Chapter 147: Mutual Scheming
Fang Lie flew over ten thousand miles as if sightseeing, taking several days.
He could have moved faster but chose to delay, wanting fewer survivors to escape his net.
When eight hundred miles from the gathering point, Fang Lie quietly halted and activated his Earth Eye Divine Skill.
Ordinary Cultivators could only see a hundred miles through blurred vision without special skills. At this distance, Fang Lie observed undetected.
The meeting valley held dense woods and a small stone pond. Through his divine sight, Fang Lie spotted seven figures: two monks, three Taoists, Xiao Xuanzi, and Bai First Young Master.
One Taoist hovered as lookout – a precaution after Fang Lie’s previous ambush. The rest sat gloomily by the water.
Originally twenty-nine participants remained after Fang Lie’s exclusion from the Three Great Sects’ thirty. Now less than ten days later, over half lay dead by Fang Lie’s hand.
The survivors sat defeated, longing to end this humiliating Path Contest. They’d gone days without proper sleep, constantly fearing pursuit. Only lingering hope of victory kept them gathered.
"Only these few remain," a monk lamented. "The others must have fallen to Fang Lie."
Xiao Xuanzi clenched his fists. "I had him within reach but let him slip!"
"Enough regrets," Bai First Young Master said flatly. "Our only chance is combining all resources."
"I retain three sword talismans from my Master," Xiao Xuanzi declared. "Each equals a top-grade fourth-rank Flying Sword’s strike."
"Three Black Ice Thunder Pearls remain with me," Bai First Young Master added. "Each matches a top-grade fourth-tier cold treasure’s power."
This followed sect tradition – elite disciples like them received six disposable treasures when traveling: three defensive, three offensive. Fang Lie’s Roaring Sky Cannon had already exhausted their defensive items.
Had Puhua, Xiao Xuanzi and Bai First Young Master combined their nine treasures earlier, Fang Lie would have fallen. But sect rivalry prevented cooperation – none would weaken themselves for others’ benefit.
Now desperation forced alliance. "Six disposable treasures mean six top-grade fourth-tier strikes," Xiao Xuanzi calculated. "But Fang Lie wields Puhua’s Demon-Subduing Golden Bowl. Breaking its defense requires four simultaneous attacks. The remaining two should finish him."
"Better unleash all six at once," Bai First Young Master countered. "Leave no chance for recovery."
Defensive treasures generally outmatched offensive counterparts. Equal-tier defenses typically required multiple assaults to breach – unless overwhelmed by concentrated force.
This time, Fang Lie’s Magic was indeed weaker than the two opponents. However, their attacks weren’t powerful either since they used disposable treasures – these items’ power depended solely on the sealer’s ability, not the user’s Magic.
When sealing disposable treasures, some power inevitably got lost, making their attacks imperfect by nature.
The two scoundrels’ calculation that four attacks could break Fang Lie’s Demon-Subduing Golden Bowl turned out completely accurate.
From hundreds of miles away, Fang Lie watched their conversation through his Earth Eye Divine Skill. Reading their lips revealed most of their scheme.
He muttered to himself, "These two are actually teaming up to kill me. If they each possess three disposable treasures like Puhua did, combining forces might really finish me instantly."
Frowning deeply, Fang Lie pondered how to eliminate them without getting killed himself.
But the task seemed impossible. The enemies clearly held six disposable treasures with targeting functions – nearly impossible to dodge, requiring direct confrontation. Any frontal assault would mean certain death.
After prolonged contemplation yielded no solution, Fang Lie reluctantly sought Old Bird’s advice through mental communication.
"Old Bird, you know the situation. Six disposable treasures equivalent to top-grade fourth-rank treasure strikes – I can’t survive that! Any ideas?"
"I’ve got a solution, but you might not dare try it!" Old Bird chuckled slyly.
"Really?" Fang Lie suddenly felt suspicious of the laughter’s cunning tone.
"Believe what you will!" Old Bird replied smugly.
"Fine, I believe you!" Fang Lie pressed urgently. "What’s the plan?"
"Charge straight at them dramatically. Leave the rest to me!" Old Bird declared confidently.
"You?" Fang Lie blinked. "Aren’t you forbidden from intervening?"
"Never mind that!" Old Bird snickered. "Focus on your goal – I’ll handle the rest. Trust me or not?"
Cornered, Fang Lie vowed, "Alright! My life’s in your hands now!"
Without hesitation, Fang Lie beat his golden wings and charged. Using Earth Eye Divine Skill, he spotted a sentry turning away. Emerging silently from shadows, he struck when the guard faced opposite direction.
The lookout only managed to scream "FANG LIE’S HERE!" before being shattered by the Seven Treasures Vajra Mace’s brutal strike.
The commotion alerted those below. Bai First Young Master initially startled, then roared furiously: "That pest returns! Unleash everything! Kill him now!"
Three white thunder pearls materialized in his palm, icy energy radiating. He immediately launched a three-foot-thick silver Thunderbolt at Fang Lie.
Simultaneously, Xiao Xuanzi shouted "Attack together!" summoning three Sword Ray Shadows that transformed into thunderous Sword Energy blasts.
Though prepared, Fang Lie panicked. Silently stowing his vajra mace, he maximized the Demon-Subduing Golden Bowl’s power. Golden Buddhist light enveloped him just as attacks landed.
The newly formed light shattered instantly. While most Sword Energy and Thunderbolt dissipated, residual forces blasted Fang Lie skyward.
The duo below laughed triumphantly, simultaneously pointing at each other: "HA! Fang Lie’s dead! And YOU’RE next!"
Their matching words stunned them both. Each produced hidden weapons – another thunder pearl and sword talisman.
"So you kept a fourth backup!" they chorused like rehearsed performers.
Then realization struck: "Wait, I only had three! Did YOU hold back too?"
Looking up dumbfounded, they saw Fang Lie descending… completely unharmed.
