Volume 3 + Chapter 57: Facing The Challenge
The night was deep and quiet.
Yue Liu hid under the blankets, unable to sleep, her mind restless as she kept thinking about Xia Yi.
Why do I care so much about Xia Yi?
It must be… because she’s my rival!
I want to defeat her. I want to conquer her. That’s why I’m so fixated on her.
Thinking this way, Yue Liu quietly called out a few times, testing the waters as she peeked out from under the covers. Xia Yi didn’t respond at all.
She was certain now—Xia Yi was fast asleep.
So, the Nine-Tailed Fox princess stealthily crawled over to Xia Yi’s side.
Staring at the girl before her, Yue Liu lost herself in thought—and a few very bold ideas began forming in her mind.
Xia Yi was a heavy sleeper, and not easily woken.
This had already been proven yesterday.
Back then, when Yue Liu had been held by Xia Yi, her tail relentlessly petted, she had cried out repeatedly—but Xia Yi hadn’t stirred at all.
Which meant one thing…
No matter what I do now, Xia Yi won’t wake up!
And she definitely won’t notice anything tomorrow!
“…No matter what I do… it’ll be fine…”
Yue Liu whispered the words to herself.
The moment this thought took root, her heartbeat quickened, her ears burning as she unconsciously leaned closer to Xia Yi’s face.
At this distance, she could see just how cute Xia Yi really was—her features held an undeniable charm, captivating whether one was attracted to boys or girls.
Especially in this defenseless state, her soft, pink lips…
Just as Yue Liu was about to press her face against Xia Yi’s, she suddenly froze.
Wait… what am I doing?!
She was startled by her own thoughts.
Her goal was to defeat her fated rival, to conquer Xia Yi.
But if she had to sneak around in the middle of the night to do something like this… could that even be called conquest?
Abruptly, Yue Liu remembered the warnings her master had given her.
“My heart… is in turmoil again!”
She suddenly felt ashamed of the thoughts she’d just entertained—and the actions she’d almost taken.
She was the princess of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan.
The Fox Clan and the Dragon Clan were enemies!
How could she treat her rival with such… attitude?
Absolutely unacceptable.
With this in mind, Yue Liu pulled herself back.
“Hmph, that was close! I almost fell for it—to set such a trap before me… as expected of my rival!” she marveled internally. “To try and break my will, to make me abandon my hostility toward you… what a terrifying scheme!”
She had just engaged in a battle of wits with Xia Yi—a clash of ten million stratagems! Thankfully, her skills were superior, allowing her to regain control at the last second. Otherwise, it would have been disastrous.
“Heh… hahaha… Interesting. Very interesting, my rival. So this is the challenge you’ve issued me? To test my resolve?”
Yue Liu sat up on the bed, striking a dramatic pose—one hand covering an eye as she let out a low, theatrical chuckle, as if possessed by the spirit of an overacting villain.
It was a good thing Xia Yi was still asleep. If she had seen the little fox pulling this stunt in the middle of the night, she would’ve been convinced Yue Liu had some serious mental issues.
“Master… I will not forget your teachings. I shall remember them always! But in the face of a challenge, I shall not retreat! I’ve decided, my rival—let us settle this once and for all! Witness the indomitable will of the Nine-Tailed Fox Clan!”
After spouting a bunch of nonsense, Yue Liu unleashed her true fox form.
The pink-haired fox girl in pajamas vanished—replaced by a small, pink nine-tailed fox.
Then, the little fox burrowed under Xia Yi’s blankets, ready to resist her rival’s trap with the unyielding will of her ancestors.
“Th-This is…!”
The moment she did, she was assaulted by Xia Yi’s scent—a faint, milky sweetness that was utterly intoxicating…
No! I must endure! I must hold strong!!
“You think such a trial can defeat me?!”
The little fox crawled into Xia Yi’s arms, pressing herself close—actively seeking an even greater challenge.
She had made up her mind.
She would defeat her rival… spiritually!
……
“Mmm… ah~”
Xia Yi yawned, slowly blinking her eyes open.
She felt like she was hugging a fluffy plushie—so comfortable…
Gently pet~
The black-haired loli instinctively stroked the little creature in her arms.
“Yip yip~”
The “plushie” in her arms let out a happy sound in response.
It was so amusing—just like the little animals she used to keep in the Dragon Palace’s garden—
Wait a minute.
Something felt off.
She had left the Dragon Palace and come to the human world. She hadn’t brought any pets with her—the cats, dogs, and even the little mouse had all stayed behind in the garden.
So… why was there a small animal in her bed?
As her mind cleared, she looked down—and saw a pink fox nestled in her arms, clinging to her.
Who else could it be?
“…Yue Liu?” she called out.
“Yip?”
Hearing her name, the little fox drowsily opened her eyes. Still half-asleep, she saw Xia Yi’s face and—acting purely on instinct—leaned in to lick her soft cheek.
“What… are you doing?” Xia Yi couldn’t help but ask, puzzled. “Are you still not fully awake?”
“…Eh?”
Faced with the question, the little fox snapped to full awareness—realizing exactly what she had just done.
Instantly, she was overwhelmed with shame.
“Waaah!!”
Yue Liu scrambled away from Xia Yi, transforming back into her girl form in a panic—only to lose her balance and tumble off the bed, landing butt-up with her nine fluffy tails splayed out toward Xia Yi like a blooming flower.
Xia Yi felt a sudden sense of foreboding and quickly lifted the blankets.
This time, thankfully, there was no “map” (Bedwetting) on the sheets.
It seemed the little fox had improved—no nighttime accidents this time.
But still… she really didn’t get it.
Shouldn’t Yue Liu hate her? She was always shouting about how they were rivals, about how she would do anything to defeat her.
So why had she woken up to find the fox snuggled against her?
“Yue Liu… what did you do last night?”
“I-I… didn’t do anything!” Yue Liu stood up, her eyes darting everywhere. “I just have bad sleeping habits…! I didn’t do anything weird, and I definitely didn’t have any weird thoughts!”
“Bad sleeping habits?” Xia Yi tilted her head.
Were “bad sleeping habits” enough to make her revert to her fox form and crawl into someone’s arms?
Unless…
Xia Yi narrowed her eyes, smirking.
“So that’s the kind of fox you are, Carrot.”
