Volume 3 + Chapter 64: Promise
Xia Yi arrived at the headmaster’s office.
“Headmaster, are you there? This is Xia Yi – Lawrence.”
She knocked on the door and spoke from outside.
But the office remained silent—there was no response at all.
“Excuse me, student, are you here to see the headmaster for something?”
A passing teacher stopped to ask.
“Is the headmaster not here?”
“The headmaster left the school yesterday. He’s always very busy.”
Xia Yi had come to report something about the witch.
After thinking more carefully about her encounter with the witch, she felt it was something that needed to be reported. The Laurel Tree Academy ought to take it seriously.
After all, witches were dangerous.
“If you have something important, student, it’s best to talk to your primary instructor…”
“Mm-hmm, I understand!!”
Xia Yi nodded and went to find Biden instead.
Biden was a senior instructor in the Department of Magic, with his own private office—same status as Hill.
“Professor Biden, are you in?”
Xia Yi knocked on the door of his office.
The door was slightly ajar, and there was no response inside, so she peered through the gap…
Good grief!
That Biden was napping.
“Professor Biden!”
Xia Yi called out again.
But Biden continued to snore away.
“He really can sleep.”
Xia Yi pushed open the office door, walked right in, and stood before his desk.
“Pro! Fes! Sor! Bai! Den!”
“Zzz… Zzz…”
“No helping it, then.”
Xia Yi sighed and raised a finger, gathering magic at the tip. A small droplet of water formed in the air and landed right on Biden’s face.
“Ah…!!”
Biden cried out, startled awake by the sudden cold.
As he groggily woke up and saw Xia Yi in front of him, his irritation flared instantly.
“What are you doing?!”
“Sorry, Professor Biden. I have something important to report.”
“I don’t have time for this! Get out!!” Biden barked.
He knew who Xia Yi was.
After all, this troublesome little loli had become famous the very first day she arrived at Laurel Tree Academy. Not just the students—even the teachers had heard of her.
Biden had even reviewed the new student files and knew Xia Yi’s talent was actually pretty decent.
So on her first day of class, he had paid special attention to how she behaved.
The result? A massive disappointment.
This was a class taught by one of the top magic instructors in the human realm. People would kill for a seat—and Xia Yi didn’t even take it seriously. She napped during the lecture, got distracted, and even doodled in her notebook.
A girl with talent but no ambition, just here to coast through life at Laurel Tree Academy.
Biden had seen too many of her kind. Students who thought they were superior just because of some innate ability, and ended up wasting it all.
Biden refused to waste time on that kind of student. Laurel Tree Academy certainly wasn’t lacking for talent.
And now she had the nerve to disturb him, even throwing a water drop in his face.
“I’m sorry to interrupt your rest, Professor Biden. But I really have something important to report.” Xia Yi explained.
“Fine!” Biden held back his anger. “What’s this so-called ‘important’ matter?”
“I encountered a witch at Laurel Tree Academy.”
“A witch?”
“She—”
Xia Yi had planned to explain everything that happened with the witch.
Her thoughts were clear, her logic intact. She remembered the events vividly, and had no trouble forming the words…
But when she opened her mouth—it was like the words had evaporated.
“What exactly happened with the witch?” Biden frowned. “Tell me the whole story.”
“I… I…”
Xia Yi started to panic. Why couldn’t she say anything?
She quickly grabbed some paper and a pen from Biden’s desk, intending to draw it out instead.
But…
That didn’t work either.
Her hand hovered in midair, unable to make a single mark.
Biden, seeing her like this, grew even more irritated. In his eyes, Xia Yi was just making something up.
“Xia Yi, are you here just to stir up trouble?”
“No, I’m not! I really—!”
“Enough! You’re stammering and dodging, just like a liar!”
Biden cut her off, clearly fed up.
“Laurel Tree Academy has stood for countless years, fighting back against the Calamities, never once slacking! I personally oversaw the construction of our magical defenses against them. I designed every system myself. Do you have any idea how many contingency plans I’ve set up?”
“It’s true…!” Xia Yi said, aggrieved. “You must take this seriously!”
She realized now that the Witch’s Chatroom had some kind of binding force—it prevented her from revealing what had happened inside to anyone.
No wonder the witch hadn’t been worried when leaving—she knew Xia Yi couldn’t tell anyone.
What should’ve been a straightforward situation had now made her look like a liar.
“Enough, Xia Yi. Stop spreading panic at Laurel Tree Academy. Know when to quit.”
Biden’s anger grew.
“No one’s even asking you for proof, and you can’t even describe it in words. You can’t say what the witch looked like, how she got into the school, or what happened between you. Not one single detail! I’ve studied Calamities for decades, and I know exactly how their Apostles treat humans! Talking to you? Letting you live? Absolutely impossible! No one understands Calamities better than I do!”
“Your credits are already in the negative. If you keep spreading this nonsense, you’ll be punished again for disrupting campus safety and order—and you’ll be expelled!”
Xia Yi tried to speak but stopped herself. She sighed and found an excuse to leave Biden’s office.
———
Xia Yi wandered around Laurel Tree Academy, feeling frustrated and wronged.
She wanted to inform the academy leadership about what had happened.
The problem was—she couldn’t say a single thing about the witch. No matter what she tried, she’d just look like she was making things up, exactly like Biden said—and then she’d be expelled.
Before she realized it, she found herself standing in front of another office.
Seeing the nameplate on the door, she felt anxious—but like before, she knocked politely.
After receiving permission, she entered the office.
“Xia Yi, is something the matter?” Hill looked up at her.
“I…”
Xia Yi hesitated for a moment—but in the end, decided to try again, even at the risk of being misunderstood.
“I have something important to tell you, Professor Hill.”
“Go ahead, Xia Yi.”
“I encountered a witch at Laurel Tree Academy.”
“A witch?” Hill was clearly surprised. “What happened?”
“…”
Xia Yi fell silent. The binding was still there—she couldn’t say a thing, couldn’t explain it at all.
It seemed that even mentioning she had met a witch was the absolute limit.
“You can’t say anything else?” Hill asked.
“…It’s true. I’m not lying.”
Xia Yi lowered her head, feeling like she had zero credibility.
Right now, anyone looking at her would find her suspicious, right?
No one would believe her…
But then, from Hill’s mouth came an unexpected response.
