yi, we’re here. You can get off now,” the doctor said.
“Oh…”
Xia Yi rubbed her eyes and woke up.
The carriage ride had been boring, and the doctor was a total weirdo. Xia Yi didn’t want to talk to her much, so she took a nap.
She opened the carriage door and stepped out. What she saw was a large building.
It was the Rhine Alchemy Guild.
Generally speaking, if an alchemist wanted to practice in the country of Rhine, they had to hold an alchemist’s license, which was obtained by passing Rhine Alchemy’s professional exams.
In a way, Rhine Alchemy was equivalent to an alchemist’s guild. There would be many alchemists coming and going here.
In Xia Yi’s experience, human alchemists were often very strange.
Obsessively researching alchemy, they had all kinds of eccentric goals like:
“Seeking the Root,”
“Opening the Gate to Truth,”
“Creating the Philosopher’s Stone”…and other weird pursuits.
Her own alchemy teacher, Claire, was far stronger than human alchemist masters but didn’t act like a lunatic—just a normal office worker.
Maybe that’s just the vast difference between species.
That’s what Xia Yi thought.
She wasn’t particularly interested in alchemy and only studied it to pass exams.
“Let’s go this way, Xia Yi.” The doctor led her to another side.
The doctor walked to a side entrance of the guild, showed the guards her alchemist license.
The guards immediately saluted respectfully and allowed both of them in.
“Doctor, you seem pretty important,” Xia Yi said.
“The guards’ expressions totally changed when they saw your license. You’re not some high-up leader, are you?”
“Am I? I didn’t notice.”
Xia Yi didn’t know if the doctor was being humble, but judging from her expression, she didn’t seem to care about that kind of thing—probably only interested in her research.
Eventually, the doctor brought Xia Yi into an alchemy workshop.
There was no one else inside. The doctor asked Xia Yi to wait there for a bit, then left.
A long time passed, and no one came back.
“This doctor didn’t lure me here to do human experiments, did she…” Xia Yi leaned back in her chair.
“She said she’d be right back…”
Thud.
Just then, the door opened.
Xia Yi stood up and grumbled:
“Doctor, you’re finally back! I’ve been waiting so—”
But then, she stopped mid-sentence, her expression frozen in disbelief.
Why was it this person?!
The person who had just entered the workshop stared blankly at Xia Yi at first, then quickly questioned her.
“Answer me—why are you here?!”
