Chapter 581: Aftermath
They wiped them out!
The law enforcement officers showed impressive training, while the members of the Dark Song Order in the church were noticeably panicked, creating a stark contrast.
“Don’t shoot!”
“We surrender!”
But they quickly bowed their heads and crouched down, choosing not to resist.
In that moment, no unnecessary loss of life occurred, and in truth, it was a very wise decision.
Nian, hiding in a shadowed corner, remained quiet.
Of course, the situation where no one died was something she did not wish to see.
Thus, Nian pressed the button on her body once more.
“Bang!”
Suddenly, white smoke filled the church, startling both the enforcers and the members of the Dark Song Order.
Her vision blurred.
Nian sighed and played the prerecorded audio she had prepared long before.
“Bang, bang, bang!”
A loud sound of gunfire erupted!
Wails and cries of anguish filled the air non-stop!
The law enforcement officers could no longer stay composed. They immediately fired toward the source of the gunshots. In an instant, all the members of the Dark Song Order who had been captured fell down.
“Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah!”
The remaining members of the Dark Song Order reached into their clothes, drawing weapons, and started fighting back.
Nian had remained hidden in the shadows, still and silent.
Five minutes passed.
The gunfire finally stopped, but the cries of pain continued. Some were gravely injured but had not yet died.
As the smoke cleared, the law enforcement officers, having suffered heavy losses, realized that all the members of the Dark Song Order had been killed.
“Ah…”
“I survived.”
“These evil cult fanatics are so despicable!”
Then, someone shouted:
“There are still survivors here!”
They immediately became on edge again, raising their guns and pointing them toward where the survivors had appeared.
And from the corner, walking out with her hands raised in surrender, was Nian.
“Don’t shoot, I’m undercover Agent A!” she said right away.
The group exchanged confused glances but didn’t lower their weapons.
Nian turned her head gently and immediately spotted the lifeless body of the black-robed girl. She too had fallen victim to the stray gunfire, her robe soaked in blood.
“Um,” she muttered.
Isn’t it?
Nian furrowed her brow.
Indeed, although her incarnation wasn’t far from her true form… the random silence incarnation that manifested might not have always taken the shape of a young girl, and it could even be someone who wasn’t female.
“What is going on with this person?”
“Mr. A? Which department even knows who Mr. A is?”
At that very moment, the middle-aged man who had once interacted with Nian, via the mechanical bird from the law enforcement department, entered from outside.
He took in the bleak scene around him, then glanced at Nian.
“Mr. A… my apologies.”
Nian, initially bewildered, frowned and then asked, “What? What do you mean?”
The middle-aged man spoke quietly, “The order from above is to eliminate you here… because the mysterious Mr. A, you are the founder of the Dark Song Order, and everything you’ve done is just to save yourself!”
“I’m not!”
Before Nian could fully respond, the middle-aged man waved his hand and ordered, “Fire!”
“Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!”
Amid the chaos of gunfire, Nian’s body collapsed to the ground, without putting up any resistance.
Is it over?
But the middle-aged man’s eyes narrowed with suspicion.
“What, how could this possibly happen…”
He stepped forward and found that the young girl’s body was damaged. It was a robot, its skin torn, circuits exposed. It was clearly not a real person inside.
It wasn’t a living being at all!
Just like that mechanical bird, both were fake!
“Could it be, could it be… oh no!”
The middle-aged man’s expression shifted drastically. He quickly pulled out his phone and tried calling his superior.
A year ago, Nian, who had assumed the identity of “Ke Xin,” no longer lived at home.
Even during her graduation ceremony, Nian was actually a robot.
As for her joining the Dark Song Order, she was obviously not a real person.
That would have been too dangerous and imprudent.
Though she appeared to be an ordinary high school girl, she could jump from rooftops, leap from the third floor, and even withstand the nerve-disorienting gas without fainting.
Nian, who secretly manipulated the rebel forces within the Giant Hive, was adept at disguising herself and controlling others as the “mastermind behind the scenes.”
Now, she was simply returning to her old tactics.
The real Nian was in a safehouse beneath the city.
She wore a white dress and stood in front of a whiteboard.
The board was covered with numerous notes and photos, all densely written with words. Many of them were connected, all leading to a single suspicious target.
Nian reached out and touched it.
Right now.
“It’s confirmed.”
At the law enforcement agency.
Many officers were busy coordinating.
Everyone was completely drained. So many things were happening at once.
A well-dressed elderly man, his hair graying at the temples, walked slowly into the executive office.
There was a kind of dignified authority in his gaze, making others hesitant to look directly at him.
In just two short years, he had risen through the ranks, bypassing others to become a senior member of the enforcement department.
People admired him, and some even feared him.
“Ding ding ding!”
Just then, the phone in the office rang.
The man turned and answered the call.
Suddenly, his eyes widened.
The window wasn’t closed.
Outside…
A mechanical bird flew in.
His eyes lit up with brilliance!
He dashed toward the office door at lightning speed.
In that instant, a burst of fiery light erupted from within the mechanical bird.
“Boom!”
The entire floor was engulfed in flames.
“It’s over.”
Nian stepped out of the safe house.
The mission succeeded.
She watched as the world slowly crumbled.
Everything in the sky turned into tiny twinkling dots, and the surrounding buildings vanished one by one.
Everything was vanishing.
Nian took a deep breath and pulled out her phone.
“Hello, Mom.”
“Ke Xin, what’s wrong?”
The voice on the other end was her familiar “Mother,” while the virtual world around her seemed to collapse slowly.
“Mom…”
She choked, struggling to find her words.
“Kexin, what’s wrong? Did something happen? Mom’s here, weren’t you supposed to visit a classmate tonight?”
“Mother” was highly perceptive and sensed something was wrong, her voice filled with concern.
“Ke Xin? Where are you?”
Nian gently shook her head, took a deep breath, and said, “It’s nothing, Mom. I just… miss you and Dad a bit.”
“Why are you talking like that? We were together only a few hours ago, right?”
The “mother” on the other end sounded confused.
“Ke Xin, what’s wrong?”
She couldn’t understand what was going on with her daughter.
It would forever be incomprehensible.
And there would never be a chance to understand again.
The world around them continued to crumble.
Everything would soon cease to exist.
On the street, the people had no idea that the world was disappearing, nor did they know that soon, they too would vanish.
From beginning to end, it had all just been a game.
Nian understood this very well.
Let’s pretend it was just a dream.
When she woke up, she felt deeply moved.
“Um, I’m okay.”
Nian suddenly burst into tears, but quickly turned them into a smile and said,
“I’m just so thankful to all of you.”
“Actually, over this time… I’ve been really happy, living the life I’ve always wanted.”
“Thank you.”
