Chapter 486: Prologue
“Fifty times and he couldn’t get up? Is that all?”
Old Mike spread his hands, his expression one of disdain. The guy’s cybernetic transformation didn’t seem all that impressive. He’d passed out more than ten times and now he was unable to even stand.
And from the looks of it, he was on the brink of death.
Despite his power and physique, capable of contending with awakened beings, he was now reduced to this.
Old Mike furrowed his brow and muttered to himself, “I won’t even attempt the hundred-fold increase, for fear of killing myself. By the way, where’s that little one named Maryse? She should have been here by now.”
In fact, Maryse was playing a game.
She had promised Old Mike, “The Final Gun,” that she would help him, and now the time had come. Yet, she was still caught up in her game.
Sitting cross-legged in her new home—the Giant Hive—Maryse wore pink pajamas, a wide smile on her face, and virtual glasses perched on her head.
She was engrossed in a two-player game with her maid, Irena, who also wore a pair of virtual glasses, her expression calm and collected.
“Wow, amazing!”
Maryse’s eyes widened in surprise as Irena, with her exceptional gaming skills, turned the tide. After Maryse had been killed in the game, Irena single-handedly fought the boss—who had only half health left—into the second phase and emerged victorious despite the relentless attacks.
She was truly amazed!
“Hello, Irena, you’re so strong! How is this possible? When we used to play before, I never saw you do anything like this! You’re so cool! I even want to watch the video again!”
Irena muttered, her eyes flickering with uncertainty, “Maybe I’m just good at the Ring City game mode…”
“Wow! So that’s how it is, I can read your thoughts!”
Maryse paused, realizing the truth. Irena had downloaded a game cheat from the Babel Tower forum, allowing her character to move automatically while she played!
The Babel Tower forum, which was meant to help members, actually had people uploading cheats to the database?
“Hmph, I’m angry now. I won’t play with you anymore.”
Maryse removed her glasses, too frustrated to continue playing with Irena, who had cheated.
“If you don’t want to play, forget it. I’ll play alone,” Irena said, uninterested.
Irena opened the window and stepped outside. The view was an endless expanse of azure sea.
Of course, it wasn’t the sea—it was just a very large lake.
When Maryse learned that the Savior needed her to use her psychic powers to stabilize the Giant Hive, she made a “spoiled” request: to live in a room all by herself, decorated to her liking.
Thus, she was given a previously unused nest room. Using fairy tale magic, she filled it with seawater and built an open-air villa in the center of the lake, perfectly matching her aesthetic preferences.
She lived there with Irena, while her family and Irena’s family were placed in separate nest rooms.
“Ah, if only he could move here and live with us…”
With the sea breeze brushing her face, she put on her glasses again and accessed the Babel Tower forum, curious about what was being discussed on the lower levels.
Though the lower-level members couldn’t access the upper-level discussions, the higher-tier members could freely observe the activities of the lower tiers.
Maryse entered the cyber world, where she found herself in a space made entirely of blue data.
Soon, she arrived in a marvelous virtual reality realm.
Two virtual animals appeared out of thin air and began talking to each other, unaware of Maryse floating above them, observing their conversation.
Kuayi, a female member of the Scarlet Blood Clan, asked, “Is it true and without error regarding the spell you obtained?”
Huai, a male sinner from Annottales, replied, “Yes, I traded it from an Omnic. The Omnic was strange; it only wanted a handful of soil I brought from outside.”
Maryse glanced at them briefly and realized that Kuayi was an “Origin” level extraordinary. Nothing special about her. The same went for Huai.
Kuayi said, “Since this is indeed the spell for understanding languages, I’ll give you two hundred and fifty thousand.”
Maryse thought for a moment. Spells for language comprehension weren’t rare, at least not for her. But for the lower-tier extraordinaries, new spells, rituals, and relics were precious.
Huai nodded, “We just arrived at the Giant Hive and really need the money. By the way, you guys just moved here too, right? Where did you live before?”
Kuayi replied, “We lived in a city called Tatsumi. It’s a long story…”
The two of them began chatting. Kuayi, over a hundred years old and highly emotionally intelligent, did not mention that Huai was a sinner. Despite their differences, there was no discrimination.
Maryse knew that the Babel Tower’s rules ensured all members were treated equally, a principle enforced by the Savior. Those who violated it faced consequences.
She also knew that Amy and Aurora were particularly passionate about enforcing these rules, especially Amy.
Just then, Maryse furrowed her brow.
“Hmm, it seems like I forgot something…”
Uh-oh.
“I remembered!”
Her face changed as she realized what she had forgotten. Old Mike had asked her to do something, and she’d completely forgotten about it!
“Ah, what should I do? Truly, it’s just like me…”
“Maryse, are you still here?”
At that moment, Amy’s virtual image appeared in the cyber world, gazing at Maryse. “Old Mike has been waiting for you at the agreed place. But I checked, and you’ve been playing games this whole time instead of helping him. Maryse, this isn’t right. He asked me to call you.”
“I was wrong! I’ll be there soon, really. I just need to change my clothes!”
Maryse began to wail.
When Maryse finally arrived, Old Mike wore a displeased expression as he stared at the half-elf girl in a white shirt before him.
“Little one, you’re really late.”
“Sorry, I was just sent out on a mission by the Savior,” Maryse explained, a sudden spark of realization hitting her. She grinned mischievously, “Actually, just ten minutes ago, I used my psychic powers to slaughter hundreds of thousands in a primitive civilization, destroyed an entire country… and now I have to come back and clean up your mess. You should be more grateful.”
She sighed dramatically, pretending to be solemn. “Some of them were crying and begging for mercy, but they didn’t understand that I’ve always been cold-hearted.”
“Is that so?” Old Mike chuckled, his tone neutral.
“Why would you use psychic powers to kill people? Shouldn’t those being controlled still have the chance to beg for mercy?”
“Of course, you’d believe it,” Maryse smirked, sensing that Old Mike didn’t believe her.
A brief thought crossed her mind—she almost used her mind-reading powers to plant a suggestion, but she hesitated. She remembered Mr. Profligate’s advice to never do such things to companions.
Old Mike remained expressionless as he continued, “I don’t care about your previous actions. Whether you’ve been playing games or doing something else, you need to help me uncover all the secrets of this scoundrel.”
His voice, now filled with anger, echoed in the room. “I need to know! Why have my family and I become targets?”
“Who would be licking anything? You’re disgusting!”
Maryse furrowed her brow, blushing, as she glanced at the unconscious Alloy Wolf.
The Alloy Wolf, having been stirred awake, gazed around in confusion.
Maryse understood instantly. Before her stood a low-level superhuman with absolutely no secrets to reveal.
“How could these things…?”
She furrowed her brow and took a deep breath. “I think Mr. Profligate should know about this. Maybe Amy should know too.”
“What’s wrong?” Old Mike’s face became serious.
After a brief pause, Maryse replied, “It’s about something concerning the Rock Morgan group…”
“And it’s related to the ‘Crimson Sovereign’…”
Old Mike’s hand trembled slightly before transforming into a black gun. He shot the now useless Alloy Wolf in the head.
“Bang!”
Blood splattered, but Maryse managed to dodge it.
Old Mike took a deep breath, his expression one of disbelief.
To his shock, the Alloy Wolf was one of the Rainbows.
