Chapter 139: Confronting Puhua
The battlefield situation had completely reversed. Without the most aggressive sword cultivator Xiao Xuanzi, Fang Lie felt much more at ease, no longer fearing instant death.
Meanwhile, Bai First Young Master faced doubled pressure. The Golden Eagle, Clear Wind Bright Moon Sword, and Blood God Puppet attacked simultaneously, overwhelming him completely. He even had to recall two of his twelve cold dragons for self-defense.
The remaining ten cold dragons couldn’t touch Fang Lie. While enduring continuous Soulfire Lance attacks that eroded his Flying Sword’s Soul Imprint, Bai First Young Master realized failure was inevitable—only a matter of time.
This scoundrel proved decisive. Admitting defeat, he immediately withdrew his treasure and fled.
"Puhua, blame Xiao Xuanzi for this! I had no choice!" Bai First Young Master shouted before vanishing as a streak of light.
Though Fang Lie could’ve easily caught up, he chose to stay—he still faced a group of monks. Reluctantly, he let them escape temporarily.
Puhua recognized their defeat. Withdrawing his divine skill, he rose slowly with a bitter expression. "Amitābha. This monk erred."
"Correcting mistakes is the greatest virtue," Fang Lie stated solemnly.
"Hm?" Puhua brightened. "You forgive me? Excellent! I’ll inform my Senior Uncle of your mercy!"
"Unnecessary. I’ll deliver your obituaries personally," Fang Lie coldly countered.
"Why this stubbornness?" Puhua grimaced.
"I speak plainly," Fang Lie sneered. "You conspired to kill me. Why spare you? Doesn’t Buddhism teach cause and effect? Reap what you sow."
"Amitābha." Puhua pressed his palms together. "We erred. But resolving grudges creates better karma. Spare us, and Great Thunder Sound Temple becomes your ally. Better than making powerful enemies, no?"
Internally, Puhua fumed: ‘I’ve humbled myself! Why won’t he relent? Great Thunder Sound Temple would reward him!’
Fang Lie narrowed his eyes. "During my trial in the Cycle of Fire, I vowed to enforce Heaven’s justice. Your vile actions demand punishment—only then manifests Heavenly Dao’s will!"
"False mercy!" Puhua retorted. "True compassion spares enemies! That’s righteousness!"
"Wrong." Fang Lie’s voice chilled. "Heaven’s justice requires evil’s punishment. Your ‘forgiveness’ is hypocrisy—sparing you for temple favors isn’t virtue."
"But kindness can’t be wrong!"
"It is when evil persists." Fang Lie leaned forward. "Release you, and you’ll harm others again. Their blood would stain my hands."
"We’re no Demonic Path!" Puhua shouted. "Great Thunder Sound Temple is righteous!"
"Am I guilty then?" Fang Lie demanded. "Did I murder your father? Commit atrocities?"
Puhua faltered.
"You attacked me for profit," Fang Lie pressed. "You’d repeat this. Only death ensures justice."
Murderous intent flashed in Puhua’s eyes. "So you’ll show no mercy?"
"Would you spare me?" Fang Lie shot back.
"Fine!" Puhua spat three times. "Typical Fang Family stubbornness! Then witness Great Thunder Sound Temple’s might!"
"Buddha’s mercy!" Golden Buddhist light erupted from Puhua, transforming him into a gilded statue.
Fang Lie observed grimly: ‘Major sect elites live up to their fame. His Buddhist light defense could withstand Fourth-tier Magical Items.’
At this moment, Puhua commanded, "Take the unconscious Junior Brothers and flee!"
The remaining monks froze in shock. One stammered, "Senior Brother Puhua, what about you?"
"I’ll hold them back!" Puhua declared grimly. "Without me blocking him, none can escape! You’ve witnessed Fang Lie’s speed yourselves!"
His voice dripped with bitterness and despair.
Buddhist disciples always struggled this way – while tough and resilient, their slow escape speed meant defeat often spelled doom. Today proved no different. Though Xiao Xuanzi and Bai First Young Master might not surpass Puhua in strength, their superior speed let them flee, abandoning him to fate.
Now Puhua had to protect his juniors’ retreat, knowing he’d likely become Fang Lie’s first victim.
The Great Thunder Sound Temple monks stood moved to tears. "Senior Brother," they choked, "we’ll fight with you!"
Puhua sighed heavily. "If victory were possible, would I choose death? Didn’t you see? Even the three of us—me, Xiao Xuanzi, and Bai First Young Master—were no match for Fang Lie together! Your presence changes nothing now. Flee before my sacrifice becomes meaningless!"
"We won’t abandon you!" they insisted stubbornly.
"At least let someone inform our Sect!" Puhua pleaded. "Should we all perish unknown, our deaths mean nothing! Besides, you’re only hindering me. Leave, and perhaps I’ll find escape!"
The monks exchanged glances before relenting. "We’ll obey. But if you fall here, we swear eternal vengeance against Fang Lie!"
They gathered their unconscious comrades and fled.
Fang Lie observed coldly throughout, making no move to intercept.
Only when they vanished did Puhua relax slightly. "Why let them go?"
"You’re stronger," Fang Lie admitted bluntly. "I needed them gone to focus on you."
"Honest to the end!" Puhua barked. "Then why fight? I swear to leave the Arhat Immortal Fruit be!"
"Enough!" Fang Lie’s voice turned glacial. "A true man acts without regret. I’ve resolved to kill you—come what may!"
With a sweep of his arms, treasures materialized around him. "Prepare to die, Puhua!"
"Amitābha!" Puhua thundered, summoning his vajra mace, bronze bowl, and prayer beads. The Buddhist Treasures glowed fiercely around him.
"Begin!" Fang Lie commanded. The Golden Eagle and Clear Wind Bright Moon Sword surged forward.
Thunderous light engulfed Puhua as azure Sword Rays flashed within.
Calmly raising his bowl, Puhua encased himself in Buddhist light. His vajra mace morphed into a thunderous giant pillar crashing toward Fang Lie.
Both Fourth-tier Magical Items effortlessly blocked Fang Lie’s assault, forcing him to dodge.
"Two Fourth-tier treasures?" Fang Lie gaped. "Great Thunder Sound Temple spares no expense!"
"Flattery won’t help," Puhua grimaced. "What use are treasures against your accursed puppet?"
"Finally understood?" Fang Lie smirked, directing his Blood God Puppet. Soulfire Lances streaked toward the vajra mace.
"Damnation!" Puhua swore, desperately maneuvering his weapon. "What sorcery is this? This isn’t a fair fight!"
