Chapter 394: “You Understand the Savior Better Than I Do”
The villa estate was vast, once able to house hundreds of people, but now it had aged and fallen into disrepair.
The ancient tree in the courtyard, towering and grand, had reached the end of its life. The once-proud hunting grounds of the Mu family now lay in ruin, no longer reflecting the vibrancy of its past.
Dressed in a black robe, Bai Yan stood before the gate of the Mu family, embodying the essence of a “Profligate.”
He gazed upon the desolation, contemplating many things.
“This is Mu Ling’s home…” Bai Yan mused, a thought crossing his mind, “Now that I think about it, it seems like my first time visiting.”
Although Bai Yan was already very familiar with Mu Ling, his last visit had been brief.
The last time he came, it was because Mu Ling had recently joined Babel Tower, and Scarlet Moon, filled with anger, had wanted to kill her. But under the power of Power Possession, Scarlet Moon was forced to relent, unable to do anything else.
Bai Yan had stayed for no more than three minutes that time.
In truth, Bai Yan had known Mu Ling for a long time, even though their interactions had been limited. He often observed her from afar, without her knowledge.
The “Savior” Mu Ling admired was, in fact, herself. She was the only Core Operator in Babel Tower who knew her true identity.
Though her true identity had been temporarily concealed through a trick—”The Savior can incarnate into anyone”—Mu Ling was undoubtedly special.
She was the starting point of Bai Yan’s own salvation game and would remain by his side until the very end.
“Hello.”
The gates creaked open, revealing Butler Huo Xin, a werewolf who had escaped from the Kingdom of Dark Light, now part of the Eruo League.
He glanced at Bai Yan, politely introducing himself.
“I am the butler of the Mu family, Huo Xin. May I ask who you are and what brings you to the Mu family?”
Bai Yan smiled warmly and replied, “Hello, Butler Huo Xin. Please tell the head of the Mu family that Profligate has come to visit. If he hears, he will surely allow me to enter.”
“Profligate?”
Huo Xin looked surprised, but then quickly bowed with excitement. “So, you are the elder from Babel Tower! Our master has always been grateful for your care.”
The infamous Profligate may not have been known in Tatsumi City, but in the Otherworlds, Profligate was renowned. Mysterious and immensely powerful, he was a legendary figure.
As the Mu family’s butler, Huo Xin had heard many tales of the Profligate. In his heart, Profligate was no ordinary individual but a legendary powerhouse who traversed worlds.
As an elder of Babel Tower, he had served as the Savior’s ace fighter, using projections and clones in Noah’s world. The true extent of his power was unfathomable.
Recognizing Bai Yan’s identity, Huo Xin bowed deeply, showing profound respect.
This reaction was expected. Bai Yan simply smiled and shook his head gently.
“It’s nothing… Mu Ling’s determination and strength of heart are the key factors that have allowed her to reach this point, growing stronger with every step.”
Bai Yan was used to being regarded with respect. It was a feeling he experienced every day.
Upon hearing Bai Yan’s words, Huo Xin realized that the Profligate was a person of great emotional intelligence. Despite his surprise, Huo Xin couldn’t help but feel a surge of happiness.
Ah, Mu Ling… She was the last hope of the Mu family, the child he had watched grow from a young age. To him, Mu Ling was everything.
So when Bai Yan spoke highly of her, even if it was just polite words, Huo Xin’s joy was overwhelming.
“You are too kind,” he said, bowing once more. “I’m sorry for keeping you outside. Please, come in.”
Without further delay, Huo Xin led Bai Yan into the mansion and escorted him to the parlor.
Inside, the dim lighting and heavy furniture created an oppressive atmosphere. It was clear that the villa had lost its former vibrancy.
Yet, despite the decay, Bai Yan felt no discomfort.
He had observed Mu Ling’s life within these walls countless times through the Babel Tower game and was well aware of the situation in the Mu family. This place, though seemingly gloomy, filled him with a deep sense of familiarity and calm.
“I will go seek permission from the head of the family. She will come out to greet you shortly.”
Huo Xin bowed and turned to leave, but before doing so, he paused and said with a hint of guilt, “I apologize, Mr. Profligate… Apart from myself and the head of the household, there are no other servants here, so you’ll have to wait alone for a little while. Tea and snacks will be brought to you shortly.”
“No worries,” Bai Yan nodded kindly, smiling in understanding. “Thank you for your kindness.”
Huo Xin bowed once more, then left the room.
Bai Yan sat quietly, waiting. Meanwhile, the true Bai Yan, inside Babel Tower, checked on Mu Ling’s current status.
“Hmm…”
At that moment, Mu Ling was relaxing in the bathhouse of her family’s residence, her eyes closed.
For her, only the bathhouse and the café were places of true comfort, where she could feel at ease.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Mu Ling heard the faint sound of knocking. Though the bathhouse and the entrance were far apart, she could still hear it clearly. It was a trait of extraordinary beings.
She had already known that Profligate had arrived. Yet, without opening the NightFall, she could not be sure of his identity.
“One moment, please.”
With a gentle movement, Mu Ling left the bath, dressed herself, and approached the door, where she saw Huo Xin.
Huo Xin promptly announced, “Mr. Profligate has come to visit!”
Mu Ling blinked in recognition and nodded.
“I understand.”
She quickly changed into a white formal outfit and entered the reception room, where she sat across from Bai Yan.
“Hello, Mr. Profligate. Thank you for always taking care of us,” Mu Ling greeted him politely.
When Mu Ling spoke of “us,” she referred to the core members of Babel Tower. In her eyes, they were all still “junior” and lacked experience.
To Mu Ling, the enigmatic Profligate, along with the Keeper of Secrets, were elder figures, mysterious and revered, trusted even more by the Savior.
The reverence she felt for them filled her heart with a certain envy.
“If it weren’t for your guidance, we wouldn’t have made it this far. We’d have perished in one crisis after another,” Mu Ling said, taking a deep breath.
She stood up and bowed deeply, grateful for Bai Yan’s help. Without him, she and the others would have perished long ago… perhaps even the world itself.
“Just a small effort,” Bai Yan replied with a smile. “As fellow Saviors, we do what we must for Babel Tower.”
Mu Ling furrowed her brow, slightly troubled by his words.
“Sorry, Senior Profligate… I believe we are more than just pawns. For the Savior, we are special.”
Bai Yan froze, surprised by her words.
These words had been spoken so casually, yet they carried a depth he hadn’t expected.
Mu Ling continued, lowering her gaze as she extended her hand. “Actually, the Savior and I have met several times in the real world… He possesses human emotions, but doesn’t show them in our meetings.”
“I think, just like many gods with personalities, the Savior has a human side. I still remember the kindness he showed me during the Crown Ceremony.”
Bai Yan was deep in thought.
Mu Ling had remembered the
kindness he had shown her
during a dark moment.
“Well, you’re right,” Bai Yan said
with a smile, avoiding an
argument.
If Mu Ling believed she
understood the Savior better
than he did, then he could only
agree, “Ah yes, yes, yes… You
understand the Savior better
than I do.”
Mu Ling, realizing she had
spoken too much, apologized.
“I’m sorry, I got carried away.
Of course, you understand the
Savior better than I do. It’s
just… for me, the Savior of
Babel Tower is like a torch in
the darkness. He holds
immense significance.”
“Would you give up everything
for the Savior?” Bai Yan asked
suddenly.
“Yes,” Mu Ling answered softly
but solemnly. “Even if it means
sacrificing my soul, I would
give myself up.”
She spoke with complete
honesty, no lies, no excuses.
In that moment, Bai Yan
understood why he had
increasingly wanted to save
the world, not just finish the
Babel Tower game.
It was because of the trust and
admiration others in Babel
Tower had in him. How could
he disappoint someone who
relied on him so deeply?
“Perhaps admiration is the
furthest distance from
understanding,” Bai Yan sighed
softly.
“What did you say?” Mu Ling
asked, confused.
“Nothing,” Bai Yan replied,
gazing into her eyes. “Perhaps,
one day, you will understand
the meaning of my words.”
“I brought you here to discuss
the matter of ‘possession.'”
Mu Ling nodded solemnly. It
would be her first mission with
the Profligate.
