Volume 2 + Chapter 94: Oranges
Lucius fixed his gaze on Xia Yi.
Because right now, she was the representative of the Dragon Royal Family. Her response next would determine the stance of the entire dragons’ royalty bloodline.
Now that they knew these upstart nobles were plotting rebellion, what would Xia Yi choose to do?
“If there are fools out there who dare to challenge the authority of the Dragon Royal Family, then I don’t mind wiping them all out,” Xia Yi declared coldly. “If we allow them to continue acting so recklessly, won’t they try to stage a full rebellion someday? We must snuff out the sparks of insurrection before they ignite. The brilliance of the Silver Dragon bloodline must descend upon Corolle completely!”
She issued her proclamation.
“Xia Lulu simply can’t be bothered to play with these people—but they took that as confidence that they could oppose the royal family? The age of Hero Frey is long past. It’s time they recognized this truth. This is the realm of the Silver Dragon Queen.”
“Excellent!!” Lucius clapped loudly again and again, full of praise. “Your Highness, your decision is absolutely correct. The Cavendish family will fully support you in purging these arrogant upstarts!”
“Your Highness, no matter what you decide, I will stand by your side. That is my duty as your personal maid,” Serra added, declaring her position as well.
However, she didn’t seem too pleased with Lucius.
“Father, are you serious?”
“Of course! You think I’m joking?” Lucius raised an eyebrow.
“It’s just… for someone like you to make such a clear-headed decision and fully support the princess—that’s the real surprise.”
Serra didn’t pull her punches when it came to her father.
“Serra, you truly misunderstand me. I’ve always been clear-headed!”
“Oh? You mean all those years, as head of the Cavendish family, doing nothing in the face of the rise of the new nobles, indulging in luxury and pleasures, drinking and womanizing, even going to their territory to support their businesses?” Serra fired off accusation after accusation.
Any noble with a shred of pride would have felt at least a little shame.
After all, over the years, Lucius had been nothing but a complete and utter scoundrel.
But not only did he show no embarrassment—he actually sounded rather justified.
“No, no, no, Serra, you just don’t understand. There’s an old saying: ‘If you want to destroy them, you must first drive them mad.’ I was accelerating their downfall, see—pushing them to reveal their ambitions sooner, so Her Majesty could realize these parasites needed to be purged.”
“That’s your excuse for squandering the family fortune?”
“I was acting!” Lucius said with pride. “I deliberately behaved like someone with no ambition, so the new nobles would lower their guard against the Cavendish family. The tides of an era aren’t something one family can resist alone. If we’d been too confrontational, the new nobles would’ve seen us as a threat and taken us out already. Then we wouldn’t be here to assist the royal family in the coming purge.”
As he spoke, he puffed out his broad chest, clearly proud of his “sacrifice.”
“Daughter, I’ve endured humiliation, swallowed my pride, and lived in hardship for so long. But now that Her Highness the Princess has appeared, all our family’s patience and restraint hasn’t been in vain!”
Serra pressed a hand to her forehead. She clearly didn’t want to keep this conversation going—afraid she might really beat her father to death if it continued.
Even Xia Yi was stunned.
That’s some world-class shamelessness!
Lucius’s mouth was tougher than magic crystal ore.
“Your Highness, do you have any plans in mind?” Lucius asked.
“I was just thinking…” Xia Yi asked directly, “If I went to the Imperial Capital and asked Xia Lulu to send troops here, what do you think would happen?”
“…The new nobles would probably catch wind of it and flee with their assets,” Lucius replied honestly. “They’ve clearly thought about their escape routes and have contingency plans in place. That said, abandoning their operations here would be difficult for them to accept. So it’s just as likely they’d resort to something more extreme. After all, military authority on the southern border is essentially in the hands of the New Chamber of Commerce now. The armed forces here… most of them already answer to their people.”
“I see,” Xia Yi murmured. “Looks like I’ll need to come up with another plan. Corner a rabbit, and it’ll still bite…”
She recalled Serra’s battle at the Ascension Casino against the Cangqing Gang—and an idea gradually began to take shape in her mind.
…
The Elvin Family.
“Father!”
Oba stormed into the room and looked toward his father, Arland Elvin.
The head of House Elvin was currently lounging with a beautiful woman in his arms, lazily enjoying a bunch of grapes.
But these were no ordinary grapes. Imported from foreign lands, their flesh was plump and juicy, their flavor exquisite—these were the kind of tribute-level fruits that only the royal family of the Dragon Kingdom could afford to enjoy.
But times had changed. Under the leadership of the New Chamber of Commerce, upstart noble houses like the Elvins were now able to live like emperors in Corolle.
“What is it, my son?” Arland turned his head lazily.
Oba was seething. “It’s about the Ascension Casino. The Cavendish family stirred up trouble there—we suffered massive financial losses, and on top of that, we lost face!”
“Are you joking, son? The Cavendish family? They’re nothing more than decayed bones in a tomb. Lucius has long since given up. Why would he dare oppose the New Chamber?”
“I’m serious, Father. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
Oba ground his teeth in frustration.
“Everyone in the city probably knows by now. If you don’t believe me, just send a servant out to ask anyone on the street!”
Realizing something was wrong, Arland murmured a few words to the woman beside him, and she quietly excused herself.
Now only father and son remained in the room.
Once the outsiders were gone, Oba gave a full and detailed account of what had happened at the casino.
When he finished, Arland let out a cold chuckle. He grabbed an orange from the table and began peeling it slowly.
“The Cavendish family really doesn’t know what’s good for them. To think they’d actually dare provoke us like this. I was even thinking of giving them a chance to cooperate with the New Chamber. But now… there’s no point keeping them around. This debt—we’ll settle it today.”
“Father, the Cavendish heir has returned. Will that make things complicated? She seems… strong.”
“Strong?” Arland scoffed. “So what if she is? All the armed power here is in our hands. What’s she going to do, take on a fully equipped security force by herself?”
“You’re right… Now that you put it that way, even with her, the Cavendish family can’t change the situation. I guess I really lost my head earlier—I wasn’t thinking clearly.”
“But what interests me…” Arland’s eyes narrowed slightly, “is that silver-haired dragon girl you mentioned.”
“She… what about her?”
“Her appearance is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
He finished peeling the orange, sliced it, and popped a piece into his mouth.
“If we kill that girl… her death could be the very thing that lets the New Chamber of Commerce rise to an entirely new level.”
