Volume 3 + Chapter 146: An Unexpected Encounter
“Captain, wake up!”
Frank shook James who was lying motionless on the ground.
“Ugh… what…?”
James opened his eyes to see Frank’s face. He sat up, holding his forehead as his mind remained somewhat muddled.
He vaguely remembered seeing Xia Yi at a disadvantage and unleashing his ultimate move to defeat her.
And then…
“Ah!!”
It came back to him.
Xia Yi’s so-called “disadvantage” had been completely feigned – she’d instantly defeated him in retaliation.
That scheming loli’s displayed strength was simply beyond his current capabilities.
“What happened to that campus bully Xia Yi?”
James grabbed Frank’s shoulders urgently.
“You and Brand didn’t fail my expectations, right? You defeated Xia Yi and reclaimed our magical beast badges?”
“Well…”
Frank hesitated, finding it difficult to explain.
Not only had they failed to continue fighting, they’d surrendered and even switched sides to actively serve…
At his wit’s end, he could only look to Kobe beside him.
“Prison Boss, you explain it to the captain!”
“Sigh!”
Kobe exhaled deeply.
“Captain, we lost. The Little Evil Dragon’s strength is too overwhelming – we’re simply no match for her. Even teaming up with Brand was useless.”
“Little Evil Dragon?” James grew even more confused.
“Mmm, it’s the nickname everyone’s given Xia Yi now because of her behavior!”
A terrible premonition grew in James’ heart. “Don’t tell me others also…?”
“Exactly. Every team that entered the Ruins Forest has fallen victim, all defeated by Xia Yi who took their top-tier magical beast badges. She’s forcing all teams to cooperate with her to maintain equal scores, otherwise she’ll manipulate the scoring to isolate uncooperative teams and push their scores to last place for punishment.”
After hearing Kobe’s explanation, James couldn’t help but exclaim, “That’s practically a little evil dragon!!”
“Now you understand how she got that nickname.”
Both Kobe and Frank looked displeased.
But what could they do?
When everyone saw Xia Yi farming entire teams like common monsters, they knew defeating her was nearly impossible.
No one wanted to be last, so it was better to collectively remain in second place.
If everyone was second, then no one would be last or face punishment.
“Captain, Xia Yi’s camping the exits! Farming everyone like mobs! She single-handedly changed the entire nature of this monthly exam!” Frank explained.
James’ emotions were complicated.
On one hand he was furious, yet on the other, helpless.
Too weak! Without power!!
First he got instantly defeated, then got instantly defeated again even when serious.
The gap in strength was enormous.
Why would a mage’s swordsmanship reach such heights? It’s like she’s the Sword Saint’s personal disciple, completely unreasonable!
“Whatever, let’s head to the designated gathering area.”
James could only accept this outcome, fighting was hopeless.
Kobe and Frank agreed.
In this situation, no team could sneak off to hunt magical beasts for points. All teams in the Ruins Forest were monitoring each other, anyone caught trying would be reported and face the Little Evil Dragon Xia Yi’s punishment.
Before reaching the gathering area, James took a look and confirmed Xia Yi was truly exit-camping. Not just that – others were helping her camp too. He witnessed another team having their badges stolen and forcibly recruited, seeing how completely she controlled everyone.
“Damn it, if only I were stronger…!”
James clenched his fists resentfully. He couldn’t bear to keep watching or he’d explode. Best to leave.
As they neared the gathering area, Kobe suddenly stopped.
“Ah!!”
“Ah!!”
“Ah!! Coming, it’s coming!!”
Kobe became strangely excited, his face contorting into something between laughter and tears – extremely eerie.
“You… okay?”
James patted his shoulder.
“AAAAHH!!”
Kobe shrieked and ran off in another direction.
“Prison Boss, wrong way!! That’s not the academy’s gathering area!!”
Frank shouted after him.
But Kobe paid no heed, simply sprinting madly.
“Don’t tell me Kobe’s going to hunt magical beasts alone for points?” Frank’s expression darkened. “Captain, this is bad! If other teams find out, Xia Yi will target us.”
“Let’s catch him first!!” James gave chase.
“Right!”
Frank followed.
However, as a Magic Department student, Frank’s stamina couldn’t match Kobe and James, a swordsman and martial artist. Unconsciously, he fell behind.
“Wait for me! You’re both… running… too fast!!”
“Stop!!”
No matter how James shouted, Kobe ahead ignored him.
Left with no choice, James increased his speed seriously, catching up to Kobe’s side.
“Stop already! Snap out of it!!”
James placed a hand on Kobe’s shoulder.
“Wahahaha!”
But unexpectedly, his good teammate suddenly elbowed James square in the face.
James fell to the ground, getting up while clutching his bleeding nose, roaring: “Have you lost your mind!?”
He was genuinely angry now, ready to get serious.
Yet Kobe had stopped before a small grove, staring blankly ahead without speaking.
The previously violent guy now stood eerily silent.
Somehow, this scene made James’ hair stand on end, his heart pounding wildly with intense foreboding that something was about to happen.
“Huh? You finally… stopped… running…!”
Frank arrived panting heavily, hands on knees nearly collapsing from exhaustion.
But seeing Kobe’s state, he too became like James – not daring to breathe loudly.
All three stared in one direction.
From within the grove emerged a girl’s silhouette, her dark purple hair particularly eye-catching.
The girl stepped out from the trees, several ominous-looking seeds floating above her palm.
The moment they saw the seeds, the trio nearly lost the ability to think, their attention completely captivated.
The girl smiled softly and asked in a gentle voice.
“Do you desire power?”
