Volume 3 + Chapter 39: Gram Wants To Duel
The Sword Saint summoned a holy sword—its blade pure white, enveloped in radiant light, utterly mesmerizing.
It was a weapon completely different in appearance from Gram.
Yet, as a Holy Sword Wielder, Xia Yi could clearly sense—it was indeed a holy sword.
Her black pupils trembled.
How could this be?
No matter how she tried to accept it, she couldn’t accept what was happening before her eyes.
Because from ancient times to now, humanity had only ever possessed two supreme legendary weapons, the Holy Sword and the Holy Spear.
These two weapons had left a deep, lasting mark on human history, and most importantly, there was only one Holy Sword and one Holy Spear.
Unless one stepped down or relinquished the role, there could only be one Holy Sword Wielder and one Holy Spear Wielder at any given time.
The Holy Sword Crest was the symbol of a Holy Sword Wielder’s qualification—only by gaining the recognition of the Holy Sword could one obtain it. Through this crest, one could form a deep bond with the sword and summon it at will.
Right now, Xia Yi was still the Holy Sword Wielder. She could still summon the one and only Holy Sword—Gram—at any time.
So why…
Why did this imposter before her have a Holy Sword Crest and could summon a holy sword that she didn’t even recognize?
The Sword Saint raised the holy sword high, displaying it before the crowd.
“This is the Holy Sword that accompanied Lord Sword Saint in countless battles, defeating mighty foes, isn’t it?!”
“I’m so lucky! I actually get to see the Holy Sword up close like this!”
“In the face of this indestructible sword, even the Dragon Queen had to retreat!”
People didn’t hold back their admiration for the Holy Sword.
The news that the Sword Saint had revealed a Holy Sword spread rapidly, drawing more and more people to witness its brilliance.
Xia Yi still hadn’t fully processed the situation when an unexpected event occurred.
A sharp pain flared in her hand.
Gram…
Oh no!!
Xia Yi’s expression changed drastically. She could clearly feel Gram was extremely displeased and wanted to show itself. The Holy Sword Crest had already appeared on the back of her hand. If she summoned the Holy Sword here, her student identity at the academy would be over!
Retreat, retreat, retreat!!
She quickly covered the back of her hand, suppressing the crest as much as she could, blended into the crowd, and hurriedly slipped away into a hidden corner.
“Ugh—!”
Xia Yi could no longer hold it back—Gram appeared.
It glowed with light, and the frequency of that glow clearly radiated anger.
Her old friend was clearly furious and desperately wanted to duel the other holy sword!
“Wait, wait, old friend—don’t be rash!!”
Xia Yi frantically tugged at the sword, as if holding back a large, excited dog, trying to keep Gram from flying off and clashing with the other sword in an epic duel.
“Please, I’m not prepared yet! Give me a chance—next time, I swear, I’ll bring you and shatter that fake Sword Saint’s holy sword into pieces! Just trust me this once!!”
She pleaded sincerely, her voice nearly cracking. Her eyes shimmered with tears of panic—she really didn’t want her identity to be exposed here and now.
“…”
Gram reluctantly calmed down and turned around, hovering in front of her.
“Really! I swear it’s true! Things are different now!” Xia Yi quickly reassured the Holy Sword.
Gram flashed twice and disappeared, the Holy Sword Crest fading as well.
“Phew…”
The little princess let out a breath of relief. That was close—she had almost blown her cover in front of everyone.
…
Meanwhile—
“What is this…?!”
Just moments after revealing the Holy Sword to the crowd, the Sword Saint felt a jolt in his heart. His Holy Sword Crest began to pulse in resonance.
But it wasn’t resonating with his own sword—which meant…
Could it be—another Holy Sword Wielder was nearby?!
“Where? Where are they?!”
The Sword Saint lost his composure. He shoved the surrounding crowd aside, trying to track the other wielder’s location.
“Lord Sword Saint, what’s wrong?”
“Don’t block me!!” he roared at the enthusiastic crowd before him.
His shout left everyone stunned. The area immediately fell silent.
The Sword Saint used his power to sense the resonance from the crest, trying to pinpoint the other Holy Sword Wielder.
He no longer cared about appearances. Using his movement technique, he leapt into the air, darting across rooftops, zipping through the Laurel Academy buildings—until he reached a secluded corner.
But by the time he arrived, there was no one there.
He stared at the empty spot, doubt creeping in.
“Could it… have just been my imagination?”
…
“Farewell, Lord Sword Saint!”
At the gates of Laurel Academy, the students and teachers were gathered to see the Sword Saint off.
Though his earlier outburst had been a bit shocking, his entourage later explained that he had just returned from a dangerous monster subjugation mission and was under a lot of stress—he had mistaken some magical traces in the academy for a monster’s presence and reacted out of instinct.
Everyone accepted the explanation without much fuss. After all, no one had ever seen the Sword Saint act like that before. Given how exhausting his duties were, it was understandable—a mere footnote in the day’s events.
As the Sword Saint was about to leave, Xia Yi had also arrived at the scene.
She stayed hidden in the crowd, but her sharp eyes noticed something suspicious.
Among the Sword Saint’s entourage, one person wore the insignia of Rhine Alchemy.
“Why is someone from Rhine Alchemy here?” Xia Yi was shocked.
Rhine Alchemy belonged to the Morrison family, one of the four great noble families of the Rhine Kingdom.
On the surface, it was an organization led by alchemists and supported by mages, tasked with overseeing alchemy and providing medical aid within the kingdom.
For example, if an alchemist wanted to sell their potions in the Rhine Kingdom, they had to go through Rhine Alchemy’s approval—selling without a license was illegal and punishable by the Holy Templar Order.
But from what Xia Yi knew in the past, Rhine Alchemy was far from clean. As someone formerly from the Schubert family, she couldn’t help but wonder.
Why would they be working with someone impersonating the Sword Saint?
It was deeply suspicious.
Xia Yi frowned in thought.
…
“Huff… huff…”
Inside the carriage, the Sword Saint—clad fully in armor—clutched his head, breathing heavily and irregularly.
He had slightly released his power earlier to locate the other Holy Sword Wielder, and now he was struggling to keep it in check.
“Lord Sword Saint, are you alright?” someone from the entourage asked with concern.
“…”
The Sword Saint didn’t reply, just lowered his head.
The attendant stepped closer, worried for his condition, and through the gaps in the armor, he thought he glimpsed the Sword Saint’s eyes—
They weren’t human eyes.
Just then, the carriage jolted slightly, and his helmet fell off.
When the attendant saw the Sword Saint’s true face, he was terrified out of his mind. He collapsed onto the floor, brain blank, body trembling in fear.
“L-Lord Sword Saint… how could you possibly be…?!”
