Volume 3 + Chapter 60: The Witch’s Invitation
Xia Yi noticed something extremely bizarre—as if no one else could perceive the existence of the witch. Everyone around her ignored the witch completely, as though she were nothing more than air standing there.
Even after Xia Yi repeatedly pointed her out to Norma, Norma still couldn’t see her.
It was as if, in this entire world, only Xia Yi herself was capable of seeing the witch.
“You… can see me,” the witch said, a strange smile slowly appearing on her face. “Your name… is Xia Yi, right?”
That smile carried with it a subtle, yet extremely dangerous signal.
She adjusted her black hat slightly, and her long, dark purple hair gently swayed in the breeze. Combined with her beautiful face, she exuded both mystery and danger.
Witches are the apostles of calamity.
That was something Xia Yi had just learned in this morning’s magic class. She absolutely must not be deceived by the witch’s outward appearance. At their core, witches serve only the will of calamity. Every one of their actions is driven by a single motive, to bring death, to destroy life.
This witch looked to be only around sixteen or seventeen years old, but Xia Yi wasn’t fooled by appearances. She remained on high alert, ready to act at a moment’s notice.
“It’s no use,” the witch said, lifting her hand, “others won’t be able to interfere with us.”
She snapped her fingers.
Then—something strange happened.
Everything stopped.
The footsteps of Laurel Tree Academy’s students, the noise of the bustling crowd, the pigeons flying through the air, the feathers falling from the sky…
All of it froze, as though time itself had stopped.
Like a montage effect in a film, the entire world lost its color—only Xia Yi and the witch remained.
“Norma?”
Xia Yi grabbed Norma, who was beside her, and shook her gently, trying to wake her.
But Norma remained in place, completely frozen like a statue, without the slightest reaction.
“No one else can hear or respond to us,” the witch reminded her. “Right now, only the two of us are conscious.”
Xia Yi frowned deeply.
This wasn’t time magic—she couldn’t even feel any mana fluctuations.
It had already surpassed the scope of normal magic.
To achieve this kind of effect… only a god-like being could manage something like this!
It must be some kind of special ability.
“As expected, Xia Yi is truly different,” the witch said, walking through the frozen crowd toward her. “Even in a situation like this, you remain conscious. If it were anyone else, they would’ve lost their minds the moment they saw me.”
A sharp glint flashed through Xia Yi’s eyes. She could sense the witch’s hostility. Without hesitation, she reached out and drew a weapon from the waist of a nearby student and instantly gathered her sword intent, attacking with a sword technique—clean and efficient.
Slash!
A flash of sword light struck the witch directly.
But she merely smiled, without moving a muscle.
The sword energy… passed straight through her body?
“What?!”
Xia Yi’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“None of that will work. This place isn’t the real world,” the witch explained calmly.
—A dream?
That idea crossed Xia Yi’s mind.
No, she immediately rejected it.
This didn’t feel at all like the time she’d encountered Miss Subcubus.
“I established a connection with your consciousness. This place is the realm of consciousness.”
“A one-on-one chatroom?” Xia Yi blurted out.
“You could say that,” the witch said with a smile. “Only those who have been chosen can enter the chatroom.”
That only confused Xia Yi even more.
What was wrong with this witch? Instead of thinking about destroying the world or bringing disaster, she came here just to… chat?
She had never had any prior interaction with witches. Not even during her days as a Sword Saint of the human race had she encountered one.
After all, dealing with witches was the responsibility of the Templar Order, not the Sword Saints.
“Why did you come looking for me?” Xia Yi asked, clearly puzzled. “You’re an enemy of all life—a servant of calamity.”
“Looking for you… not exactly,” the witch replied. “I simply sensed the presence of a similar kind of aura here at Laurel Tree Academy, so I came to check it out.”
“Similar kind of aura? Where?”
Xia Yi looked around.
But no one else was moving.
Could it be that the witch’s companion was hiding? Maybe they were socially anxious and too shy to come out?
“Where is this companion of yours? I don’t see anyone.”
“Xia Yi, you really love to joke… hehe~”
“Joke?”
Now Xia Yi was even more lost. How was this any time for jokes?
“I’m seriously asking. Witch, where is your companion?”
The witch walked right up to Xia Yi, leaning in slightly. “Who else would it be? It’s you, my companion~”
Xia Yi was so shocked she took several steps back.
Impossible.
Was this witch implying that she was also a witch?
“You’ve got the wrong person!! I’m not a witch!” Xia Yi immediately denied it.
“There’s no way I’d be mistaken,” the witch said, curling a strand of her hair around her finger, looking amused. “If you hadn’t been chosen by the will of calamity, how could you have entered the witch-exclusive chatroom? You carry a similar yet distinct aura from mine. We are both witches—witches of calamity.”
“…”
The amount of information was overwhelming.
“Tell me, Xia Yi,” the witch asked, “which lineage of calamity do you belong to?”
“Lineage? What do you mean by lineage?”
“You’re quite special, you know? Your body carries the favor of two different wills of calamity at once. I’ve never seen that before.”
“Can you not make things up—”
Xia Yi suddenly froze, the words catching in her throat.
Wait…
Witches are apostles of calamity, and behind every calamity is a Legendary Beast.
If the witch says lineage, and she means which Legendary Beast’s will…
Then Xia Yi had, in fact, encountered two Legendary Beasts before.
—Leviathan, the Beast of Envy.
In the ancient ruin city, after being bathed in the essence of blood, her consciousness had been connected to the Black Tide, which then affected Leviathan, driving it into madness.
—And Belial, the Beast of Sloth.
In the vast sea of trees of the Dragon Kingdom, she had entered the hidden sanctuary through the ancestral temple and encountered the sleeping Belial. Due to an accident, her blood had dripped into Belial’s eye, waking it from its slumber.
Under Belial’s gaze, she had fought the Pillar of the Demon God to the death—until she lost consciousness.
Could it be… through these events, she had come into contact with the auras of the Legendary Beasts?
And because witches obey the will of calamity, which stems from the Legendary Beasts, the aura on Xia Yi’s body made this witch mistake her for one of their own?
What a massive misunderstanding!
Xia Yi didn’t even know how to explain it.
“Xia Yi, come,” the witch said, extending her dark-purple-gloved hand to her, issuing an invitation.
Then she spoke a truly outrageous sentence—one that nearly made Xia Yi’s brain crash on the spot.
