Chapter 400: The Things You Want to Do
At this very moment, inside the home of the false “Hain,” Bai Yan and Mu Ling remained hidden, carefully observing the Doomsday Race emerging from the darkness.
The Doomsday Race members, one by one, took out their “Black Remnant” talismans from their pockets. They then retrieved a wriggling “Skeuomorphism” from within.
“A very convenient prop… almost like something akin to a storage ring,” Bai Yan murmured to himself.
The Doomsday Race allowed the black “Skeuomorphism” slime to cover their bodies, gradually transforming their appearances—both facially and physically.
What once were beings with blue skin and tall, slender physiques slowly changed into humans with normal body sizes and skin tones.
“They want to blend into Tatsumi City…” Bai Yan whispered to Mu Ling.
The air was once again filled with the sweet fragrance of lilacs, gently entering their nostrils.
Mu Ling nodded thoughtfully and said, “It seems they have such a plan. This behavior isn’t uncommon among cultists. Perhaps they’re preparing for some terrible conspiracy…”
As Mu Ling spoke, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. In the few hours she had spent with Mr. Profligate, something about him always felt strangely familiar.
It was mainly his eyes.
Where had she seen that gaze before?
She puzzled over it in her mind, but no answer seemed to come.
Bai Yan’s voice cut through her thoughts, slow and deliberate. “Let’s leave the Doomsday Race for now and see what they really intend to do… We still have two days left for our investigation. In a way, we have plenty of time.”
“Hmmm,” Mu Ling responded quietly, without objection.
Ding dong!
The doorbell suddenly rang, shattering the tense silence.
The Doomsday Race members inside the house, in the middle of disguising themselves, were startled by the unexpected sound of the doorbell. After exchanging words in an ancient, mysterious language, they immediately sent two of their own to the entrance.
The two Doomsday Race members each wielded black blades, signaling their intention to deal with whoever was outside.
“It’s Hain’s neighbor!” Mu Ling’s expression shifted as she frowned. “An old lady holding eggs… it seems like she’s come to deliver some to Hain. Her neighbor used to do the same.”
“What should we do?” she asked urgently. “If we ignore her, that old lady will be in trouble.”
Bai Yan, standing by, gave a soft smile. “Of course, we’ll do as you think.”
Mu Ling’s worry was met with his reassurance. “Don’t worry. We have other ways to uncover the truth… I know, Nightsaber, you won’t tolerate the innocent being harmed.”
“Thank you, Senior Profligate,” Mu Ling said gratefully, stepping forward. The intense murderous intent emanating from her immediately caused the concealment to fail.
She appeared in the room like a vengeful goddess of the night, radiating a fierce and untouchable aura.
“Hmm?”
One of the Doomsday Race members saw Mu Ling and instinctively moved to scream, but before he could, his head was severed in an instant.
The others, seeing their comrade fall, immediately reached for their weapons and rushed to attack.
This all unfolded in the blink of an eye.
Mu Ling’s expression remained incredibly calm, her face impassive.
In Bai Yan’s eyes, only a fraction of a second passed, but after that moment, the entire world fell still.
Five seconds—enough time for Mu Ling, whose speed was unparalleled, to complete a multitude of tasks.
Unfortunately, the power she had now was only a fraction of the King of Deep Blue’s power. In legend, the true “King of Deep Blue” had the ability to freeze time itself, rendering the universe motionless for eternity.
“It’s all resolved,” Mu Ling said, looking back at Bai Yan. Her voice was calm, as if what she had done was a mere trifle.
Bai Yan nodded, then shook his head with a smile. “There’s still one important task left undone.”
“What important matter?” Mu Ling asked, confused.
Bai Yan wore a gentle smile as he reached for the door and looked outside.
An elderly woman, her hair completely white, was smiling back at him from the doorway.
“Grandma Qian, what brings you here again?” Bai Yan feigned surprise.
Grandma Qian smiled warmly. “Hain, didn’t you say the eggs you bought online weren’t tasty? Well, guess what? The chickens from my hometown in Tatsumi City have started laying eggs, so I brought some fresh ones for you.”
Mu Ling froze for a moment, then quickly realized what had happened. “Mr. Profligate just used magic,” she thought, astonished.
From Grandma Qian’s perspective, Bai Yan appeared as the female Night Watcher of this household, Hain.
Meanwhile, the real Hain lay unconscious on the floor, her fate hanging in the balance. She had been overtaken by Skeuomorphism for several days and had no awareness of what was happening around her.
Bai Yan greeted Grandma Qian with a broad smile. “Thank you so much, Grandma Qian! Please, come in and have a seat.”
Mu Ling couldn’t help but feel a rising tide of confusion.
Inside the house, the floor was drenched in blood, with lifeless corpses scattered about. The gruesome scene was impossible to ignore.
“Okay, okay.”
However, once Grandma Qian entered, she seemed completely oblivious to the mess. She cheerfully interacted with Bai Yan as if nothing was amiss.
So this is the effect of magic? Mu Ling wondered silently.
In truth, it was the interference of the soul’s power.
Bai Yan had skillfully used his abilities to mask the grisly scene. As for his method… well, Xiao Nai Gou was certainly proving to be useful.
After coaxing Grandma Qian away, Bai Yan turned to Mu Ling, still holding a bag of eggs in his hands.
“Eat?” he asked with a raised eyebrow.
“…”
Mu Ling was speechless for a moment, then muttered, “Maybe we should clean up this place first.”
“Well, that’s true,” Bai Yan nodded.
The two of them set to work cleaning up the room, and once the mess was sorted, they sat down to rest.
Mu Ling carefully placed Hain’s unconscious body onto the sofa, leaving her where she would remain undisturbed.
Since the body belonged to Hain herself, Mu Ling had chosen not to kill her. Likewise, even Huang Feng, whom Bai Yan had previously controlled, was not killed outright.
These individuals might still have a chance to be saved. Physically, they appeared mostly unharmed.
“Please wait a moment,” Bai Yan smiled, walking towards the kitchen.
Soon, he returned with two plates of omelette rice, placing them in front of Mu Ling.
She blinked, frozen in surprise.
On her plate, the pancake and tomato sauce had been carefully arranged into the shape of a cat, which elicited a strange feeling inside her.
Standing before her, Bai Yan seemed oddly familiar, as if she had seen him before.
“How do you know what I love to eat?” she asked, her voice laced with bewilderment.
“Secret,” Bai Yan replied with a playful smile.
“…”
Despite her confusion, Mu Ling didn’t press the matter. Quietly, she began eating her meal.
Meanwhile, Bai Yan was enjoying his own serving of Cat Cat Rice Omelette.
Sure enough, he thought, I still don’t like eating sweet things.
After finishing their meal, Bai Yan took the “Black Remnant” amulet from his pocket and spoke calmly. “During the time just now, I’ve figured out how to use it.”
“There’s a saying: ‘Without entering the tiger’s den, how can one catch the tiger’s cub?’ Perhaps, going straight to the enemy’s lair will bring us closer to the truth.”
“Next, let’s journey together to the depths.”
