Chapter 70: The Trick Battle
Black Bear struck first. He stepped back slightly while commanding the mechanical steel bear to charge forward.
Cultivators don’t fight like mortals trading knife and spear blows. Their battles involve divine skills, Dao magic, and treasures clashing from a distance!
Though the mechanical steel bear was a close-combat puppet, it didn’t approach directly. Instead, it raised its massive paw and swung through the air.
Dark Spiritual Light suddenly erupted from the puppet’s body as it activated a special Dao magic.
A bear paw over thirty meters wide materialized above Huang Mao’s head, crashing down like a collapsing mountain.
Faced with this Thunderbolt strike, even Fang Lie admitted he’d only dodge rather than block it head-on.
Yet Huang Mao simply snorted. Tilting his Shield at an angle, he deflected the attack sideways.
The redirected paw struck the ground with earth-shaking force, kicking up a dust cloud that swallowed Huang Mao whole.
Anticipating this, Black Bear silently circled to Huang Mao’s flank. Without warning, he unleashed a yellow Hammer treasure infused with earth-element Magic.
The attack blended perfectly with the yellow sandstorm. Most would’ve died instantly, but Huang Mao’s Wutu Divine Art granted extreme earth Magic sensitivity. Swiping his Shield sideways, he deflected the Hammer into the mechanical steel bear itself.
Though Black Bear recalled most Magic at the last moment, the steel bear still staggered back, its iron armor dented.
"Call this arena defense?" Huang Mao taunted. "Keep dreaming!"
Enraged at being outmatched despite superior cultivation, Black Bear attacked furiously with his puppet. Huang Mao countered with ancestral Shield Expert techniques, holding his ground against both opponents.
Meanwhile, the betting stall boomed as spectators wagered on the seemingly even match.
Fang Huo watched mountains of spirit stones pile up – nearly a million. "Big Brother," he whispered to Fang Lie, "Huang Mao’s scoundrels will pocket tens of thousands!"
"Someone’s going to cry later," Ice Second Brother chuckled.
Longxing Tianxia asked, "Should we intervene?"
Fang Lie shrugged. "Fools and their spirit stones… But mark my words – they’ll make Black Bear win. He’s Arena Master material; Huang Mao isn’t."
"Let’s bankrupt them!" Fang Huo urged. "Twenty thousand bet?"
"Twenty thousand?!" Ice Second Brother gasped. "What if we’re wrong?"
"No mistake," Fang Lie insisted. "The house can’t afford a three-million-spirit-stone tie payout. They’ll force Huang Mao’s loss."
Fang Huo returned grinning later: "I bet thirty-two thousand! The bookie turned green when I chose Black Bear!"
"Hmph, clearly there’s a trick!" Ice Second Brother sneered. "We should bet more since we’ve got spirit stones now!"
He moved to act but Fang Lie yanked him back. "Don’t. This bet’s perfect. More would cut their profits or even make them lose. To avoid that, they’d change the script and let Huang Mao win. Then we’d lose!"
"Right!" Ice Second Brother grinned. "Big Brother always plans carefully."
"Now we just wait for Huang Mao to get knocked down!" Fang Huo said cheerfully.
"But they seem evenly matched," Longxing Tianxia muttered, brow furrowed.
"Wait," Fang Lie said coldly. "If I were them, I’d arrange victory at the last moment to fool more idiots."
The group chuckled and turned their attention to the arena.
Minutes ticked by. With less than fifteen minutes remaining in the two-hour limit, both fighters risked disqualification if unresolved. The battle remained fierce, both combatants weary but determined.
Suddenly, as time nearly expired, the mechanical steel bear leaped skyward—over thirty meters high—before crashing down ten meters before Huang Mao.
Since it wasn’t a direct attack, Huang Mao held his ground, watching warily.
Upon impact, pale Divine Light erupted from the bear’s limbs. Like autumn wind scattering leaves, it purged all earth element spiritual energy within range—a divine skill specifically countering earth energy.
Huang Mao staggered, caught unprepared. His family’s Wutu Divine Art relied on earth energy connection. With feet grounded, he drew endless earth power, rooting himself mountain-steady against any force. This was the Huang Family’s iron wall secret, why he’d stood unyielding against both bears’ assaults.
Now severed from earth energy, he lost his anchor. The landing shockwave hurled him airborne.
Black Bear seized the opening. With a vicious grin, he swung his hammer.
Midair and defenseless, Huang Mao blocked with his shield. But without earth connection, the blow launched him like a leaf—clear over the arena’s edge.
Landing outside meant automatic defeat.
Tie-bettors erupted in rage, cursing Black Bear’s cunning and Huang Mao’s stupidity.
Glaring at the victorious Black Bear, Huang Mao stormed off. Most thought him shamed, but Fang Lie’s group knew better—the man was off to celebrate swindling hundreds of thousands of spirit stones.
Fang Huo gleefully collected their winnings—over 300,000 spirit stones at 1:1 odds. His grin stretched ear to ear.
Ice Second Brother nudged Fang Lie. "Big Brother, shouldn’t someone teach that Black Bear a lesson?"
"Might as well fight him as anyone," Fang Lie shrugged, stepping forward.
A crimson blur beat him to it—a beautiful woman materialized before Black Bear.
