Chapter 51
“Mission completed, Babel Tower Legendary Points +80.”
“Successfully captured the new monster ‘Shadow Fiend’ (Chaotic influence has been eliminated after capture). Resource investment is now available for developing new mutation technology.”
“Bonus mission reward: Energy Points +100.”
“Successfully captured six members of the ‘Black Star Faction’.”
Bai Yan stood up, stretched his neck, and realized he had been completely absorbed in his task.
He walked to the window, looked at the dark sky, knowing what would unfold in the next few hours.
Although he hadn’t received any Mystical Power or Relic, the reward of 100 Energy Points was quite satisfactory.
“With this, I’ve earned 180 Energy Points. It won’t be long until I can perform another 10 summons. Listen, vampire, come here.”
He checked his phone again and noticed a notification.
[Alert: The world line has changed. Level three of the ‘Black Star Faction’ is blocked, and levels 4, 5, and 6 have undergone modifications.]
‘Incredible, I’ve managed to skip one level directly. Perhaps it’s because I defeated Number Three.’
Bai Yan was unfamiliar with this situation.
The completion level of the crucial emergency mission “Moment of Truth” and the main mission “Doomsday Crisis” would cause worldline changes, affecting the subsequent progress of the entire game.
The main mission “Doomsday Crisis” was the most critical and challenging component of the Babel Tower game.
It was the only task without save points or loading options.
Direct failure meant game over, and even if one continued with difficulties, there would be no way to return to the previous checkpoint. Once something was lost, it remained lost forever. It was exceptionally difficult to achieve a perfect completion in one attempt.
Bai Yan contemplated briefly and decided to send the Shadow Demon to the Alienation Technology Institute. He then proceeded to transfer the six captured cultists, designating them as “logistics personnel.”
[Alert: Logistics personnel are being deployed.]
[The logistical personnel have been deployed. Select new technologies for research.]
Bai Yan examined the current research status.
[Study of Spawn–Gravity of Darkness in progress. Current progress: 44%. No acceleration. Blood of Darkness has been produced.]
[Shadow Fiend, available.]
It would be wasteful to let the materials remain idle. He dragged the Shadow Fiend from the second bottom grid to the institute.
[The Shadow Fiend has been deployed. Research initiated. Current progress: 0. No acceleration. No output.]
After completing these tasks, Bai Yan finally reviewed the operator files for Nightsaber and Psychic Dancer, discovering significant changes.

The future Queen of the Night, invincible in darkness.
Nightsaber’s loyalty had reached 8. Bai Yan understood her personality well; as long as he didn’t commit any unforgivable acts, such as burning, murdering, or assaulting someone in her presence, her loyalty should remain stable.
He knew that 9 was essentially the limit for normal operators. A loyalty of 10 was reserved for fanatics, and it wasn’t easily achieved.
In many instances, excessive loyalty proved problematic. Such operators would become intolerant of any speech or action potentially harmful to the Babel Tower, killing without hesitation.
For such cases, there existed a saying: “Operators act, and the Babel Tower pays the bills.”
Similarly, normal individuals couldn’t maintain a mood of 10, as it represented pleasure comparable to physiological peaks, which would drive one to madness and depravity. With such a high threshold, even the most resolute knight would feel distressed upon losing access to this supreme pleasure, potentially doing anything to experience it again.

Ordinary people’s thoughts lie exposed before her, and this uncontrollable power has revealed to her the world’s corruption. The future queen of minds, a formidable being capable of controlling all living creatures.
Bai Yan glanced at her loyalty rating and recalled her mental mutterings and curses against him. “Unbelievable,” he thought.
Psychic Dancer must have experienced something recently to cause such a dramatic mood decline. Given the addition of “Family” to her list of hates, she likely encountered serious familial conflicts.
“I’ll inquire about her needs at our next meeting.”
Bai Yan reviewed the information once more and noticed her Mind Reading had reached its evolution threshold. The potential new derivative abilities remained unknown but intriguing.
Several hours later.
“Bang bang!”
Someone knocked on the door. Bai Yan put away his phone as Alan entered with a smile.
“Babel Tower members have clashed with the Black Star Faction. The prophecy successfully tracked the movements of the special target ‘Mr. Mystery.’ Given this development, our chief has called an emergency meeting.”
Bai Yan nodded calmly, showing no surprise.
“Very well.”
“Why aren’t you surprised?”
“These events are common lately, aren’t they? These Superoperators fight daily.”
‘He has a point,’ Alan thought, nodding without pursuing the matter further.
They left Bai Yan’s office together, heading toward the first-floor hall of the DHA Bureau.
This meeting differed from the previous important one, as it required the attendance of almost all night watchmen in the Bureau’s lobby.
En route, Alan experienced an odd sensation. Fighting alongside Bai Yan again… their last collaboration had been thirteen years ago.
Without Bai Yan’s intervention, he would have perished long ago. That incident had granted him entry into the Demon Hunt Agency.
Alan suddenly clapped Bai Yan’s shoulder and asked with a smile, “Bai Yan, remember thirteen years ago when those high school students from the neighboring school bullied me?”
“Yes, what about it?” Bai Yan recalled the time when he had newly arrived in this world, having lost his relatives and friends, somewhat unhinged.
“When I was crying, I found you collecting trash. You took one of my coins and had me guess heads or tails. You said you’d take the coin if I guessed wrong but help drive away the bullies if I guessed correctly… and I won the toss.”
Alan paused momentarily, furrowing his brows before continuing, “Wait, you scoundrel, did you plan to take my money regardless back then?”
“Ha, I was genuinely impoverished then, my apologies.”
Bai Yan rubbed his nose awkwardly, though he felt no real remorse. Those were merely past caprices.
Alan nodded gently and gazed ahead while speaking, “Actually, I’ve always wanted to ask: if I had guessed wrong and lost the toss… would you still have helped me?”
‘I wouldn’t have…’ Bai Yan nearly blurted out.
‘Losers face punishment, winners receive rewards,’ immediately crossed his mind.
However, he realized his current perspective might differ… at least now.
“I’m uncertain,” Bai Yan shook his head, recognizing his significant personal evolution.
He continued honestly, “But back then, I definitely wouldn’t have helped you.”
Indeed, at that time, Bai Yan’s actions were entirely governed by “games” and “winning.”
“That’s what I thought.” Alan nodded slowly, remaining silent for a while.
“You’ve become more human now. Perhaps that’s not such a bad thing.”
