Chapter 117: Cannon Roars to the Sky
It must be said, the Boy in Gold’s subordinates worked swiftly.
Within just one hour, a tall young Cultivator hurried over and handed the Boy in Gold a Mechanical Cannon treasure.
This was an ancient bronze cannon measuring one zhang in length and roughly a foot in thickness. Its surface crawled with divine scripts, emitting a sharp metallic aura reminiscent of a peerless Divine Sword.
Naturally, this wasn’t a Flying Sword. Its metallic nature stemmed from being a metal element treasure, unleashing metal element Dao magic.
The Boy in Gold reluctantly accepted it, caressing it once before shoving it toward the room housing Fang Lie and his companions.
Guided by his Magic, the bronze cannon floated smoothly into the room, halting before Fang Lie.
"A third-rank top-grade Mechanical Cannon—Ten Thousand Swords of Metal. Tremendous power. My family’s inherited treasure!" the Boy in Gold barked. "Consider our debt settled!"
He turned to leave immediately.
But before completing his turn, the cannon came flying out of the room, clattering to the ground and rolling to his feet.
The Boy in Gold’s face darkened. "Fang Lie! Explain this insult!"
"Simple," Fang Lie stated lightly. "This cannon’s useless. Bring another."
"Useless? This is a third-rank top-grade Mechanical Cannon!" the Boy in Gold roared.
"It’s worthless because I say so," Fang Lie retorted coldly. "Two hours remain. Fail again, and you’ll face the Ancestral Hall."
"You—" The Boy in Gold spluttered. "This is sheer humiliation!"
"Drop the act," Fang Lie sneered. "I’ve made my requirements clear."
"How should I know what cannon you desire?" the Boy in Gold protested.
"Don’t feign ignorance. An Inner Elite Disciple like you knows exactly what I need," Fang Lie countered. "Unless you’re truly brainless?"
The Boy in Gold choked on his words. He’d indeed been bluffing.
Any fool knew Fang Lie’s fire element affinity. His Flame Dragon Blaze Technique amplified fire-based cannons exponentially. By offering a metal element cannon, the Boy in Gold had hoped to weaken Fang Lie’s advantage.
Cornered yet unable to admit his scheme, the Boy in Gold feigned confusion. "At least give me a clue!"
"Maximum destructive power," Fang Lie replied flatly. "Final opportunity. Waste it, and we duel before our ancestors."
Snarling, the Boy in Gold muttered instructions to his attendant, who departed with troubled eyes.
Ninety minutes later, the servant returned breathless, presenting a compact black cannon.
Three feet long and duck-egg thick, the unadorned object resembled a polished log more than a treasure. No divine scripts glowed on its surface, no Spiritual Light shimmered.
Yet the Boy in Gold cradled it like a lover, stroking it for fifteen full minutes before rasping, "This treasure’s survived generations in my family. Reject it, and I’ve nothing left."
He guided the cannon through the window. It halted before Fang Lie, who’d noted the Boy in Gold’s pained expression. Sensing value, Fang Lie carefully channeled Magic into the odd device for inspection.
Fang Lie noticed the Mechanical Cannon’s structure looked bizarre, completely different from any he’d encountered before. Strangely, it lacked any visible mechanism to activate Dao magic.
This discovery startled him. Logically, Boy in Gold shouldn’t dare deceive him now, especially when appearing so sincere. Yet why couldn’t Fang Lie find the Dao magic activation component?
He nearly questioned the golden-clad youth, but noticed the smug expression suggesting mockery awaited any inquiry. Fang Lie swallowed his words. Better consult old bird – that knowledgeable ally wouldn’t deceive him.
Mentally, Fang Lie inquired: "Old bird, what’s this contraption?"
The voice responded instantly: "An antique! This Roaring Sky Cannon’s nearly as ancient as your Pill Furnace. Some call it Heartbreaker Cannon for good reason."
"Actual Mechanical Cannon?" Fang Lie frowned. "Where’s the Dao magic mechanism?"
"Non-existent!" Old bird cackled. "It fires specialized treasure cannonballs – each shot consumes entire treasures. The exorbitant cost earned its nickname."
"What? Burning treasures per shot? That’s absurd luxury!"
"Ancient times overflowed with heaven-earth treasures. Even Seventh-rank treasure cannonballs existed then, rivaling Ninth-Rank Treasure strikes! Thunder Tribulation Immortals fled from such power." Old bird sighed. "As resources dwindled, these became obsolete. Reusable Dao magic cannons replaced them."
"Understood. But if each shot equals treasure destruction, the power…"
"Two-rank amplification!" Old bird cut in. "First-rank shells hit like third-tier magical items. Second-tier equals Fourth-tier Magical Items. Stockpile enough high-tier shells, even Immortals would fear you!"
Fang Lie scratched his head. "Powerful, but bankruptingly expensive."
"You’re a Great Pill Master – afford this!" Old bird countered. "Only method for Fourth-Rank Dao magic at your level."
"But I lack treasure cannonball refining methods."
"I possess them. Time you learned refining techniques."
"Good." Fang Lie smirked. "But let’s squeeze that golden fool first."
Turning to Boy in Gold, he demanded: "This cannon’s useless without shells! Give me hundred at least!"
"Impossible!" The youth paled. "First-rank treasures cost tens of thousands spirit stones each! Hundred equals million-spirit stone value!"
"Ten then!"
"Ten first-rank? Fine! Now five Second-tier!"
"Preposterous!"
"Ancestral Hall arbitration?" Fang Lie played his trump card.
"Three! No more!" Boy in Gold roared, tossing thirteen jade orbs before fleeing with armored man.
Examining the pigeon-egg-sized shells, Fang Lie noted varying Spiritual Energy levels distinguishing ranks. "These Five Elements cannonballs seem underwhelming."
"Basic models using premium spirit stones." Old bird explained. "I’ll teach advanced refining methods later."
"Excellent! This’ll transform my Secret Realm expedition!"
"Don’t grow complacent." Old bird warned. "You’ve closed gap with Inner Elite Disciples, but other major sects hide formidable talents. One misstep…"
"I know." Fang Lie’s eyes hardened. "This mission concerns Father’s first debt recovery. Failure isn’t an option."
