Chapter 138: Traitor Teammates
Fang Lie’s clash with the three elites shook heaven and earth. Twelve silver frost dragons roared ceaselessly in midair, encircling and harrying him. A massive sword spanning hundreds of feet dominated the center, its Sword Energy crisscrossing the sky as it slashed relentlessly at Fang Lie.
A young monk bathed in Buddhist light stood with palms pressed together, eyes closed in devout sutra chanting. Even the raging Sword Energy and howling frost dragons couldn’t drown out his murmuring prayers. The battlefield became strange harmony of lethal Sword Rays and merciful chants, all framing this deadly siege.
Though slightly disadvantaged, Fang Lie’s golden wings glowed behind him. Their silent fluttering seemed to ripple the void itself, propelling him like living lightning through the air. The frost dragons couldn’t match his speed, leaving only the colossal sword as true threat – yet single blade couldn’t finish him quickly despite frequent close calls.
Most of Fang Lie’s treasures merely forced his opponents to deploy defensive items, creating minor distractions. The exception was Blood God Puppet.
When this third-tier treasure emerged with terrifying aura, Xiao Xuanzi and Puhua initially panicked before relaxing upon sensing its lower rank. After Soulfire Lance attacks proved useless against the huge sword, they dismissed it as ordinary third-tier puppet harmless to Fourth-tier Magical Items.
Only Bai First Young Master trembled at its appearance. One of his Flying Swords still bore heavy injuries from their last encounter – days of refining had only restored seventy percent functionality. Relieved it targeted Xiao Xuanzi, he faced dilemma: warn his rival and risk cowardly retreat, or stay silent and watch him fall?
The logical choice was protecting Xiao Xuanzi’s Flying Swords with his own. Those blades had nearly slain Fang Lie multiple times, once forcing him to block with Five Elements and Eight Trigrams Dao Robe’s Shield formation. Though surviving, the Dao Robe’s power dropped to sixty percent. A few more strikes might end this.
But Bai First Young Master’s self-interest prevailed. Their mutual dislike ruled out sacrifice, especially since killing Fang Lie would leave his own swords weakened against Xiao Xuanzi’s intact arsenal. East Kunlun’s tarnished reputation – particularly their Deceive ment of Fang Lie’s father a decade prior – haunted his thoughts.
‘That man’s fate warns me,’ Bai First Young Master mused. ‘Save this scoundrel only to be backstabbed? I’d become heaven’s greatest joke!’ He chose silence, letting oblivious Xiao Xuanzi walk into disaster.
Ordinary Qi Sea cultivators daredn’t intervene in this clash of third-tier treasures and higher. They became mere spectators, shouting encouragement:
"Finish him, senior brothers!"
"Almost cleaved him in half! Next strike’ll do it!"
"His Dao Robe’s breaking! Two more hits and that bastard’s dead!"
Cornered again, Fang Lie tanked frost dragon’s attack with crumbling Dao Robe to escape encirclement. With final crack, his protective garment shattered completely. Now defenseless, with Soul-Settling Bell occupied suppressing Puhua’s chants, the battle entered critical phase.
Seeing this, everyone became greatly encouraged and shouted, "Senior brother is mighty! One more strike to slay Fang Lie!"
Even Bai First Young Master’s face brightened as he exclaimed, "Xiao Xuanzi! Fang Lie’s Protectiveness is gone! Just one more hit to finish him!"
Meanwhile, he secretly gloated, "That earlier decision was brilliant. Once Xiao Xuanzi kills Fang Lie, I’ll strike when his treasures malfunction. Then Puhua and I will split the Arhat Immortal Fruit. Victory will be mine! The Mo Sect’s honor rests with me!"
But as Bai First Young Master reveled in his excitement, Xiao Xuanzi suddenly sensed trouble.
The fierce battle had consumed his focus, leaving him unaware of mounting dangers. Yet as the fight dragged on, he started feeling something was wrong – his life-bound flying sword felt increasingly foreign and difficult to control.
During his latest strike, he realized something was off. By his calculations, that attack should have killed Fang Lie. Why had it been slightly too slow?
With each subsequent attempt, his flying sword grew heavier and more unwieldy.
Growing suspicious, Xiao Xuanzi eased his assault and scanned his weapon with divine sense.
The discovery nearly shattered his soul.
One-third of the soul restrictions in his life-bound treasure had mysteriously vanished!
No wonder controlling it felt like wielding a sword with three fewer fingers – both power and precision had drastically weakened.
Horrified, Xiao Xuanzi cried out, "Damnation! My flying sword’s damaged! A third of my Soul Imprint is gone! What happened?!"
Puhua kept chanting scriptures, appearing deaf to the outcry. In truth, he heard but dared not respond – interrupting his sincere prayers to Buddha risked divine wrath or cultivation deviation.
Bai First Young Master panicked at the early discovery. Fearing Xiao Xuanzi might flee, he urgently shouted, "Forget that now! Slaying Fang Lie comes first!"
Xiao Xuanzi hesitated, then nodded. Stopping now wouldn’t fix anything. Better kill Fang Lie first, then investigate.
As he steeled himself to continue, Fang Lie’s mocking voice rang out: "Bai First Young Master, why didn’t you tell Xiao Xuanzi about your past defeat? Ah, I see – you wanted his treasure broken to eliminate a rival!"
Xiao Xuanzi froze mid-strike. "Fang Lie! Explain yourself!"
"Don’t listen to his lies!" Bai First Young Master desperately roared. "Kill him now!"
Fang Lie laughed. "My Blood God Puppet holds an Ancient Heroic Soul. Its Soulfire Lances destroy Soul Imprints in treasures. Bai First Young Master knew this from last time… yet said nothing!"
"You scheming dog!" Xiao Xuanzi whirled on Bai First Young Master. "You knew about this cursed puppet! Why hide it?!"
"I… simply forgot," Bai First Young Master stammered.
"Liar!" Xiao Xuanzi bellowed. "My sword endured multiple attacks! You wanted my treasure ruined to finish me off!"
"Truly, I forgot!"
"Forgot this!" Xiao Xuanzi spat. "You’ll pay for this, Bai!"
Sweeping up unconscious East Kunlun disciples with his sleeve, he shouted "Retreat!" and fled. The remaining conscious East Kunlun Taoists followed in flashing sword beams.
Having seen Bai First Young Master’s treachery, Xiao Xuanzi quit the fight. He’d rather let Fang Lie win than aid his deceitful "ally".
With Xiao Xuanzi gone, Fang Lie focused on Bai First Young Master. The Blood God Puppet roared, launching Soulfire Lances at a cold dragon.
"Curse you!" Bai First Young Master raged. Victory had been within grasp! But the East Kunlun desertion left him alone against Fang Lie.
He cursed the fleeing swordsmen, conveniently forgetting his own betrayal caused this disaster.
