Chapter 91: Epilogue
Mu Ling found herself in the familiar café once again.
The strong aroma of coffee, the soft murmurs in the hall, and the sudden transition left her unable to recover for a while.
She saw the café owner again, whom she found somewhat familiar, and he offered her a slight smile.
Mu Ling immediately glanced at the clock on the wall, and indeed, time had barely passed… Otherwise, the people here would have noticed their absence.
The experiences of these past few days seemed like an entirely different lifetime.
Although they had endured a brutal and bloody war on the first day, they spent the remaining time relatively relaxed in the palace.
They not only enjoyed the attentive service of the maids but also savored many delicacies.
“In a way, it could be considered a pleasant journey,” Mu Ling murmured to herself, contemplating other matters.
Thank you for your guidance, Savior—my heart seems to have undergone a transformation.
After experiencing a painful and frightening interdimensional war, “Mr. Mystery,” who always lurked in the darkness, no longer seemed so significant in her heart.
Before the mysterious and magnificent Babel Tower, both “Mr. Mystery” and the Black Star Faction behind him were nothing but minor obstacles on the path.
Indeed, they were mere trifles.
“Perhaps the world that Babel Tower seeks to save encompasses more than one?” The thought suddenly struck her.
“I understand now.”
It was her own narrow-mindedness that had prevented them from seeing the infinite and diverse universe that the Savior observed, and even the battle at Babel Tower could persist for millennia.
Mu Ling, lost in thought after this sudden “understanding,” couldn’t regain her composure for quite some time.
“Saving…”
Perhaps this would be the meaning of her future life.
——
Maryse, wearing pink pajamas, sat up slowly from her bed.
The independent apartment was dark, with a dimly lit interior and snacks, toys, and clothes scattered around the bed.
The girl with elven ears sat silently in the darkness.
The entire room maintained its stillness.
Since escaping from her family, Maryse had been hiding in this safe house without any communication with others.
She remembered the maid’s face but knew clearly that she couldn’t risk seeing her for now.
Maryse slowly rose from the bed and walked barefoot toward the French windows.
She wanted to reach out but hesitated slightly before finally extending her hand.
Her fair hand pulled open the curtain.
A warm ray of sunshine streamed in from outside, incredibly dazzling. Maryse turned her head slightly and closed her eyes.
Gradually, she opened her beautiful eyes and drew a deep breath.
Freedom at last.
From now on, she was no longer a mere pawn of the family, though perhaps someday, she would return… in a different capacity!
Outside the window, traffic bustled with mortals living their mundane lives. This window was just one of countless others, as insignificant as a single droplet in the ocean.
Maryse gazed up at the golden sun in the sky, mesmerized.
“The future… I have finally arrived.”
Yet where would her tomorrow lead?
——
In the Demon Hunt Agency, within an office.
Alan smiled calmly, as usual, discussing “girlfriends” with his colleagues.
“My girlfriends are all too adorable. If any one of them goes missing, I cannot eat or sleep properly.”
“Look at these. These two gifts were from my younger girlfriends. Mmm, they smell wonderful. Would you like to try them? Don’t fight over them! I’m merely being polite!”
After his string of nonsense, Alan left the office for the bathroom, washed his face, took a deep breath, and composed himself.
He had already accepted his temporary identity as a “Babel Tower member.”
Babel Tower.
Its mastermind, known as “Savior,” was undoubtedly a divine existence, yet perhaps not a villain.
It would be utterly absurd to attempt to fight such an existence with mere delusions. From now on, the task at hand was to utilize Babel Tower’s power to establish order in Tatsumi City.
“Lin Bian, this is the path I have chosen.”
Alan was no longer lost at this point.
He left the restroom with a smile, but instead of heading where he should, he walked toward the 12th team’s office.
For some reason, Alan simply wanted to see that person now.
——
Bai Yan sat in his office, studying his reflection in the desk mirror, struck by an absurd notion.
The man in the mirror seemed unlike himself.
He glanced up at the others in the office: the captain examining reports, Holly watching Babel Tower’s videos, and Black Vulture still sleeping.
For some reason, a faint sense of estrangement lingered deep within Bai Yan’s heart.
It wasn’t overwhelming, yet it persisted.
His slender fingers twisted a black steel pen.
Whether as “Savior” or “Bai Yan,” neither identity seemed entirely his own, or perhaps only their union could be considered his true nature?
Thirteen years ago, it appeared his memories had been altered.
During this time, he had been using his ability to “connect” to trace various fragments, discovering that some Night Watchers from the Demon Hunt Agency had encountered him thirteen years prior.
What exactly had transpired then?
Now, Bai Yan only remembered rescuing Alan from bullying, but he had a vague feeling that more must have occurred.
Moreover, the dramatic change in his personality over the past decade… was it truly natural?
The mysteries surrounding him were numerous.
Bai Yan retrieved his phone again.
This wasn’t his original phone, which currently lay on his desk.
“This is an experiment.”
After a deep breath, Bai Yan opened his new phone. His pupils contracted slightly, and he fell into prolonged silence.
As expected, the new phone’s interface still displayed the “Babel Tower” game screen!
“This was clearly a newly purchased device.”
What was the purpose of “Babel Tower,” and why did he possess it? The answers might prove crucial, or they might be entirely meaningless.
However, he never believed in a free “lunch,” as larger conspiracies might lurk behind the unexpected system.
“Caution is essential.”
In this game called “reality,” he played the role of a “Savior.”
Treating them as his pawns, playing with them joyfully—wasn’t that so?
The void within was filled.
This sensation proved irresistible to Bai Yan.
He silently observed the unchanged tag on his social media account from years past.
“When you realize everything is unimportant, the entire universe becomes yours, but I’ve never seen any universe that favors such a person.”
“The universe is a wild beast that feeds on mediocre people, creating countless fools just to devour them. The wise have a chance to climb to the summit, riding reality’s back, but reality will constantly try to unseat them.”
“In the end, it will succeed.”
Suddenly, Bai Yan heard a familiar voice.
“Bai Yan.”
He lifted his head to see Alan standing at the door, then calmly turned off his phone.
Though Bai Yan had vaguely realized that even if others saw his phone, they couldn’t perceive “Babel Tower’s” existence.
Several minutes later.
The two stood on the Demon Hunt Agency’s rooftop.
A gentle breeze passed as Alan took out a mint-flavored cigarette, smoking it awkwardly.
“Since when did you start smoking?”
Bai Yan frowned slightly. This didn’t align with Alan’s character.
“Just a sudden urge. Perhaps one day you’ll try it too,” Alan replied calmly, as if discussing something trivial.
“Anyway, this is my choice, and I’ll accept the ultimate ‘consequences’… Though as a super being, even excessive smoking won’t exact a price.”
Bai Yan smiled, recognizing the metaphor, and didn’t pursue Alan’s current thoughts.
“Why did you suddenly call me up here?” he asked.
“I felt lonely and wanted to chat, well, Bai Yan, I actually have something important to discuss… would you consider…”
“Challenging the next level of super beings?”
Alan turned, regarding his best friend with unprecedented earnestness.
“From this point, the risk of falling into ‘madness’ and meeting ‘death’ increases significantly. Perhaps for ordinary people, remaining at the ‘starting point’ their whole lives would be wiser.”
So this was why he’d been summoned. Bai Yan understood.
Well, what lay ahead?
Bai Yan remained silent without giving an immediate answer.
Recently, he had been continuously using “game” and “connection,” presumably consolidating his abilities.
Their time was running short.
“Very well, I agree,” he nodded.
After speaking, Bai Yan suddenly smiled and pointed toward a distant street.
“What do you see there?”
Alan squinted at the crowded street, where city dwellers constantly moved forward, pursuing their goals.
“I’m not sure.”
“A tide.”
Bai Yan paused momentarily before continuing with a smile, “The world’s development and changes are actually a constantly surging ‘tide.'”
“The tides rise and fall ceaselessly. Most people can only drift with the current forever, but a few can emerge and become those who direct the tide’s flow.”
Alan remained quiet for a while before speaking, “Neither of us wants to drift with the current.”
“Then let’s find a way to rise above the crowd.”
Bai Yan nodded and patted his shoulder, then suddenly froze.
He stared skyward.
A brilliant golden shooting star was descending toward Tatsumi City.
It was exceptional and beautiful, sweeping across the vast sky with majesty, like a solitary celestial child about to descend and transform the moment into eternity.
“Golden… Meteor?”
Alan gazed at the golden meteor solemnly, shaking his head slightly before speaking slowly, “That’s not a real meteor, but something far more formidable… It’s the royal guards, the impenetrable wall of the Air Alliance, and perhaps even the ‘Funeral Bell of Babel Tower.'”
“It was ‘Emperor.'”
