Chapter 397: The Hero Saves the Beauty
Ai.
“Could it really be her?”
Alan had only recently joined the Sword-wielding Troop, but he had already formed a strong impression of Captain The Cursed String Music’s secretary, Ai.
She had always strongly resisted him as an outsider, often causing trouble. While these were just trivial annoyances, they sometimes gave Alan headaches.
Every time Ai criticized him, she would comment on how he lacked the class to be part of the Sword-wielding Troop. She would often dwell on his past, lacking the determination to move on.
In reality, this had to do with Alan’s hidden abilities. The Babel Tower had bestowed tremendous power upon him, though he had hardly ever revealed it. No one knew about the incredible potential of the Pupil of Mystery.
Despite this, Alan had reached Crown level strength, a fact that couldn’t be concealed. Ai still disliked him and would often pick on him, which left Alan feeling somewhat gloomy, wondering why he no longer met her expectations.
But in that very moment, Alan’s first thought was to find her and ensure her safety.
The reasons were simple. First, Ai was a member of the Sword-wielding Troop. Alan had only been part of the troop for less than a month, yet after losing so many comrades, he had made a firm vow to never let another comrade die helplessly again.
Second, Ai might possess important information, and her survival was crucial for the Babel Tower.
“Hmm… Should I tell The Cursed String Music about this?” Alan thought for a moment.
His immediate superior was Captain The Cursed String Music, that young boy. Should he communicate with him before heading to find Ai?
However, Alan had a nagging feeling that informing The Cursed String Music about the situation might lead to unfavorable consequences. The Leaf King’s people were the ones behind this matter, and they hadn’t allowed the Demon Hunt General Agency to investigate.
Moreover, Ai had once mentioned that “The Sword Saint” belonged to the Leaf King faction, while The Cursed String Music despised the Leaf King. Alan speculated that there were things the Leaf King wanted to keep hidden from The Cursed String Music.
If Alan brought this to The Cursed String Music’s attention, it could affect the relationship between the Leaf King and the Babel Tower.
If it was just Alan, there would be no issue, but as a subordinate of the Savior, he had to be responsible for Babel Tower. Babel Tower had accepted a secret task from the Leaf King, and bringing it to The Cursed String Music would surely lead to problems.
Although there was no direct evidence to support these thoughts, intuition itself is often trustworthy for extraordinary beings… After all, inspiration is simply an extension of intuition.
Having made up his mind, Alan rose and set off to search for Ai.
But soon, he discovered that Ai was not inside the White Tower at the moment.
“Is she not here?”
Alan blinked and turned to ask a female colleague he usually got along with about Ai’s whereabouts.
“Excuse me, where is Miss Ai right now? I need to speak with her.”
“Ah? Weren’t the two of you usually at odds? Why would you suddenly want to seek her out?” the colleague asked, puzzled. “From what I remember, you usually avoid her whenever possible.”
“Um, there’s something important,” Alan replied vaguely.
“What’s so important?” the female colleague teased. “Could it be you actually like her type? Want to pursue her, huh?”
Alan was stunned, eyes wide open. “How did you even come up with that? What an imagination! I’m not some masochist…”
“Alright, alright, no more jokes,” the female colleague said, sensing Alan wasn’t amused. “From what I know, Ai was sent to investigate a small town that suddenly appeared outside Tatsumi City a few days ago.”
“A small town that appeared suddenly?”
Alan paused, realizing what she meant. Wasn’t it the town where Ganis and his followers, the sinners, were living?
The town’s inhabitants weren’t weak. The sinners, originating from the abattoir, were strong. However, Ai, being an elite member of the Sword-wielding Troop, was formidable at the Crown level. Investigating the situation would pose no real challenge for her.
What Alan didn’t know was that there was a powerful “Son of God” in the town.
“Thank you for the information!” Alan said quickly before hurrying off.
The Wilderness Outside Tatsumi City
Once a barren desert, the wilderness had transformed due to the miraculous powers of the “Son of God.” The sudden appearance of a small town had drawn the attention of Tatsumi City.
The Demon Hunt General Agency had sent members of the Sword-wielding Troop to investigate, including Ai.
Dressed in a black suit, Ai stood calmly within the town, her usual cold and arrogant expression in place. While in stealth mode, she surveyed her surroundings, as though unnoticed.
“Hmm, a town of sinners… Where did these sinners come from? A tribe, perhaps?”
Ai reported the situation through her earpiece.
“They don’t seem to fit in here. They’re settling into new homes, which is strange.”
If sinners were to enter an Air Alliance city without permission, the Night Watchers would have every right to take them down. However, if they merely stayed outside, they wouldn’t be touched.
This didn’t violate any laws of the Air Alliance. The Night Watcher wasn’t a murderer, after all.
“It’s strange,” Ai muttered, “They built a city so quickly. Ordinary people couldn’t do this. They must have used extraordinary powers.”
Her mission was to uncover why the town had been constructed overnight.
At that moment, Ai didn’t notice a black fingerprint forming quietly on the back of her neck.
Suddenly, the black finger began to move, slowly “popping” out a black talisman.
If Bai Yan were there, he would instantly recognize it as “Black Remnant.”
After a few seconds, thick black liquid began to ooze from the Black Remnant, crawling out like creeping darkness. It seemed to be targeting Ai, slowly climbing up her foot.
However, Ai remained oblivious to it. She couldn’t see the eerie black slime slowly enveloping her.
The entire scene looked chilling.
“Look out! Ai, be careful, look around!”
Alan appeared several meters away, shouting urgently.
Ai hesitated, but she still couldn’t see the “Skeuomorphism.”
“Alan? What are you doing here?” she asked, surprised.
“Skeuomorphism,” Alan responded calmly, having recognized it.
He had learned about “Profligate,” “Skeuomorphism,” “Black Remnant,” “Doomsday Race,” and “Black Abyss Deep Sea” through information shared on the forum.
Using his extraordinary senses, Alan had spotted the black fingerprints on Ai’s neck. Without a doubt, it was a curse.
The curse was likely why Ai couldn’t see the “Skeuomorphism.”
Alan calmly extended his finger, and a jet of black Fire that Burns Everything shot out, hitting the “Skeuomorphism” engulfing Ai’s body.
The terrifying entity let out a piercing scream, which was heard by many sinners nearby, scaring them.
The “Flame Dart” technique, invented by Alan during his training at the Babel Tower, was now proving useful. Though it was a simple combination of magic and fire, it worked surprisingly well.
As Ai felt the black flames engulfing her and heard the creature’s screams, she finally became aware of something on her.
“What is happening?” she asked in confusion.
“Skeuomorphism,” Alan explained. The power of the Fire that Burns Everything was pushing the entity towards destruction.
Ai remained silent, but Alan could see she knew more than she was letting on.
Compared to the other three Night Watchers who had been “possessed,” Ai was of a much higher level. As the deputy captain of the Sword-wielding Troop, she was second only to The Cursed String Music and the director.
How could she be just an ordinary pawn in this situation?
“Um, why don’t you tell me what’s going on?”
Suddenly, a tall man, standing at two meters, appeared between them. His beauty surpassed that of humans, and both Ai and Alan found themselves momentarily enchanted.
“The Son of God,” Amicio, smiled and spoke slowly.
“Hmm, luck seems to be on my side… Something interesting has happened here.”
