Volume 3 + Chapter 140: Three-Person Team
In a certain part of the Ruins Forest, a team of three high-achieving students was challenging the strongest grass-type monster—the Rampaging Tortoise!
This Rampaging Tortoise had a massive body, covered in a sturdy shell overgrown with lush green plants.
Not only did it possess top-tier defensive capabilities, but it could also freely manipulate vegetation.
Aside from being slightly slow, breaking through its defenses head-on was nearly impossible. Its hard shell could withstand both magical and physical attacks, dragging opponents into its own rhythm. Once it restrained enemies with its plants, it would crush them in one strike when they showed an opening.
It was an incredibly powerful monster that combined defense and control into one.
The three students in this team were top performers from the Fist Combat, Swordsmanship, and Magic departments.
This lineup sacrificed the safety net of a healer or a frontline tank, maximizing damage output instead—a high-risk, high-reward team dancing on the edge of a blade.
Naturally, their goal was to stand out in this monthly exam.
First, they swiftly took down the Stormfang Wolf, then immediately moved to the next battlefield—the monster with the highest points among grass-types.
However…
They hit a wall against the Rampaging Tortoise.
Despite all three specializing in pure offense, the tortoise’s defenses were too strong. Its excellent crowd control pinned down the two frontliners (Swordsmanship and Fist Combat), allowing it to attack the backline mage.
After several waves of assaults, the team gradually fell into a disadvantage.
“Are we going to fall here…?”
“After defeating the Stormfang Wolf, challenging the strongest grass-type monster might have been too much…”
“It’s too early to talk about giving up!! We’re the Three-Person Team, damn it—!!”
The Fist Combat student, named James, was also the team’s leader.
As the team faltered, he stood up, clenched his fists, and roared.
Even though injured, his fighting spirit burned just as fiercely.
“Our teacher taught me—we can’t back down now! If we do, it’ll leave endless regrets in our youth!!”
“James…”
The Swordsmanship and Magic students, named Kobe and Frank, were already knocked to the ground. But seeing James’ passion, they were reinvigorated.
“Follow my lead!! Let’s charge one more time!!”
James took his stance and rushed at the Rampaging Tortoise again. The faint aura around him suddenly turned a deep red.
Kobe and Frank exchanged a glance and sprang into action.
The Rampaging Tortoise roared, and vines shot out like a swarm of snakes, wrapping around the two.
“Kobe! Attack the tortoise with me—we’ll break its defense!” James commanded. “Once its guard is down, Frank can unleash his magic! Don’t forget—our goal is to reach the pinnacle of Laurel Academy!!”
“Got it!!”
Kobe gritted his teeth, gripping his twin swords tightly. He prepared to unleash his strongest sword technique—
“Lightning Whirlwind Slash!!”
Crossing his swords, he spun rapidly, his body twisting like a cannonball midair. The whirling blades kicked up a storm of wind, slicing through the tortoise’s vines and clearing a path for James.
This technique wasn’t something just anyone could perform—it demanded extreme physical conditioning and sword mastery.
Kobe was one of the Swordsmanship Department’s elite, a gifted genius who had always been overshadowed by Anthony in the past.
Now that Anthony was gone, he was determined to shine in this exam!
Fueled by sheer will, his Lightning Whirlwind Slash surpassed its usual power, nearly evolving into a full-blown tornado!
“Thanks, Kobe!”
James seized the opening, charging straight at the tortoise and throwing a punch with everything he had.
“Furious Thunder Fist!!”
But when his fist struck the tortoise’s shell, it didn’t break through. His arms went numb from the recoil, nearly losing all sensation.
This thing’s defense is insane…!
Still, he stayed calm and shouted, “Frank!! Cast your spell now!!”
“I—I can’t!!” Frank panicked.
“What’s wrong?!”
Kobe and James turned—and froze in shock.
Frank was completely entangled in vines, the green tendrils binding him so tightly he couldn’t cast a single spell.
The two frontliners realized—while they were fighting, the tortoise had secretly burrowed vines underground to ambush their mage.
“GROOOAR—!!”
The Rampaging Tortoise roared, clearly enraged by their attacks. It unleashed an even fiercer assault, vines surging like a swarm of serpents, ensnaring both Kobe and James.
Kobe was exhausted from his ultimate move, unable to dodge. James, too, was trapped, with no room to escape.
“We’re done for…!!”
James paled.
Now, all three were at the tortoise’s mercy.
Just as defeat seemed inevitable—
Whoosh!
An ice sword shot through the air, slicing apart the vines with a gust of wind before slamming into the tortoise’s shell.
“SCREEE—!!”
The tortoise shrieked—its supposedly indestructible shell cracked!
Then, three fireballs blasted into its exposed body, giving it zero time to react.
Without its shell, its flesh couldn’t withstand the flames. It collapsed, nearly charred to a crisp.
In an instant, the battle had turned—someone had intervened.
“Kobe, I’ll help you!”
James, ever the caring leader, tore free and rushed to Kobe’s aid.
“Phew… I made it.” Kobe exhaled in relief.
Together, they freed Frank from the vines.
Then, they saw their rescuer—a petite figure they never expected.
Xia Yi?!
The trio’s emotions were mixed.
On one hand, she’d saved them. Without her, they might’ve been eliminated from the exam.
On the other, after all their effort… she’d stolen the kill. That didn’t sit well.
Still, James, ever the diplomat, signaled for his team to let him handle it.
“Thank you, Xia Yi. Since you defeated the Rampaging Tortoise, its emblem is yours.”
“Mm, good.”
Xia Yi picked up the monster emblem, securing the highest grass-type points.
But this wasn’t enough for her.
“Xia Yi, we’ll take our leave now… The exam’s still ongoing.”
After thanking her, James prepared to lead his team away.
But Xia Yi stopped them.
“Wait.”
“What is it?” James asked, puzzled.
The little princess smiled—bright and sunny.
“You guys were the ones who took down the Stormfang Wolf earlier, right~?”
