Chapter 49
Nightsaber and Psychic Dancer ventured into battle.
As soon as Bai Yan selected the two operators, the scene on his screen began to transform into a grid-like map reminiscent of a turn-based fighting game.
It was a deserted nighttime street, decorated with vivid grids on the ground.
At the top of the grid stood an imposing 3D silver-gray lupine creature, its fur quivering slightly.
Around it were twelve black-clothed individuals who swayed gently, among which ten shared identical character models. Only a man and a woman were distinctly different, clearly boss-level characters.
Their names were “Number Three” and “Number Eight,” respectively.
At the bottom of the grid map, two entry members materialized in the “first block.” One was the 3D version of “Nightsaber,” and the other was “Psychic Dancer.”
Their bodies swayed slightly in place, and every detail, from the gentle movement of their clothes to their weapon designs, was portrayed with exceptional precision.
Bai Yan paused momentarily, then remarked, “Well, this looks like a Fire Emblem copy.”
Though the game format was familiar, the mission itself was entirely unknown.
“Clatter, clatter,” the familiar sound appeared alongside subtitles.
“You really came!”
The profile picture in the bottom left corner showed a silver-grey werewolf with a gratified expression.
“Go block them.”
The profile picture visible in the lower right corner belonged to Number Three, a dark-haired woman with sewn-shut lips. Her face was fair and delicate, yet devoid of any trace of humanity.
The entire map consisted of 15 grids from top to bottom, but even the phone screen couldn’t display it completely, requiring scrolling to view the whole map.
Ten black-clothed individuals without distinctive 3D features observed the two young women.
The first round commenced.
Six men in black advanced while four others remained stationary.
Then came Bai Yan’s turn to control the Core Operator. He could direct the movements of “Nightsaber” and “Psychic Dancer,” activate their skills, and utilize relics.
Instead of rushing, Bai Yan examined the operational instructions and character statistics.
“Nightsaber” could traverse ten grids in a single round, reaching the werewolf butler in just two rounds, while “Psychic Dancer” could only move three grids per round at a slower pace.
Their health points differed by several magnitudes, and “Psychic Dancer’s” stats were consistently lower than those of the warrior-type “Nightsaber.”
However, regarding skills, “Psychic Dancer’s” techniques proved more practical.
While “Nightsaber” could only attack targets one grid ahead, “Psychic Dancer’s” Psychic Domination covered a three-by-three range, capable of manipulating two enemies simultaneously.
Taking advantage of the opportunity for a second attempt, Bai Yan explored the gameplay methodically. He directed “Nightsaber” and “Psychic Dancer” to advance toward the six black-clothed individuals.
“Nightsaber” employed “Cleave,” while “Psychic Dancer” utilized “Psychic Domination.”
Game tip: “When loved ones are threatened, ‘Nightsaber’ becomes furious. The first attack guarantees a critical hit and stuns the opponent.”
The critical strike indicators on her body illuminated as she raised her greatsword high before bringing it down. The tremendous force of the attack cleaved a black-clad person in two.
Psychic Dancer’s Psychic Domination turned two black-clothed individuals against each other.
She commanded the two controlled individuals to attack another black-clothed man.
The pair released a grey mist in unison, confusing their target before his health points diminished to zero.
The second round began.
The werewolf roared and charged toward the stone-wielding monster before him… Number Eight.
With a swift claw attack, he tore away a significant portion of Number Eight’s flesh, causing severe bleeding.
Number Eight swung his stone pestle calmly in counterattack but was deftly evaded by the werewolf.
Number Three, the black-haired woman, remained motionless.
The other four men in black also maintained their positions.
Among the six who had advanced, one had perished, two were under control, one was confused, and the remaining two launched attacks against ‘Nightsaber’ and ‘Psychic Dancer’ respectively.
They raised their hands in unison, releasing grey mist.
“Psychic Dancer nullified the ‘Smokey Haze’ attack.”
“Nightsaber sustained damage but resisted the ‘Smokey Haze’ spell’s bewitchment.”
Bai Yan’s turn arrived again.
He commanded Nightsaber to eliminate a full-health black-clothed man while directing Psychic Dancer to order her controlled men to dispatch the confused one.
“What comes next, I wonder?”
In truth, Bai Yan awaited the werewolf’s potential demise.
The third round commenced.
The werewolf initiated a fierce assault, wildly clawing and biting Number Eight. The BOSS’s health depleted entirely as he collapsed.
Bai Yan hesitated, realizing this seemed unusual. A BOSS in the Babel Tower shouldn’t fall so easily without putting up significant resistance.
He directed both “Nightsaber” and “Psychic Dancer,” along with the two controlled black-clothed men, to advance together.
The swift Nightsaber encountered resistance from the remaining four black-clothed men, leading to an intense clash.
Number Three vanished from her position and materialized beside “Nightsaber.” She seized her arm and hurled her away with tremendous force.
“Nightsaber” was thrown back to her starting position, losing half her health and falling into a daze!
“Teleportation, and such strength.”
Bai Yan observed the scene calmly, unsurprised yet mentally noting important details.
The fourth round began.
The fallen Number Eight unexpectedly rose, his already massive form doubling in size. The 3D model transformed from two people’s height to four within moments.
“How is this possible?”
The werewolf appeared utterly bewildered, unable to comprehend the phenomenon.
“Well, the Demon Hunt Agency’s agents approach. We shall withdraw… this appears to be the Babel Tower owner’s response.”
Number Three spoke again and instantly appeared behind the stunned werewolf.
Her fair arm pierced his chest, and the black-haired woman calmly extracted his crimson heart.
“No!”
The werewolf trembled briefly before collapsing.
Witnessing this, Nightsaber expressed inconsolable grief, falling to her knees, seemingly strengthless.
The black-clad individuals vanished one after another.
The camera slowly focused on “Nightsaber”… tears fell rarely from her eyes as her body shook.
Though they were merely 3D cartoon-style figures, Bai Yan found himself stunned.
He sensed an almost tangible sadness, yet facing this emotion stirred an undeniable resistance deep within his heart.
“Sudden mission failed.”
The large red text appeared, seeming to confirm the irreversible tragedy.
“Save game?” “Restart?”
The familiar options appeared once more.
Bai Yan collected himself, carefully considering everything that had transpired.
His gaze fixed on the grid rows as he calculated battle arrangements mentally.
“I understand now. We must prevent Number Three from slaying the werewolf after the third round!”
This was the checkpoint’s victory condition.
“Restart.”
Through several swift attempts, Bai Yan failed repeatedly but gained crucial insight into the enemies’ behavior patterns.
Finally, confidence surged within him!
“This attempt will succeed!”
Only two major obstacles remained.
First was the interference from the black-clothed mob, who would attack and impede “Nightsaber” and “Psychic Dancer’s” movements.
Second was Number Three, the black-haired woman, who could forcefully repel any enemies within six grids.
“We must engage Number Three in the third round to prevent her from killing the werewolf in the final round.”
“My apologies, but this task requires significant effort and sacrifice for completion.”
Bai Yan drew a deep breath, accepting that an unscathed victory was impossible this time.
Restart!
The enemy’s first-round movements matched their previous pattern.
Bai Yan commanded “Nightsaber” to use “Nyx’s cover,” leaving behind illusions to confuse the surrounding cloaked figures. Nightsaber then advanced to the eighth grid position without triggering Number Three’s attack.
Positioning proved crucial to the entire strategy!
They needed to engage the second wave of enemies, allowing “Psychic Dancer” an opportunity to control them while preventing ‘Nightsaber’ from being thrown back by the BOSS.
He then directed Psychic Dancer to control two enemies, guard her rear grid, and follow suit.
The second round unfolded.
Nightsaber, positioned at the eighth grid, found herself surrounded by the newly advanced black-clothed men who attacked from the tenth grid.
The wounded Nightsaber countered, slaying one attacker.
The two black-clad defenders fell quickly, while Psychic Dancer advanced to the seventh grid.
Psychic Domination!
The two black-clad individuals on the tenth grid fell under her control and were ordered to end themselves.
“Sacred Rune Athena!”
Psychic Dancer seized control of another black-clad man on the tenth grid.
Suicide!
The unobstructed “Nightsaber” rushed forward, reaching the black-haired woman’s side in one swift movement!
Bai Yan’s previous attempt had shown that direct attacks would be perfectly dodged, as the enemy’s strength, speed, and dexterity surpassed “Nightsaber’s.”
“Deep blue world,” attack!
The screen turned deep blue as “Nightsaber” gained an extra action.
She raised her broadsword once more and brought it down with devastating force.
Number Three crashed to the ground, dazed. A large hole torn in her chest leaked endless black, wailing shadows.
This woman was a transformed shadow demon!
As the third round concluded, “Nightsaber” finally reunited with the werewolf butler.
When the fourth round began, the stunned Shadow Demon Number Three remained immobile, while the massive Number Eight lay “dead” as before.
The subtitles appeared again.
“I knew you would come, miss.”
“And I knew I would save you.”
“Why?”
“Just as you believe in me, I believe in someone else… and he never disappoints us.”
