Chapter 557: The Past
Maryse stared coldly at Merete Chambers.
“Witch, is it you?”
Aurora shook her head. “So many years have passed. What’s the point of coming back now?”
The atmosphere was tense. No one in the room held a particularly good opinion of witches.
During Mu Ling’s reign over the Babel Tower, Merete Chambers had already distanced herself from the tower. She rarely returned to Noah and refused to acknowledge Mu Ling’s leadership.
Alan’s expression darkened. His dislike for her was no secret. The grudge from over a decade ago still lingered, unresolved and bitter.
If not for her occasional usefulness to the Babel Tower, Alan would have refused to even stand in the same room as her, let alone engage in conversation.
He glared at her and asked sharply, “Merete Chambers, why have you come back now? What do you really want? Are you planning to use us again?”
“Have you set your sights on the last remnants of value the Babel Tower holds?”
Merete Chambers faced the hostility with an unflinching smile, calm and composed, showing no trace of anger.
“Don’t be so aggressive, Alan,” she replied softly.
Alan snorted, unmoved.
In the past, he had trusted her implicitly, unaware of the witch’s true nature. But time had changed him. Alan had seen too much, experienced too much, and now carried the weight of authority.
Merete’s smile remained unfazed, as radiant as a blooming flower.
“So,” she said lightly, “what has happened in Noah while I was away? Why are there so many empty seats at this meeting of the Babel Tower?”
Nian sighed deeply, while Aurora remained silent for a long moment before finally speaking.
“Many things have happened in the past decade,” she said.
Merete nodded thoughtfully. “And Mu Ling? What happened to her? Where is that girl? It doesn’t seem like her to abandon everything. Is this darkness her doing?”
Inas, observing the witch, couldn’t help but wonder why her mother and aunt had never mentioned her.
Everyone was cautious of Merete, unsure of her motives.
Nino, standing apart, remained silent, his expression unreadable.
Evie broke the silence, her voice calm as she began to explain.
“In the Babel Tower… many years ago, after that fateful day, we lost contact with the Savior. Leadership of the tower was temporarily entrusted to Mu Ling.”
Merete nodded again. “Yes, I know all about that.”
Evie continued, “Back then, the Savior sacrificed their power to seal away countless Outer Gods. But their followers—the Spawns of the Outer Gods—still remained. They’ve been relentless, seeking to free the Outer Gods and take revenge upon Noah.”
She paused, her voice heavy. “The threat grew, and a great crisis descended upon Noah’s world.”
Merete nodded grimly. “As I suspected… the Spawn, the followers of the Outer Gods, are behind this.”
“Yes. And among them, the fallen deities,” Evie added.
The Fallen Deities.
Corrupted beings from countless universes, consumed by madness and evil after worshipping the Outer Gods. They were dangerous, powerful, and unrelenting.
Years ago, dozens of fallen deities had besieged Noah’s barriers, their aim to shatter the world’s defenses and let chaos reign.
Mu Ling had stepped forward, wielding the power of the Babel Tower and countless relics. She had fought valiantly, defeating ten fallen deities in succession.
But the remaining deities, fearing her strength, united against her. Two of them, high-ranked fallen deities of immense power, joined forces, leaving Mu Ling in a desperate position.
Finally, Mu Ling made the ultimate decision. Transforming herself into the night sky, she sealed the cracks in Noah’s barriers, fortifying the world against further invasion.
Her sacrifice kept the fallen deities out, but countless Spawn still lurked within Noah, causing unending chaos and devastation.
A new era began.
For over a decade, the people of Noah endured, struggling under the veil of darkness. Yet they held on to hope, their faith unbroken.
“In these years,” Evie continued, “Red Moon disappeared, Old Mike went missing, and the Magic Sword was lost. Even the Scarlet Moon suffered greatly… it nearly drove her mad.”
Merete Chambers listened quietly, sipping her tea as the weight of the past filled the room.
“So,” she said, her voice calm, “what is the purpose of this meeting?”
Alan answered curtly, “Two things.”
“First, Amy has proposed a major plan to send most of Noah’s people away. To evacuate them to other universes. There’s no reason for ordinary people to stay here.”
Amy’s mechanical voice chimed in. “I’ve sent millions of Omnics to scout different universes. In one, with a slow time flow, they developed a device capable of transferring large populations.”
She paused. “I suggest moving ninety-nine percent of Noah’s people. Staying here only puts them in greater danger.”
Aurora nodded slowly. “I agree.”
Evie also voiced her support.
Inas hesitated before speaking. “But some people may want to stay.”
Alan nodded. “We won’t force anyone to leave. Those who wish to remain may do so.”
Amy added, “The destination has already been chosen. It’s a world that can accommodate the population.”
With the first matter settled, Alan turned to the second.
“The second matter,” he said, “is to ask: does anyone have information on how to revive the Savior? Even the smallest lead?”
The room fell silent.
After years apart, no one expected progress on such an impossible task.
But then, Nino stepped forward.
“I do,” he said.
All eyes turned to him as he continued.
“I’ve found information about the Final Stele—a Ruin-level Relic belonging to the Outer God, The End. It may be the most powerful Ruin-level Relic in existence.
“If we obtain it, there’s hope to turn things around.”
