Chapter 6: Weekly Missions
Muffled sobs echoed through a church situated in a remote district. At its center stood an ancient stone altar, its edges marked by numerous cracks.
“Boohoo…”
Four young girls were seated on the altar, weeping. Their limbs were bound, and black cloth covered their eyes.
White candles surrounded the altar, their flames casting light onto the blank faces of black-robed men who formed a circle while chanting.
“All desires are meaningless.”
“Everything exists in perfect balance.”
Behind the altar stood Priest Dore, silently praying – not to the Alliance’s sanctioned deity, but to “Ash,” the malevolent outer god known as “The Lord of Balance.”
Dore’s gaunt frame and glinting eyes marked him as Ash’s devoted follower. Tonight, he would conduct a grand ritual.
“Whether you’re daughters of nobility, university administrators, ordinary workers, or the impoverished… as sacrifices, you’re all equal now. Everything exists in perfect balance,” Dore proclaimed, trembling with excitement as if his frail body might collapse. “This sacrifice will succeed, bringing us closer to the Lord of Balance’s domain.”
His next ritual would require four girls of identical status to achieve true equilibrium.
Tears streamed down the young girls’ faces as they shuddered. Gagged, they could only whimper while awaiting their fate upon the altar.
The youngest, a noble’s daughter in luxurious attire, had lost control of her bladder.
“Begin!” Dore rasped gleefully.
Suddenly, the cathedral doors burst open, allowing a shaft of gentle sunlight to pierce the gloom.
The followers turned in shock.
A woman clad in black, wearing a white mask and wielding a massive sword, stood in the doorway.
It was Mu Ling.
She surveyed the scene dispassionately, quickly grasping the situation.
[Combat Mission: Eliminate the cult followers]
Gripping her sword, she declared, “Confront your sins!”
Priest Dore swiftly drew an enchanted weapon.
“Deep Blue World”
Time froze instantly, rendering everything motionless.
The world appeared bathed in deep blue through Mu Ling’s eyes.
Two seconds elapsed… While everyone remained paralyzed, Mu Ling had positioned herself behind Dore.
Swoosh!
A dark figure flashed past as Dore and his weapon split apart. His shocked expression remained fixed as blood and viscera scattered.
“Priest!” the cultists screamed.
Though blindfolded, the girls sensed the unfolding events and trembled with terror.
The white mask appeared coldly emotionless as her black coat billowed.
Mu Ling sheathed her broadsword, somewhat puzzled.
While she recognized Deep Blue World’s immense power, the priest’s swift defeat despite his Superhuman status surprised her.
“The Priest has fallen!” The cultists panicked.
As they fled, Mu Ling’s body moved instinctively. Though uncertain of the mechanism, she maintained perfect control.
She pursued the cultists, her massive sword claiming lives as blood stained its surface.
Terror-stricken cultists wailed in despair.
The battle concluded rapidly.
Her black broadsword had claimed over ten cultists, leaving the cathedral strewn with corpses that turned Mu Ling’s stomach.
She acknowledged that without the Savior’s aid, such efficient elimination would have been impossible.
As she slowly withdrew her blade, Mu Ling thought, ‘The slaughter ends.’
“Mission complete,” she announced involuntarily.
Suddenly, she regained independent movement.
Is it finished?
Mu Ling observed the four trembling girls on the altar.
Though blindfolded, they had heard the screams. They knew a woman had rescued them, despite her mechanical tone.
Without prompting, Mu Ling approached the altar to free them.
…
Mu Ling drove an abandoned vehicle, taking the girls to a nearby fast-food establishment.
“Stay calm and quiet. I’ll remove your blindfolds now. Help will arrive soon.” She waited until they left the cathedral before unveiling their eyes.
The girls stared at their savior – the black-clad woman in a white mask carrying a massive sword. This valiant huntress left an indelible impression.
“Wait in that establishment,” Mu Ling instructed, exiting the vehicle.
The girls exchanged glances before eyeing the restaurant.
A chubby, round-faced girl exclaimed, “That big sister saved us! She’s amazing!”
“Should we wait here?” another questioned.
The girl in expensive clothing reassured them, “Don’t worry. My father, being noble, will help. The Demon Hunt Agency’s night watch will come.”
Noble?
The others paused, realizing her different status. Only the professor’s daughter recognized the DHA.
The noble girl attempted a confident smile, but her facade crumbled.
“Even noble children wet themselves!” the chubby girl announced.
The noble girl flushed crimson.
—
Mu Ling remained nearby, monitoring from a rooftop until the night watch arrived.
Her elimination of ten cultists and their priest had complicated matters.
Her enemy list had grown beyond Black Star.
Black Star, an evil Alliance organization, worshipped the fearsome Chaos Star.
Their influence pervaded independent cities across all social strata, marking them as a premier dark force.
Mu Ling clenched her fists, knowing Black Star had destroyed her family.
Yet Babel Tower clearly rivaled their power.
Given the Savior’s gift of extraordinary abilities, she would fulfill any request.
As an adult who had faced numerous setbacks, she accepted the Savior’s directives without complaint.
At least her current forced actions served good purposes.
However, Mu Ling suddenly worried about potential manipulation against her will.
—
In his classroom, Bai Yan completed a weekly mission on his phone.
“Auto-play is now available!”
This feature was crucial for mobile games. With multiple operators, manual mission control became impractical.
Future missions could be handled automatically by Nightsaber.
The priest dropped an R-grade card after elimination.
“Enchanted Silver Pistol (R)”
Worthless.
Bai Yan expected this, knowing SSR drops were rare.
He also earned 30 Legendary Points, convertible to 30 Energy Points – enough for one operator summon.
However, he preferred saving for ten summons simultaneously. Energy requirements for foundation construction often prevented accumulation.
Balancing Energy Points between foundations and summoning required strategy.
As a veteran player who had conquered Babel Tower after multiple failures, Bai Yan understood the game mechanics well.
Regarding next steps?
He’d considered placing Nightsaber in the Recovery Spring, but noticed her mood and loyalty had increased by 1.
“Missions saving innocents boost operator attributes.” This discovery allowed him to forgo the spring treatment.
Saving 10 Energy Points was beneficial.
“Train diligently during auto-play, Nightsaber. Lazy girls get warehoused!” Bai Yan muttered.
