Volume 3 + Chapter 14: Hungry
“Ahahaha! Chicken soup is ready!”
George carried a pot of chicken soup into the dining hall and placed it on the table.
“Everyone, come try some! I made it myself!”
“Uncle George, are your cooking skills… really okay?” the kids asked doubtfully.
“Hmph! I’ve trained hard, you know! Even Teacher Martha has approved of my cooking. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!”
George immediately used a ladle to scoop out a bowl of chicken soup and set it in front of the child who had just questioned him.
Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, the child took a sip of the soup, showing a look of enjoyment on his face. After finishing it, he even smacked his lips in satisfaction.
“So? How is it?” the other kids asked.
“This chicken soup is super tasty!” the child replied with high praise.
“Uncle George, I want some too! I want chicken soup!” the children all shouted.
“Alright, alright, don’t rush—there’s enough for everyone.”
As he said this, George ladled another bowl and placed it in front of Xia Yi.
“Miss Xia Yi, please have a taste!”
“Okay.”
Xia Yi was a little surprised—this guy George… actually learned how to cook?
She gave it a try.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t bad.
“Not bad at all.”
“Haha! What an honor!” George laughed cheerfully.
After that, Martha and the other teachers at Spring Breeze Orphanage brought out the rest of the dishes, and dinner officially began.
The table was filled with food, more than enough to meet the kids’ nutritional needs.
It was indeed a huge improvement compared to the past.
Back then, Xia Yi and her childhood friends didn’t have much to eat. Meat was rare, only seen during holidays—if they were lucky.
“Miss Xia Yi, does this suit your taste?” Martha asked. “It might be a bit different from what you usually eat.”
“Mm, I think it’s pretty good!”
“You really are different from typical nobles,” Martha remarked.
“Am I?”
“You are!” George chimed in. “Miss Xia Yi isn’t the least bit arrogant—completely different from those snooty nobles who look down on people with their noses in the air!”
Xia Yi didn’t know how to explain herself.
After all, most nobles with even a bit of status definitely wouldn’t interact so casually with commoners like she did.
Human nobles were, by default, taught to think themselves superior. Looking down on others was considered normal behavior.
Someone like Xia Yi was an oddity.
“That just shows Miss Xia Yi received excellent education and has remarkable character,” Martha stepped in to help smooth things over.
“Yeah! I truly believe Miss Xia Yi is destined for greatness!” George nodded solemnly.
“I think so too! Big sis Xia Yi is amazing!”
“It’s really fun playing with big sis Xia Yi!”
“Way more fun than with Uncle George!”
The kids all chimed in with compliments, making Xia Yi a little embarrassed.
“Hey hey hey! You’re going to hurt my feelings if you say that!” George pretended to cry.
“We didn’t say you’re bad, Uncle George. It’s just… you’re not cute, and you’re not as pretty as big sis Xia Yi!”
“You little brat, so you like pretty big sisters that much, huh?” George snorted. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m a grown man and already an uncle. No way I can turn into what you want. After all, how could a man ever become a cute little girl?”
“Uh…”
Xia Yi suddenly felt like she’d been shot while lying down.
George… the truth is, I actually did…
Ughhh.
She really didn’t want to admit it.
But truth be told, she should be about George’s age by now—an uncle, basically. Yet here she was, turned into a young dragon girl—a little white-haired loli with a big tail.
Fate sure knows how to mess with people.
As the laughter and chatting continued, dinner at Spring Breeze Orphanage came to an end. The kids began helping the teachers clean up the table.
But Xia Yi was facing a huge crisis she hadn’t anticipated.
What do I do?! What do I do?! What do I do?!
She sat in her seat, clearly distressed.
The reason was simple…
She wasn’t full.
Dragons and humans just had completely different appetites.
What would be enough to stuff a grown human man? For a dragon, it was just a bite—maybe something to get stuck in your teeth.
As a high-tier species, dragons had enormous energy needs. Even lying around doing nothing, they burned through food like crazy.
Xia Yi hadn’t expected that even after using the transformation potion to become human, her appetite would still be the same as when she was a dragon.
Dinner was nearly over, and she was still starving.
So hungry, so hungry, so hungry, so hungry!!
And the worst part—she couldn’t let her hunger show, not if she wanted to keep playing the part of a human girl.
After all, on the outside, she looked like a little loli. If she started eating more than someone like George—dozens of times more—wouldn’t that completely blow her cover?
“Big sis Xia Yi, I’ll help you wash your dishes!”
A child ran up to her and took her tableware away.
“Wait—”
“Hm?” the child turned back, confused. “What is it, big sis Xia Yi? You’re not full yet? But I saw you eating the whole time—you didn’t even stop!”
“No no, I just meant—don’t run too fast. Be careful.” Xia Yi forced a smile.
“Okay! Got it!”
The child took her dishes and left.
Now what?
If I don’t eat enough, I’ll DIE!
Xia Yi’s mind was racing.
Suddenly, she had a great idea…
Right! Why didn’t I think of that sooner?!
Hehehe…
—
Late at night.
Xia Yi snuck out of the guest room.
Even though the Spring Breeze Orphanage had been renovated, the layout hadn’t changed. Relying on her memories, she navigated the building under the cover of darkness.
She tiptoed quietly through the orphanage.
It was already late—well past bedtime for the children. The teachers, needing rest for the next day’s lessons, wouldn’t be staying up either.
“If I’m remembering correctly… it should be right here.”
Xia Yi pushed open a door.
Yes! This is it—the kitchen!
Sure enough, Spring Breeze Orphanage had leveled up. They were now using magical cold storage—an ice-element magic stone fridge—for food preservation.
Her plan was simple: sneak into the kitchen late at night and scavenge food. Since no one would be around, she could stuff herself freely!
She could even use fire-element magic to heat things up on the spot.
Magic really was amazing—so much more convenient than swordsmanship!
Gurgle…
Xia Yi’s little stomach growled loudly.
“Hehehe, time to dig in!”
Of course, she wouldn’t just eat for free—she planned to leave plenty of money behind as compensation.
—
“Xia Yi, resurrected!”
Xia Yi felt fully revived. After leaving enough money behind, she exited the kitchen, ready to head back and enjoy a blissful sleep.
But just as she opened the door, her expression froze on her face.
Martha was standing there.
She had clearly been waiting for Xia Yi to come out, yet hadn’t tried to stop her.
“Sister Martha, I…”
Xia Yi’s mind scrambled for an excuse to explain her actions.
But then, Martha softly spoke a single name, and in that moment, Xia Yi’s heart plunged into chaos.
