Chapter 530: The Crowd
So that’s how it was.
Here, at the Babel Tower, people came together and listened to the divine message.
Merete Chambers’ smile on her face was genuine and heartfelt.
Now, I am also a member of the Babel Tower.
She also felt the mask appearing on her face.
It was a jet-black mask, resembling the face of a fox, completely concealing the witch’s appearance.
“Is my symbol a black fox?”
The witch squinted her eyes.
“Um, the masks of these Babel Tower members are all different animals, which probably reveals their different personalities. As for why there are black ones and white ones… could it be related to their moral levels?”
Merete Chambers, with remarkable intelligence, merely glanced around and came close to guessing the reason behind the different forms of masks.
“We will give everything to you, our great Savior.”
Mu Ling, who was kneeling on one knee, spoke with a firm and determined voice, filled with unwavering belief.
The other members of the Babel Tower heard the voice, but none of them showed any reaction, except for Mu Ling, who cooperated wholeheartedly.
She truly believed in the all-powerful Savior above all else.
Mu Ling, being given the opportunity to show her loyalty, would never let it slip away.
“He’s becoming more and more like a dog.”
The Scarlet Moon, a girl with a slender build, stood a little distance away. With her arms crossed and a look of disdain on her face, she did not hesitate to sharply criticize Mu Ling’s actions.
She knew she could never give her heart to anyone in this lifetime, nor would she ever look up to another being.
Not in a million years.
“And there were new members…”
Scarlet Moon shifted her gaze toward the witch, her brow furrowed. She could sense an unpleasant aura radiating from this woman.
Meanwhile, Merete Chambers nodded politely toward the Scarlet Moon, offering a smile that remained hidden beneath her mask.
Ah, so it’s the Queen of the Scarlet Moon. She’s here, just as expected.
Merete Chambers had spent years in Tatsumi City, and she was quite familiar with the Queen of the Scarlet Moon. At one point, she even devised a strategy to confront her. She knew the Scarlet Moon’s personality and weaknesses inside out.
Aurora still wore her armor, and anyone who saw her could tell she was a knight through and through.
She walked over to Old Mike and, unexpectedly, let out a laugh.
“You’ve changed too.”
“The weakness you once carried has completely disappeared. What a wonderful transformation.”
“A soldier has returned.”
The figure behind Old Mike’s mask smiled, responding calmly, “It’s only through hardship and despair that one can truly be reborn… I’ve learned that staying angry and running from problems won’t lead anywhere.”
“A warrior’s true return is on the battlefield.”
“Hmm, so you plan to swear allegiance to the Savior?” Aurora asked.
Old Mike chuckled lightly, “You’ve misunderstood, knight. I just refuse to run away. And if the chance comes, I’ll be the first to flee.”
Aurora was left standing there, stunned.
Maryse stood happily beside the profligate, showing no sign of being disturbed by earlier events.
Speaking of which, the profligate, the Keeper of Secrets, and the Savior were all present at once.
Yet, the Savior was the true entity, while the profligate and the Keeper of Secrets were simply avatars.
Bai Yan was like a split-screen operator—multitasking on a level that seemed impossible for ordinary people.
Maryse beamed brightly, her eyes gleaming with joy. “Mr. Profligate, you came to save me last time. How wonderful! I knew you’d show up.”
Although she hadn’t witnessed it firsthand, Maryse knew about the outcome of the Battle of the Hive… It was when Profligate had appeared out of nowhere, causing chaos and driving away the arrogant ‘World’ in a storm of destruction!
Hooray!
She continued cheerfully,
“Mr. Xia must have been terrified and ran away, haha! He was no match for your power. He only liked showing off in front of weak half-elves. Now, he must feel like an idiot… He used to be the leader of the Air Alliance, but from now on, we should call him the shame of the Air Alliance!”
Bai Yan smiled silently, not saying a word. Meanwhile, Maryse continued her nonstop chatter, her words flowing like a fast stream.
Maryse’s eyes sparkled as she said, “Next time, let’s capture Mr. Xia and have him serve me tea and water. We can make Shi Nianyu massage your shoulders and wash your feet… Actually, I’ll have Shi Nianyu wash my feet instead. I don’t want her touching you.”
She cursed Mr. Xia’s ancestors, even going as far as to blame the family dog, before finally calming down.
Elsewhere, Kaluoer and her sister Evie stood near the Keeper of Secrets.
These three were quiet, as they had been living together for a long time. In this crowded place, there wasn’t much to say.
Alan and Ganis were having a conversation. They had been living together in Tatsumi City for some time and had forged a deep friendship.
“Congratulations! I didn’t expect you to progress so quickly.”
Ganis listened intently as Alan spoke of Eli’s situation, his face filled with astonishment.
“Yes, it happened quickly… quite suddenly. I never expected her to…”
Alan paused, unable to continue, as he couldn’t share that he had been caught off guard during the night and was the passive participant.
It was a conversation he couldn’t quite bring himself to have.
“What were you going to say?” Ganis asked, raising an eyebrow with insight.
“No worries!”
Alan swiftly switched the topic, “What I meant to say is, it seems the Babel Tower can now bring back ordinary people from death. The Savior’s power should have been restored significantly, making our chances of saving World even higher!”
“I feel like we few are unnecessary,” Red Moon murmured to herself.
“Gurgle ╰(°▽°)╯,” the slime chimed in, agreeing.
Near the edge of the crystal palace, Slime, Magic Sword, Red Moon, and Nian quietly arrived at a place, as though they had been guided there.
Nian was surprised to find that the slime creature and the flying sword were both Core Operators of the Babel Tower.
She hadn’t realized it before!
For some reason, when standing before the slime creature and magical sword, Red Moon didn’t feel any fear.
She pointed toward the towering mecha in the distance and asked curiously, “What exactly is that? And where’s the wheelchair girl? Why isn’t Miss Amy here?”
“Gurgle? Σ(っ °Д °;)っ” The slime creature seemed puzzled.
“Maybe that’s Miss Amy,” said the magical sword, its voice light and certain.
“No way!” Red Moon exclaimed, looking surprised and unconvinced.
“Gurgle!” The slime seemed equally taken aback.
“Don’t copy me!”
Red Moon shot a glare at the slime, giving it a playful tap with her arm—not too hard—before being swiftly swallowed by the slime.
Nian froze in shock.
Does… this thing eat people?
She instinctively took a step back, but the slime noticed and swallowed her too.
“Gurgle.”
A moment later, both Red Moon and Nian were spat out by the slime.
“Ew! Gross! Stay away from me!”
Red Moon was drenched in slime, utterly disgusted. She immediately tried to distance herself from the creature.
“…” Nian furrowed her brows but managed to keep her calm. She quickly moved away, maintaining her composure despite the situation.
“Gurgle…”
The mischievous slime suddenly took on a pitiful demeanor, as if it had just been playing a harmless prank, not intending to scare them. It didn’t want to be alone without someone to interact with.
The magic sword floated silently by, seemingly aware of everything.
“Once pranks go too far, they’re bound to be shunned. Isn’t that just how things are?”
At that moment, Alan glanced toward the Profligate.
“That person is still pretending…”
He sensed something magical.
Out of everyone, only Alan knew the true identity of the Profligate.
The others thought the Profligate was a venerable elder from the Babel Tower, a mighty being from another world.
Knowing this secret that only a select few were privy to brought Alan a strange sense of joy.
He even began to understand why Bai Yan had chosen to hide his identity.
Meanwhile, the witch observed everyone leisurely, carefully noting each action and using her “Discernment” ability to analyze their personalities.
She found it all quite amusing.
How entertaining, wasn’t it?
That’s Bai Yan—who plays dual roles.
Whether as the profligate or the Keeper of Secrets, they were both one and the same person—Bai Yan.
Yet, he had this remarkable ability to multitask.
He displayed two completely different personalities: one frivolous and carefree, and the other steady, serious, and reserved.
How interesting… Should I expose him?
The witch narrowed her eyes.
“This person seems to have quite a romantic luck… It seems that Scarlet Moon’s thoughts are also on him, haha.”
If I expose him, will the girls find out that they have been deceived, discover Bai Yan’s secret, and turn against him?
Thinking about such things just makes it seem interesting.
Soon, the witch noticed that the half-elf girl, the Queen of the Scarlet Moon, and the girl with wolf ears all looked at her, almost as if they were curious and cautious at the same time.
They were all strong in the Apocalypse, fully able to sense the gaze upon them.
But the witch paid no attention to the gaze of others.
She looked at the others again.
Little did they know, the Babel Tower was actually more loosely held together than they had imagined. The beginning of this meeting turned out to be nothing more than casual conversations among everyone. Although the lofty and enigmatic Savior seemed mysterious, they didn’t impose a great sense of pressure on the people.
Because of her previous experiences of being manipulated, as well as her nature, Merete Chambers had imagined the scene of the Babel Tower meeting quite differently.
She believed that everyone would kneel down on the ground, inside the Babel Tower, and shout the name of the Savior while silently listening to the divine message. No one dared to speak out of turn.
Finally, everyone continued to shout, departed, and then they were manipulated to carry out their tasks.
Little did she know, the atmosphere inside the Babel Tower was completely different from what she had imagined.
At that moment, Merete Chambers once again heard a voice in her mind.
The divine message came once again.
[A new Doomsday Crisis is about to arrive.]
[“We need to gather all our strength, at any cost, to prevent the destruction of World,” they said with determination.]
[“This time…,” they whispered.]
[The enemy of the Babel Tower is…]
[The divine being.]
