Chapter 85: The Application of the Entertainment Card
“I am Xiao Xia.”
Bai Yan smiled without revealing his true name, as he wasn’t foolish.
“Hmm? Is Xiao Xia your real name?”
Xiaoqiu asked incredulously, appearing stunned.
After all, she had just said her name was Xiao Qiu, yet the person before her claimed to be Xiao Xia, which felt wrong to her.
“Yes, my surname is Xiao, first name is Xia, you can just call me Xiao Xia. What’s the matter?”
Bai Yan’s face showed genuine surprise and astonishment, wearing an expression that seemed to ask, “why would someone doubt my name?”
His expression appeared so authentic that Xiao Qiu could only nod and cease questioning.
“I understand.”
Adelaide calmly observed the “honest man” Bai Yan beside her, knowing full well that this man was anything but honest.
“Well then, come with me.”
After speaking, Xiao Qiu nodded at Adelaide and said, “Thank you for bringing him over, Millie.”
Millie was most likely Adelaide’s pseudonym.
Adelaide nodded without responding, giving the impression she wasn’t one for conversation.
Bai Yan and Adelaide followed Xiao Qiu into the abandoned building together.
The abandoned building was immensely spacious, featuring nothing but bare concrete flooring and lacking any decorations or windows. Bai Yan thought it was an ideal location for criminal activities.
To his surprise, a substantial number of people had gathered on the fourth floor.
“Blessed be the Savior, my illness has improved greatly recently—it is all through the Savior’s grace.”
“Ah, I envy Xiao Qiu. I also wish to become the Savior’s favorite.”
“Xiao Qiu will surely become a hero like in the videos, sooner or later.”
Bai Yan listened to these intriguing conversations.
There were approximately fifty to sixty people present, including not only young men and women but also middle-aged women in their fifties. The “Babel Tower Aid Team” truly welcomed anyone and everyone.
When Xiao Qiu arrived among the crowd, everyone fell silent immediately, all eyes turning toward this girl.
“Everyone has watched the video and wishes to contribute to the Babel Tower, hoping to save the people in their own city.”
“Today, as always, let us pray for our ‘Savior’.”
Xiao Qiu rallied the crowd, and people seemed willing to follow her lead. They silently formed a circle, closed their eyes, raised their hands together, and began to pray.
Upon witnessing this scene, Bai Yan couldn’t help but draw out his phone and message, “Are these people all devotees of Babel Tower, wishing to aid it? Something seems off. Don’t they realize that Babel Tower doesn’t actually need help from ordinary people?”
Adelaide also retrieved her phone, giving him a look before typing her response: “Having spent a week here, I believe I understand their situation quite well.”
“The people here can be divided into three main categories. Some have fallen into unfortunate circumstances, whether facing debt or illness affecting themselves or loved ones, seeking the Savior in Babel Tower to rescue them.”
“Another group craves extraordinary power, believing there’s a chance to become superhuman—the greedy ones who covet the power displayed by Babel Tower in the video.”
She paused momentarily before continuing:
“The final small group comprises true enthusiasts of ‘Babel Tower’, and in a city of tens of millions, having a few such devotees is actually quite reasonable.”
Adelaide lit a lady’s cigarette, took two puffs, and spoke, “My reason for joining is that a family member is ill.”
Bai Yan replied, “Well, my reason is zealotry, or as you term it, ‘idiocy’.”
“What? Dedicating everything to an organization with entirely unclear purpose and origin—isn’t that foolish enough?”
Adelaide’s tone carried absolute certainty.
Bai Yan leisurely typed in response, “I think, at least they have the heart to contribute to this city. They may be foolish, but they’re not malicious.”
Adelaide, too weary to continue the conversation, joined the others, closing her eyes and pretending to pray with clasped hands.
After ten minutes, Xiao Qiu calmly approached Bai Yan and spoke softly, “Our Savior, the owner of Babel Tower, doesn’t need any common goods, and they possess absolute power that none can oppose… but what we lack is faith.”
“Faith?”
Bai Yan’s face lit up with excitement.
“I, I think I can—I am very devout!”
Xiao Qiu smiled and said, “Yes, it’s about faith. With sincere prayer, you can become part of the Savior.”
Bai Yan quickly learned that such gatherings weren’t daily occurrences and didn’t last long. They happened only once per weekend, lasting just a few hours.
After all, most attendees were ordinary people with work or school commitments, lacking the time and energy to constantly support Babel Tower.
Ultimately, this team didn’t appear particularly serious, yet Bai Yan knew instinctively that these people weren’t foolish enough to simply believe in this “Xiao Qiu.”
There had to be something extraordinary that had convinced them so thoroughly.
Indeed, Bai Yan soon discovered the answer.
A white light manifested in Xiao Qiu’s hand.
“Today, the Savior still blesses us.”
A brilliant white halo bloomed in the girl’s palm, causing visible relaxation among the crowd as each person’s body felt more at ease.
Those rays of light continued extending, and Xiao Qiu’s body began emanating a radiant glow, as if she were a celestial angel.
“Does that girl possess extraordinary powers?”
Adelaide returned, and Bai Yan couldn’t help but send another message.
“It’s said this was bestowed by the ‘Savior’.”
Adelaide responded, “Show enough devotion, and the Savior will grant you extraordinary power, enabling you to stand out and even become the ‘Arbiter’ from the video.”
“Everyone here knows this.”
——
After two hours, the gathering concluded, and as a new member, Bai Yan didn’t even need to introduce himself to others.
In essence, while the small group lacked cohesion, there was an unmistakable and genuine extraordinary power that left Bai Yan utterly perplexed.
What exactly was the mastermind behind this group attempting to achieve?
Bai Yan and Adelaide departed together after the dispersal.
After entering the car, despite the captain’s repeated insistence that the bothersome Bai Yan sit in the back, he brazenly pretended not to hear.
She drove back to the Demon Hunt Agency, silently fuming the entire way.
Bai Yan found it slightly surprising that the captain possessed such a personality; she was somewhat dominant yet quickly yielded when rejected—quite an unusual trait.
When the two returned to their 12th team office, Holly’s eyes sparkled as she watched a computer video.
She stood up abruptly!
“Wow, how come you both returned together?”
Holly approached with a grinning face and said:
“No way, no way, have you two become a couple somewhere beyond my sight? Oh, Captain, what are you doing?”
Adelaide, slightly irritated, approached and calmly extended her hands, tying Holly’s long ears together.
Holly cowered aside in pain, her face full of grievance as she carefully untangled her ears.
“So annoying.”
“You brought this upon yourself by teasing her first. Our captain’s punishment is justified.”
Bai Yan chuckled and noticed the big guy hadn’t returned; he must have still been working as a caregiver at the orphanage.
Meanwhile, “the Sleep God” Black Vulture continued snoring loudly, seemingly impervious to any disturbance.
Adelaide shook her head, removed her sunglasses, retrieved a beer bottle from the office mini-fridge and said, “I apologize for not mentioning the ‘Babel Tower Aid Team’ earlier. I wanted to handle it independently.”
Holly finally managed to hear and exclaimed with surprise, “What? What has the captain done behind our backs this time?”
So that’s how it is. It turns out I wasn’t being targeted after all, Bai Yan thought with relief.
He didn’t fear isolation but found it troublesome.
Bai Yan smiled and tied Holly’s ears again, causing the little rabbit to stomp the ground, forming a pit.
He shook his head and said, “Since you’re not targeting me but simply prefer working alone, I certainly won’t be angry about it.”
“Though I believe teamwork surpasses individual effort, I understand that everyone has their own knowledge boundaries—things they should and shouldn’t know.”
Adelaide poured a glass of beer and took a sip. She quietly said, “I’m glad you understand me. By the way, what’s your opinion of that Xiao Qiu?”
Bai Yan pondered briefly and said, “Hmm, she appears to be an ordinary girl.”
“But her speech is definitely problematic.”
“Perhaps this girl is more cunning than we imagine.”
——
After returning home that night, Bai Yan continued contemplating the day’s events.
Xiao Qiu had stood among the crowd, radiating like a saint.
“Such girls may also be villains; at least she’s currently pretending and deceiving—I wonder what her purpose is.”
He recalled Lin Bian’s story again.
The former “ace” had believed the girl’s “innocence,” leading to irreparable and terrible consequences.
Although Bai Yan hadn’t expressed his opinion then, the cruel and masterfully performed deception by the blue-eyed girl in the story had left an indelible impression.
He truly wanted to kill her.
He really wanted to see such a person’s expression in their moment of despair.
Bai Yan shook his head and smiled, “Well, I seem to harbor occasional cruel thoughts, which isn’t good, not good at all, Amen.”
Next, he opened the operator list of “Babel Tower” and reviewed it, finding that Mysterious Magic’s mood remained at 4.
Why wouldn’t this fellow’s mood improve regardless of his efforts?
Bai Yan considered for a moment and decided that instead of preparing tea, he would attempt using an Entertainment Card.
The Entertainment Card, rather than being called “entertainment,” might more accurately be described as… an adventure.
He possessed multiple Entertainment Cards and decided it was time to use them judiciously.
Therefore, Bai Yan applied the “Entertainment – Banquet Gourmet Card” to “Mysterious Magic.”
He examined his “Entertainment – Travel Card” and fell into contemplation.
“These Entertainment Cards often produce various interesting effects, just like this one… Well, I’ll let the two of them embark on a journey then.”
Well, even if danger might arise, your current strength should suffice to handle it.
After selecting the “Entertainment – Travel Card,” a game prompt appeared… requiring the selection of two people.
Bai Yan’s choices were undoubtedly “Nightsaber” and “Psychic Dancer.”
