Chapter 17: Officially Entering the Great Yin Living Scripture

After finishing his visualization, Mu Lin massaged his head and noticed Zong Xiu heading toward the door. He hurried after him.

“Brother Mu, is something wrong?” Zong Xiu paused briefly when he saw Mu Lin approaching.

Mu Lin nodded. “Brother Zong, do you know where to find a Black Water Mystic Serpent? My cultivation method is connected to it, and I need to observe one.”

Zong Xiu raised an eyebrow and chuckled.

“You don’t need the actual serpent for observation.”

“??? What does that mean?”

“Qi Practitioners can make image stones and image talismans. Using these tools, we recreate the serpent’s appearance. Watching through an image stone is far simpler than seeing it in person.”

He then added with a grin:

“Oh, and master-level Artifact Crafters can forge spirit maps. When viewing them, your soul enters the map, letting you temporarily possess the abilities of spirit beasts or demon beasts.”

Mu Lin’s eyes widened eagerly.

“Where are these spirit maps sold? The Taoist Palace shop?”

No wonder he was thrilled—direct experience could save endless effort. With his current soul strength, visualizing powerful beasts was impossible, but a spirit map might change that.

His hopes soon dimmed.

“The Taoist Palace shop has royal and powerful clan backing, but they hoard their best treasures.”

Before Mu Lin could sulk, Zong Xiu offered another clue.

“The Four Seas Pavilion trades everything. Rumor says their headquarters holds a Ten Thousand Spirits Map, containing not just beasts but even fallen deities.”

Zong Xiu stopped there.

Mu Lin finally grasped why crowds flocked to Yan Yunyu despite her second-rank Spiritual Roots Talent. Wealth mattered deeply for Qi Practitioners.

“Thanks for the advice, Brother Zong.”

Too tired to chat or seek Yan Yunyu, Mu Lin ate a bowl of Spirit Rice and napped in his accommodations for an hour.

Refreshed, he rose and opened his window to cultivate under moonlight.

This time, he practiced the Great Yin Living Scripture.

As a top-tier Earth-level method, its demands were steep. First, only lunar energy could be absorbed.

Second, its spiritual energy’s flow path was dizzyingly intricate.

The Black Water Mystic Serpent’s Transformation Technique merely formed a tail-biting serpent inside the body.

The Great Yin Living Scripture, however, shaped the energy into a faint humanoid figure.

Every major meridian in Mu Lin’s body traced this humanoid’s outline.

Thus, the difficulty of cultivating the Great Yin Living Scripture was six times greater than the Black Water Mystic Serpent’s Transformation Technique.

This complexity made it nearly impossible for ordinary people to succeed. Mu Lin’s first cultivation attempt ended in failure.

Fortunately, Mu Lin had changed.

His enhanced soul allowed precise control of spiritual energy, guiding it through his meridians.

He could multitask – observing the energy diagram in his mind (the jade slip had etched the Great Yin Living Scripture’s information into his soul, though mere memorization didn’t equal comprehension) while tripling his focus on directing the energy flow.

With mental references and his strengthened soul, Mu Lin finally made progress.

Soon he completed his first full cycle. Wispy strands of vitality of the living (in mist form) emerged within him.

The proficiency panel updated:

[Great Yin Living Scripture, Level 1 entry (1/360)]

"360 points just for entry? That’s triple the requirements of Mind Image · City of Heaven’s Funeral and the serpent technique!"

Mu Lin initially gaped at this.

Then he recalled – those other methods used external forces. The City of Heaven’s Funeral borrowed city power, while the serpent technique drew on mystic bloodline strength.

The pure self-reliance of Great Yin Living Scripture justified its difficulty.

"Urk?!"

Distraction warped his energy flow, ruining the session.

Mu Lin immediately refocused.

Two incense sticks later, he’d completed six cycles – gaining six proficiency points.

"Six points per session? That’s sixty days to reach 360!"

Two months for entry-to-proficiency wasn’t slow. Core cultivation methods were inherently tougher, especially this top-tier Earth-level scripture needing no external aids.

Ordinary folk needed one to three years. By comparison, Mu Lin was gifted.

But aristocratic children or geniuses achieved this in a month. Not wanting to lag, Mu Lin pondered alternatives.

After consideration, he found solutions beyond his means.

"Earth Essence Yuan Liquid could strengthen my meridians… but it costs hundreds of Spirit Stones!"

Sighing, he channeled frustration into folding a paper palace – hoping to trade it with Yan Yunyu.

"I won’t grovel, but selling art is acceptable."

His master-level skills produced a Jiangnan-style palace with gardens, rockeries, and maidens – lifelike yet…

"…Same tier as my previous paper ship. Without novelty, she’ll approve but won’t tip extra."

Abandoning paper, he grabbed brushes. Calligraphy and paintings could elevate his craft.

This wasn’t purely mercenary. Studying the Paper Folding Secret Manual revealed deeper truths – white paper foundations required vital breath activation.

But past masters sought enhancements:

– Better spiritual materials

– Sealing demon souls

– Vital blood nourishment

– Talismans and formations

Mu Lin’s brushwork laid groundwork for future inscription techniques.
