Volume 3 + Chapter 4: The Mage And The Swordswoman
As everyone knows, in a fight between a warrior and a mage, the warrior tends to have the upper hand.
Though a mage’s magic is powerful, it takes time to cast due to chanting.
But warriors don’t need to chant—just close the distance and interrupt the mage mid-cast with basic attacks alone.
A mage can only truly unleash their power in a team setting, with others to protect them.
If a mage fights a warrior one-on-one, they’re bound to be at a disadvantage.
So, in Yue Liu’s eyes, the opponent provoking her and even showing fighting intent was nothing short of foolish.
“Iaido, Sakura Flash!”
Yue Liu’s figure suddenly blurred, vanishing from sight. In the next instant, she was already past Xia Yi’s side.
As she moved at high speed, her blade left its sheath—two crossing sword lights sliced through Xia Yi’s body.
“Hmph!”
Yue Liu struck a pose as she finished her move, back facing Xia Yi, slowly returning her sword to its sheath without even glancing back.
She had full confidence in her swordsmanship.
“This is the fate of those who oppose me—urgh!!”
“Firewall!”
Xia Yi unleashed a surge of fire-element mana, forming a massive wall of flame and blasting it forward.
Startled, Yue Liu quickly leapt downward. The giant fire wall struck the cruise ship’s wall, blasting a huge hole into it.
“How is this possible?! My ultimate move… had no effect?!”
Yue Liu stared at Xia Yi in disbelief.
“I clearly struck you earlier. You didn’t dodge. You should’ve already been down. How could you still cast a counterspell?!”
“Oh? Why indeed?” Xia Yi smiled. “I’m still trying to figure that out myself.”
In truth, at the very moment Yue Liu moved, Xia Yi had secretly used Chant Suppression.
After taking a transformation potion, Xia Yi became human. Though most of her dragon abilities were weakened, she retained some of them—still stronger than an ordinary human.
For example, as a silver dragon royal, she had a racial trait: she could cast spells without chanting—even in human form.
The effect was weaker, yes.
In dragon form, she could instantly conjure an Ice Shield for full protection. In human form, she could only manage a standard magic shield—not fully defensive.
But that was enough.
She just needed to anticipate Yue Liu’s attack and concentrate her defenses.
For most mages, this would be nearly impossible.
After all, mages specialize in spellcraft. Asking one to predict and counter an ultra-fast swordswoman’s Iaido technique would be absurd.
But Xia Yi was a Sword Saint among humans!
She could anticipate the attack, deploy a shield in advance, block the strike, and then launch a magical counterattack.
That’s what you call micro-control.
“Impossible! My Iaido technique… how could it fail?!”
Yue Liu couldn’t accept the truth.
The opponent was just a mere human mage—this level of enemy should have been an easy victory. How could she have missed her chance?
“I don’t believe it! Iaido: Sakura Flash!”
Yue Liu used her move again. Same technique, same speed—two fierce sword strikes landed on Xia Yi.
Even if the other woman had gotten lucky before, she couldn’t possibly survive two hits.
However…
Xia Yi merely staggered back a few steps from the sword strikes—completely unharmed.
Just like before, she used Chant Suppression to form a magic shield and blocked the attack.
“Ice Spikes!!”
Under Xia Yi’s control, the freezing energy solidified into icy arrows and shot at Yue Liu in unison.
“Why isn’t it working again—my attacks?!”
Yue Liu, defending against the ice magic, began to waver.
The tide of battle was starting to shift—in Xia Yi’s favor.
“Fire elements, gather and fuse! Unleash your wild and raging power—obliterate all enemies in your path!”
Xia Yi raised her staff. Flames gathered above her head like a blazing sun, instantly heating the air.
“Fireball!”
A series of scorching fireballs fell from the sky like meteors.
“Slash!”
Yue Liu sliced one mid-air. The explosion blasted searing hot air across the river, steaming the water and causing the cruise ship to rock violently.
Magic and sword energy clashed constantly across the deck—the fight between Xia Yi and Yue Liu was reaching its climax.
Boom!
After yet another explosive collision between sword and spell, someone could no longer stand idly by and rushed out, despite the danger.
“Ladies! Please stop fighting!! If this keeps up, the ship will sink—and we’re all going to die!”
“Ugh…”
Hearing this, Xia Yi lowered her staff and canceled the spell she was preparing.
Seeing Xia Yi back down, Yue Liu—though deeply unwilling—also sheathed her sword.
“Thank goodness! They finally stopped!”
The people aboard the ship all breathed a collective sigh of relief.
To be honest, they found these two girls even scarier than the bandits earlier.
“It’s only because of the circumstances that I’m stopping for now. Consider yourself lucky!” Yue Liu said, crossing her arms under her ample chest and turning her head away.
Xia Yi snapped back, “If I’d used my real strength, you would’ve lost ages ago.”
She hadn’t gone all out—because her current persona was that of a human mage, so she had stuck strictly to spellcasting.
She hadn’t even used her Rose Staff, relying only on basic spells.
If she used her true power—never mind holy swords—just using suppression magic and picking the right moment to whack Yue Liu with her staff would’ve been enough to make that pink-haired brat cry!
“You’ve got a mouth on you. Let me tell you something,” Yue Liu retorted irritably, “if I’d drawn my strongest weapon and used my true sword techniques, you’d have died ten thousand times over!”
“I’m just telling the truth!”
“Fine then! Show me your true strength—come face me head-on!” Yue Liu glared at Xia Yi.
Seeing things getting heated again, the other passengers hurriedly squeezed between them, forcing them apart. After much pleading and persuasion, the matter finally calmed down.
“Alright, can we set sail again now? I don’t want to waste too much time getting to the Rhine Kingdom,” Xia Yi said.
“Same here. I don’t want to spend one more second on this ship with her! I want to get to Rhine as soon as possible!” Yue Liu turned her head again in defiance.
Everyone turned to look at the captain.
He stepped forward—and what he said next drained the color from everyone’s face.
