Volume 3 + Chapter 59: The Witch
On the blackboard, a terrifying image appeared.
Previously, all the images had shown students from Laurel Tree Academy and knights from the Templar Order fighting against mutated magical beasts.
But the image that Biden just displayed was different.
It showed numerous dead humans, all brutally defeated by mutated magical beasts. Yet those very beasts had gathered together, circling around a young girl as if they were devout followers.
Although she appeared human on the outside, her entire body was drenched in human blood. That sickly smile on her face sent chills down everyone’s spine.
Someone immediately stood up and shouted, “Teacher Biden, what… what is that?!”
“This,” Biden said, “is the forbidden truth I want to tell you!”
Standing on the podium, Biden’s expression suddenly became solemn. His fists clenched tightly, his body tensed, and he bit his lip, saying nothing for a moment, as if gathering strength for what he was about to reveal.
Then, he uttered a name that fell like a thunderclap.
“Witch!”
The students all looked puzzled.
“Witch?”
“Like the ones from fairy tales?”
“No, this is way more terrifying than fairy tales.”
Xia Yi had vaguely heard of witches before.
They were defined by the Templar Order as heretics who posed significant threats to humanity. Such heretics were typically handled by the Templars, and the human Sword Saints didn’t know much about them.
“I’m guessing some of you still don’t understand what calamity is?” Biden began to explain.
“When life first appeared on this land, calamity came with it. Every time it manifests, it brings death to this land. It’s something that must never be touched. Even magical beasts that come into contact with a calamity, no matter how strong, will mutate, lose their sense of self, and become slaves to the calamity, spreading death wherever they go.”
Some students from noble backgrounds had heard of this before, thanks to their exposure and education.
But students from poorer families knew very little.
However, after seeing the image Biden had just shown, they all now understood just how terrifying a calamity truly was.
“Teacher Biden, can a calamity be destroyed?”
“Calamity is like a natural disaster—it cannot be destroyed. And their danger levels vary. Fortunately, calamities don’t occur often. Even when they do, they are usually within our control,” Biden replied.
Xia Yi knew what lay behind calamities.
They were Legendary Beasts.
Legendary Beasts were remnants of the old world. They naturally no longer roam freely in the current world, spending most of their time in slumber.
But if a Legendary Beast were to truly awaken, the level of calamity it would bring would be one of utter despair for the human world.
“Teacher, that girl in the image, the one you called a witch…?” one student asked.
“Witches are different from mutated magical beasts. Witches retain a certain level of self-awareness. They act according to a specific will, can communicate and even command mutated magical beasts to a certain extent, deliberately causing massacres to offer up death to the calamity they serve.”
“Although witches look like humans and once were human… in essence, they’ve already deviated from humanity. They stand opposed to all normal life—they are envoys of calamity.”
Biden’s tone was heavy, with a faint trace of deep-seated hatred toward witches.
“Students, as you know, I’ve taught many over the years, including some exceptionally talented ones. Those students had boundless potential, yet in the end, they perished in a calamity. The image you saw… was recorded by one of my students at the cost of their life…”
By this point, Biden was already overwhelmed with grief and could not go on.
“The reason I’m telling you all this is to warn you, as your magical studies deepen and your power grows, the road ahead will bring challenges you never imagined—perhaps even death! So you must prepare yourselves mentally from the very beginning. If you’re thinking of giving up, it’s best to do it early. A half-hearted attitude will get you killed!”
“We understand, Teacher Biden.”
Biden’s words deeply shook the students, even overturning some of their previous beliefs.
And under this atmosphere, the first lesson of the Magic Department officially began.
—
Ding ding ding.
As the class bell rang, Biden announced the end of the lesson.
The students slowly began leaving the classroom.
Just as Xia Yi stepped outside, she spotted a familiar person who was clearly waiting for her. The sight drew a lot of attention.
Well, well.
She couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“W-What are you laughing at?!” Norma, dressed in a maid outfit, said in embarrassed frustration. “This is your fault! You’re the one who asked me to wear this!”
“The Maid Knight has arrived.”
“No wonder they say citrus-flavored green tea can make others willingly become knights for her.”
“Aren’t they sisters or something? Isn’t that a little… scandalous?”
Hearing the crowd’s whispers, Norma looked like she was about to faint.
Xia Yi, however…
Well, she didn’t really understand what people meant, so she just filtered it out automatically.
“Norma, your work attitude is excellent. I’m giving you a perfect ten,” Xia Yi praised sincerely.
“You’re done with class, right?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“Then let’s head to the cafeteria,” Norma grumbled. “I’ve been waiting for you, and I’m starving.”
“Let’s go.”
Xia Yi agreed—it was about lunchtime anyway.
The two of them walking together drew plenty of attention wherever they went, but Xia Yi was already used to it.
“Xia Yi, I wonder if you’ll like the food in the cafeteria…”
Norma was speaking beside her as they walked, but Xia Yi suddenly came to a halt.
Ahead, under a wall, stood an unfamiliar girl. She wore a massive hat and clothing unlike anything from Laurel Tree Academy. A strange, ominous aura radiated from her, completely at odds with the surroundings.
She was sweet-looking, yet gave off the impression of a poisonous flower. She stood out starkly among the crowd. And although many people passed right by her, it was as if she didn’t exist—no one noticed her at all.
The girl stared intently at Xia Yi, as though she had come just for her.
“What’s wrong, Xia Yi?” Norma asked, confused by Xia Yi’s expression.
“Norma… you… don’t see her?”
“See who? What are you talking about?”
Norma followed Xia Yi’s gaze toward the wall but saw nothing.
The strange girl’s figure wasn’t reflected in Norma’s eyes at all.
This abnormal sight made a dangerous word rise in Xia Yi’s mind—
Witch.
“…”
The witch stared at Xia Yi, the corners of her lips curling into a subtle smile. Then, she did something completely inexplicable.
