Chapter 89: Mu Lin: I Worked So Hard at Cultivation, What’s Wrong with Enjoying Myself?

Not long after arriving at Anping Taoist Palace, Chu Lingluo’s mother uncovered Yan Yunyu’s true motive for her enthusiastic involvement—every action Yan Yunyu took showed zero care for her own daughter, aiming purely to seize first place.

To secure victory, Yan Yunyu had arranged the still-"weak" Mu Lin as Chu Lingluo’s teammate. For the same goal, she later contacted Chu Lingluo’s mother to scheme Mu Lin’s removal from her daughter’s side.

Since their goals aligned, Chu Lingluo’s mother didn’t interfere. Still, she resented her daughter being manipulated. Whatever she did worked—today’s scandal didn’t involve Mu Lin and a merchant’s daughter, but Mu Lin and Yan Yunyu instead.

“…”

Mu Lin hadn’t anticipated this scene either. He and Yan Yunyu stared at each other in awkward silence.

After a painfully long moment, Mu Lin cracked first—eager to end the mess and return to training.

“I got your offer, but I refuse. Here’s a better idea: join my team. We’ll challenge the tower as three.”

Yan Yunyu blinked, then sneered. “Joining Lingluo’s team? You want both of us at your beck and call?”

She smirked. “Besides, you haven’t told Lingluo about this, have you? What if she throws a fit?”

Mu Lin bristled. “I’m the Captain! The Proud Sky team obeys ME!”

“And stop mentioning Chu Lingluo! I’ve put up with her long enough!”

Yan Yunyu hid her face behind her fan, baffled. “You hate her? She treats you well. Your team seemed harmonious.”

“Lingluo’s fine…but she’s overbearing! What’s wrong with a man having multiple wives? Why can’t she be more accommodating?”

Yan Yunyu nearly dropped her fan. If not for the cover, her twisted expression would’ve betrayed everything. Even hidden, her eyes radiated scorn.

Mu Lin’s rant flowed too smoothly, too genuine—less like acting, more like true confessions.

He kept whining. “Harmonious? FAKE! I flatter her for resources. Truth is, I prefer YOU. If you joined us—”

“You’d dump her?”

“No. You’d be first wife. She’d be second.”

“Hah…”

Yan Yunyu’s mocking laugh shattered Chu Lingluo’s restraint. She stepped from hiding, face pale.

“Mu brother…you…”

She trembled, desperate to deny reality.

Mu Lin blanched, then jutted his chin defiantly. “Y-you followed me? This is YOUR fault! You’re too clingy! I train till my bones ache—why can’t I unwind with a few women?”

Chu Lingluo staggered back, tears spilling. “You…you never used to be like this…”

“Before, I never saw your true face. Teacher Dongfang Ya suggested Ji Xue join our team – this should’ve been perfect! She’d gain teammates while I secured first place and the chance to evolve my Spiritual Roots. Marrying Ji Xue would’ve accelerated my growth through her noble status. You destroyed everything!”

“You betrayed me first!”

Mu Lin’s ugly outburst made Chu Lingluo flee in tears. When she left, his agitated expression gradually smoothed into blankness.

The now cold-faced youth turned to Yan Yunyu. “My task’s done?”

His abrupt shift made her narrow her eyes briefly before nodding. “Should be.”

“Good. Hope we never meet again.”

Mu Lin returned to his quarters for relentless Hard Practice through the night.

At next day’s training hall, Chu Lingluo appeared transformed – her former gentleness replaced by Ji Xue-like iciness. Mu Lin stiffened momentarily before thinking:

_Don’t hate me. Your mother’s decision. The Chu family’s power crushes me. Clean breaks hurt less._

Avoiding her, he settled in a corner to meditate. Classmates buzzed:

“They actually split!”

“Rumor’s true? Mu Lin wanted a harem?”

“Idiot! Wealthy Chu Lingluo’s worth a hundred women!”

“His stupidity’s our chance…”

As suitors approached Chu Lingluo, Mu Lin felt nothing. He knew her Taoist Palace-residing mother dismissed even Hidden Dragon Rankings talents like him.

_Only if Ji Xue or Yan Yunyu were male could someone court Lingluo._

Before meditating, a frosty voice snapped:

“Scram!”

The reborn ice queen Chu Lingluo tolerated no pretenses. Attempted flatterers withered under her glacial stare and family power, retreating awkwardly.

When she marched toward him instead, Mu Lin wondered:

_Retrieving gifts? Seeking revenge?_

Feigning delight as she arrived, he ventured:

“Changed your mind? More companions mean more—”

“Silence!”

His vulgar suggestion flushed her face with rage and shame.
