Chapter 418: Summer
The powerful Blank Fire’s mystical energy paralyzed everyone, rendering them motionless.
Even Mr. World remained calm, gazing at the flickering white flame without a reaction, despite witnessing his comrades’ deaths. As the strongest member of the Air Alliance, he was unaffected.
Mu Ling was filled with worry but was uncertain how to respond.
She had intended to activate Deep Blue World and strike Blank Fire head-on. But just as she was about to act, a strong, dangerous warning echoed in her mind.
We can’t do that! Approaching it would mean certain death!
At first, only Mu Ling was aware of the danger, having been awakened by Bai Yan. But soon, Alan and Maryse also stirred.
“Close your eyes and don’t look directly at Blank Fire!” Mu Ling immediately shouted.
In the dream world, “closing your eyes” wasn’t literal; it symbolized their resistance to Blank Fire’s overwhelming power. It was a small act but one that proved effective.
What should they do?
All three obeyed, closing their eyes, avoiding direct confrontation with the mysterious force in the sky.
We can’t try to destroy it. If we get close, it will be our end.
Recluse’s soul dissolved quickly into Blank Fire, and within an instant, he was gone—transformed into an unnamed fuel that strengthened the flame.
The fire grew.
If this continued, everyone would become mere “fuel.”
“We need to retreat now, and find a way to leave!” Maryse suggested urgently. “Blank Fire’s attraction might have a sequence. The old man who stood at the front was the first to be consumed.”
Mu Ling and Alan understood—Recluse, being closest to Blank Fire, was the first to be absorbed.
Although only one person had been taken by Blank Fire, it was too soon to discern a pattern, but Maryse’s theory held some merit.
“Wait, what are they doing?” Mu Ling asked quickly.
Maryse, on the verge of speaking, hesitated. “Let’s focus on ourselves first, then worry about the others… Mu Ling, we are both weapons of the Savior. This life is not ours alone to give up. We can’t sacrifice it without reason.”
Mu Ling hesitated, moved by Maryse’s words. After all, she didn’t know the Imperial Guards well. Saving lives when possible made sense, but sacrificing Maryse and Alan, a member of Babel Tower… Mu Ling sighed.
“No,” Alan interjected firmly, shaking his head. “Mr. Kessel, the ’emperor’ of the Imperial Guards, is still in Mrs. Tower. If she dies, he will die too… Mr. Kessel has been kind to me and Bai Yan. I can’t just leave. You all go!”
Bai Yan?
Mu Ling and Maryse were startled, recognizing the name from somewhere, though they couldn’t place it.
Strange.
Maryse stayed silent for a moment, then suddenly grabbed Mu Ling’s hand. “Let’s step back.”
She and Alan weren’t close; they weren’t even friends. But now, their own lives—and Mu Ling’s—were paramount. They had to prevent Mr. Profligate from approaching!
“No,” Mu Ling insisted, shaking her head resolutely. “Alan is our companion. I cannot abandon him!”
Maryse, frustrated, couldn’t contain her annoyance. To her, companions were just colleagues, brought together by the Savior from all walks of life.
“The second victim has appeared!” Alan shouted suddenly.
The second victim was Miss “Justice,” the pure-blooded high elf. Her expression went blank, and her spirit began to lift toward Blank Fire in the sky.
Maryse, her psychic powers sensing the shift, fell into silence. She hadn’t known Miss “Justice” for long, but she had liked her. Yet, it wasn’t enough to sacrifice her life for someone else.
Alan desperately tried to intervene, using every spell he could muster to stop “Justice” from being drawn in, but to no avail.
“Damn it!” Alan cursed. “Facing a god’s power, am I powerless?”
Out of nowhere, a hand appeared, gently grasping Justice’s arm and pulling her back from the fatal attraction.
Everyone was stunned—Mr. World, the most powerful among them, had intervened!
With a casual movement, he pulled Justice’s spirit back from the edge of oblivion. But just as he did, the attraction increased!
Justice floated in mid-air, dazed, not fully sucked in. Mr. World couldn’t pull her back completely either.
“Do I have to absorb someone?” he murmured calmly to himself.
Without hesitation, Mr. World swapped places with Justice, throwing her back.
And as he did, Mr. World was slowly drawn toward Blank Fire.
“As long as we can break free from control, we can use the dream-jumping method to escape into another dream,” Mr. World continued slowly. “You should leave first.”
He turned to Shi Nianyu, standing beside him, mesmerized by the fire. “Shi Nianyu is still here. I cannot leave.”
At that moment, Alan realized: the strongest person in the Air Alliance was not the monster everyone feared, but a very human being.
“Mr. World, can you… tell us your name?” Alan asked hesitantly.
Mr. World remained silent for a while before nodding gently.
“My name is… Xia.”
And with that, a faint black aura enveloped him.
Mu Ling felt a surge of danger. She instinctively backed away from Mr. Xia. Something unimaginable was about to happen.
“What exactly is this power?” Maryse asked, not even trying to hide her fear. She grabbed Mu Ling’s hand and shouted to Alan, “What are you waiting for? Use your magic to get everyone out!”
Just as things reached a boiling point, another figure appeared by their side.
Maryse’s anxious expression shifted to one of joy—only to twist into fear and unease as she realized who it was.
“What are you doing here?”
It was Profligate, standing closest to Blank Fire!
“Don’t go near it!” Maryse shouted, rushing forward, but unable to stop him.
Bai Yan, however, was calm. He had already decrypted the Blank Fire’s nature using the “Connection” and the “game.” He understood that Blank Fire could only devour souls weaker than itself.
Blank Fire, after all, was just one of the powers of the Steel Throne, not an actual god. It wasn’t an enemy they couldn’t defeat.
Bai Yan knew his soul wasn’t weaker than the Steel Throne’s. After all, the Scarlet Moon, the Queen who drew power from his soul, wielded true divinity.
The Scourge of War · Moonlight Polarization.
Bai Yan reached out, drawing moonlight from the air, shaping it into a sword capable of cutting through anything.
With a swift motion, the moonlight shot through the vast sky, heading straight toward Blank Fire.
The fire froze, motionless.
Then, with a decisive slash, it was cut in half.
“Ah! Did it work?” Maryse shouted, her voice filled with hope.
“Not yet,” Mr. Xia said calmly, his gaze fixed on Bai Yan.
From the shattered Blank Fire, a deep voice boomed, reverberating through everyone’s hearts.
[Who are you?]
The voice echoed like thunder, and except for Bai Yan, no one could resist the urge to kneel and worship.
Shi Nianyu and Miss Justice, still in a trance, knelt down repeatedly.
But Bai Yan remained unfazed.
[I am Profligate, from the Babel Tower.]
Crimson blood gathered in his hand as he swung the pristine moonlight toward the divided Blank Fire once more.
The white flames surged toward him but could not consume his soul. Instead, they absorbed his immense spiritual energy.
Ordinary beings at the Crown level would have been drained instantly. But Bai Yan’s spiritual power remained untouched.
His power was infinite!
Mr. Xia, Mu Ling, Maryse, and Alan watched in awe as Blank Fire’s terrifying power had no effect on Bai Yan.
[“This soul… is so special… so strange… full of mystery…”]
[“What exactly are you?”]
The voice of the Steel Throne grew more aware of the differences in Bai Yan’s soul. Through Blank Fire, it could sense the uniqueness of his power.
Under the brilliance of Moonlight Polarization, the flames began to distort, shrinking bit by bit until they were nothing more than a wisp.
No matter how terrifying, Blank Fire was still only a manifestation of the Steel Throne’s power, not an actual deity.
And so, the threat of Blank Fire dissipated.
[This is not the end, I will return… When I do, it will be your ultimate demise!]
The Steel Throne’s voice was filled with rage, shaking the very heavens.
His words lingered long after, echoing in the white world.
But everyone who still remained conscious breathed a sigh of relief.
Finally, it was over.
And as the dream world began to collapse, Bai Yan awoke, sitting on the throne within the Babel Tower.
The first thing he did was check his phone to see the rewards from completing the mission.
At the same time, Bai Yan opened his palm, revealing a small white flame—a trace of divinity.
He had it.
This was the wreckage of Blank Fire.
