Chapter 7: School Beauty
Bai Yan woke up on his narrow bed. The familiar light-colored ceiling caught his eyes, and a feeling of emptiness soon engulfed him.
Life in Noah was complicated. No cities could exist peacefully for long. Endless natural disasters forced them to strengthen their defenses, isolating them from one another.
Tatsumi was one of the massive independent cities in Noah. With a population of tens of millions, it was a well-developed city in the Air Alliance, and Bai Yan’s home. For the past thirteen years, he felt life in Tatsumi wasn’t much different from his original world.
Bai Yan got off the bed and went to wash up in the bathroom.
He had lived alone since arriving in Noah. The more he pondered life, fate, and the future, the emptier he felt.
Everyone found their own way to cast off loneliness – games were Bai Yan’s method of killing time.
“Pfft.” He spat out the water.
His breakfast was chicken and corn soup, both delicious and appetizing. After years of cooking, Bai Yan’s skills had improved considerably.
He carried a bowl of soup to the living room, turned on his phone, and ate while watching videos.
“I’m so lonely!”
After breakfast, Bai Yan changed clothes and left his room. The sound of neighbors playing basketball drifted up from downstairs.
Standing in the hallway of his apartment, he watched the family below. They seemed to be having a good time.
If given the choice, he would definitely not have chosen to transmigrate.
Though he lived a normal life in Noah, he had lost his most precious family and friends.
“I want to go back…”
Bai Yan went downstairs and left the apartment. He boarded the bus across the street, heading for Herendor University.
On the bus, he took out his phone and put on his earphones.
“Baby you can find me under the light, diamonds under my eyes.”
Bai Yan listened to music while playing Babel Tower.
After three days, Nightsaber had finally completed all the weekly missions. Through extensive combat, Nightsaber’s current mood and loyalty stood at 2 and 4 respectively.
Due to her “Glory and revenge” trait, Nightsaber was an operator with iron will. Her mood rarely dropped below 2. She could even take baths during auto-play to improve her spirits.
So Bai Yan hadn’t spent any Energy points sending her to the Recovery Spring. Nightsaber continued training without rest – she wouldn’t break down now anyway.
The bus arrived at the station.
Bai Yan disembarked and walked into the university, joining the stream of students entering the teaching building.
The weather was pleasant today. The sky was clear, the sunlight gentle.
He entered the familiar classroom to wait for class. Soft morning light filtered through the windows, creating a comfortable atmosphere.
It was a voluntary course in World Situation and History.
Classes had been suspended for several days due to the professor’s personal matters. They resumed this week, with all missed sessions to be made up in the coming days.
“Damn it! It’s eating into my breaks!”
Though the total number of lessons remained unchanged, Bai Yan was unhappy seeing the additional classes in his schedule.
Suddenly, someone patted his shoulder.
“Bai Yan, it’s you! We’re in the same course!”
Bai Yan turned around, slightly startled.
It was Alan, a handsome blond man with a sunny, innocent smile – Bai Yan’s only friend at Herendor.
Alan was Bai Yan’s complete opposite. He had countless friends at school and could chat with almost anyone. Whenever Bai Yan went out to eat with him, they’d inevitably run into Alan’s acquaintances.
Alan had many girlfriends. He was a genuine playboy.
Alan smiled, “Still just playing games these days?”
Bai Yan nodded, “Nothing wrong with games. They’re low-cost entertainment.”
Alan smoothed his hair and grinned, “Finally seeing you! While you’re enjoying your budget entertainment, I’ve been hanging out with real girls and am now completely broke.”
“Bai Yan, why not get a girlfriend? You’re 20 and handsome!”
Bai Yan shrugged and replied honestly, “I’m dirt poor. Besides, it’s troublesome and boring.”
Alan chuckled, “You’re going to die alone. People already think you’re weird. Show some initiative, man!”
Bai Yan smiled indifferently, offering no comment.
Alan sighed and said half-jokingly, “Sometimes I feel like the real world is just a game in your eyes. A boring, lousy game you’re not interested in. I sense emptiness in your eyes, and alienation from this world.”
“Hmm, should I tell you I’m a transmigrator?” Bai Yan thought to himself, then smiled and said, “Are you studying psychology now?”
“As always, and philosophy too. It helps with picking up girls.”
Alan suddenly narrowed his eyes, pointing at the students in the classroom. “More boys today.”
Bai Yan looked up and nodded, “Yeah. Do boys prefer this lesson?”
Alan shook his head. “No, Mu Ling’s attending this class. She’s the most popular girl at Herendor. Charming, with good vibes. She has many admirers on campus.”
“Most popular girl?”
Bai Yan fell into thought. He hadn’t had much contact with girls since transmigrating.
These days, he even preferred fictional girls +_+
“Interested?” Alan asked, eyes narrowing.
“Whatever. It has nothing to do with me.” Bai Yan shrugged.
“You really are weird.”
As Mu Ling slowly pushed open the door and entered the classroom, all eyes immediately turned to her.
She didn’t mind – she was used to it since childhood.
In just a few months, she had become the school’s most popular girl. People referred to the four campus beauties as “the Top and the Three Goddesses.”
Mu Ling was “the Top.” The others were “the Three.”
To be honest, she didn’t care about such things.
The real world was just an enormous, artificial park. Mortals weren’t truly alive. Their souls were false and ephemeral. With each death, they lost their memories and reincarnated, unable to maintain their true selves.
Only Superpower souls were sturdy and indestructible. They wouldn’t lose memories or face forced reincarnation. Instead, they wandered the world seeking the possibility of revival. Emotions were mere false comfort for them. Mu Ling had always known this.
After three days of training, she felt close to breaking down. She was too exhausted to think.
She had expected this training to be similar to before. Unexpectedly, the monsters’ speed and strength had been enhanced this time, increasing significantly each day.
Every day brought new challenges.
She had died countless times!
Pain and exhaustion were carved into her heart as she was assigned to clear several hidden cult strongholds.
Mu Ling wondered how the Savior had found traces of the cult.
One thing was clear though – even without meeting other operators, Babel Tower was definitely a massive organization. Numerous members secretly lurked throughout the city, monitoring everything.
Mu Ling sighed wearily and found her seat.
The Savior had become her nightmare. His voice in her head made her tremble every time.
“I’m so tired.”
Bai Yan observed Mu Ling. She had delicate features. Her white hair and purple eyes were striking. Combined with her perfect figure, she seemed like a goddess from fiction.
No one could deny her beauty.
“She is indeed a beauty.”
The familiar voice startled Mu Ling, making her body instinctively tremble.
Though the voice hadn’t come from her mind, she couldn’t mistake it. It was definitely that man who had mercilessly controlled her body and mind these past three days.
Mu Ling took a deep breath, gathering her courage to look toward the source of the voice.
