Volume 2 + Chapter 183: Your Heart Wavers
Xia Yi and Xia Lulu returned to the Dragon Palace.
It just so happened to be time for afternoon tea.
Xia Lulu invited Xia Yi to the rear garden for tea. Once the royal maid team had everything prepared, she dismissed everyone else, leaving only the two little silver dragon girls.
“Xia Lulu, what do you want me to do in the human world?” Xia Yi asked bluntly.
Xia Lulu picked up a cup of steaming black tea and spoke slowly, “In the human world, there exists a threat to dragonkind.”
“Humans can threaten dragons?”
Honestly, Xia Yi hadn’t expected that.
To dragons, humans were an utterly weak race—not even one of the higher races.
The so-called eternal enmity between humans and dragons was really just a one-sided belief held by humans.
As a human Sword Saint, Xia Yi had been raised with that kind of worldview like everyone else.
But after challenging the dragons, she realized it was completely off…
It turned out dragons didn’t even care about humans.
So for the Silver Dragon Queen, ruler of the dragon race, to now say that there was a threat among humans—and that she was taking it seriously enough to investigate—was completely unexpected for Xia Yi.
“Xia Lulu, are you serious?”
Xia Lulu waited until the tea had cooled slightly before taking a small sip. She nodded.
“I’m completely serious.”
“But haven’t dragons always looked down on humans?” Xia Yi asked with confusion.
Xia Lulu’s previous teachings had fully reflected the pride of dragons. She had told Xia Yi that dragons were the strongest of the higher races, and the rest weren’t even worth mentioning. Humans, who weren’t even a higher race, were like ants—weaker than mice.
A bunch of ants plotting how to overthrow dragons? That could only be laughable.
For dragons to be alert and treat humans seriously was in itself bizarre.
Xia Lulu seemed to see through her daughter’s confusion. “Daughter, in the Great Tree Sea, you saw the truth hidden in the long river of history. You learned that during the mythic era, humans were enemies of the dragons, right?”
“Yeah, I saw all of that.”
If Xia Lulu had just said something like this out of the blue, Xia Yi might not have understood.
Humans as enemies of dragons? Unbelievable.
But Xia Yi had gone to the Great Tree Sea. In an ancient ancestor’s temple, she had seen records of the mythic age—and uncovered a hidden history.
Humans had once been part of the higher races, and the powerful “Human Kings” had even rivaled the Dragon Kings of the mythic era.
It was almost unimaginable.
“In the mythic age, humans were enemies of the dragons. Back then, the Human Kings were worthy opponents for the Dragon Kings. Although the dragons ultimately defeated the humans during the great war of the higher races—leading to the humans’ decline—the truth is, humans were once a real threat.”
Xia Lulu put down her teacup.
“The humans of the mythic era and today’s humans are as different as a forged sword is from raw iron ore. However, according to the information Lucia gathered during her time in the human world, it appears that in the Kingdom of Rhine, the humans have—somehow—recovered an inheritance from that mythic era.”
“What kind of inheritance?” Xia Yi asked curiously.
Even though she had once been an heir of one of the four great families of the Rhine Kingdom, the Shubert family had never truly treated the human Sword Saint as their own—only raised her as a tool. As a result, she had never been exposed to the humans’ inner secrets.
“That’s what I want you to investigate,” Xia Lulu said. “Lucia couldn’t dig any deeper—doing so would risk exposing her identity as a dragon. What she was able to learn is that humans have already made progress using that inheritance. The higher-ups in human society are quite pleased with the results.”
“I see.”
Xia Yi now had a general understanding.
The humans of the mythic age had indeed been strong, even considered one of the higher races. If modern humans had obtained some legacy from that time and made progress with it…
Then, by human logic, they were probably trying to revive the glory of their lost status as a higher race.
That would explain why Xia Lulu was concerned.
“There’s an enormous gap between humans and dragons,” Xia Lulu continued. “We dragons are born with magical affinity that humans could never match. For instance, Red Dragons can unleash fire-elemental dragonbreath without even studying. Meanwhile, a human mage might spend their entire life just to master a spell of that level.”
Xia Lulu looked at her daughter.
“According to the historical records I’ve found, during the mythic era, humans deliberately steered their magical research in a direction different from dragons. In some fields, their work became incomprehensible—so much so, it couldn’t even be called magic anymore.”
Xia Yi listened, a bit dazed.
Back when she was a human Sword Saint, Leight Shubert had talent only in swordsmanship. When it came to magic, “clueless” didn’t even begin to cover it.
So naturally, she had no idea what kinds of things powerful human mages had been researching.
That realm had always been far beyond her understanding.
Fortunately, her magical talent now was already quite high. She could investigate this matter properly.
“This time, when I go to the human world… will Sera come with me?” Xia Yi asked.
Previously, whenever she was sent on a mission, her personal maid Sera always accompanied her to help. If not Sera, then it would be Lucia.
But Xia Lulu shook her head.
“This time, you’re going alone. Daughter, this is a trial. If you run into danger, no one will be there to help like before.”
Xia Yi nodded in understanding. Even though no one would accompany her, she showed no sign of retreat—still full of confidence.
“Don’t worry! I’ll complete this solo mission splendidly! Xia Lulu, just stay home and wait for my good news!”

A nine-tailed fox girl dressed in shrine maiden robes sat cross-legged on a boulder beneath a waterfall, completely focused, trying to enter a state of no-mind.
With her eyes closed, Yue Liu listened to the crystal-clear water falling from above and crashing into the pool below.
She attuned herself to every sound in the world, trying to sense the flow of all living things.
It’s here!
Suddenly, Yue Liu’s eyes snapped open. She swiftly gripped her katana—Sakura Moon—and unleashed a blinding arc of swordlight that seemed to cleave the waterfall itself.
In the brief instant the waterfall broke, she spotted a single cherry blossom petal—completely untouched—floating through her sword strike.
“I…”
Her expression shifted slightly.
Then, a voice came from behind the fox princess:
“Yue Liu… your heart is wavering.”
