Chapter 387: The Might of a Subservient Servant
The Ring City, a towering metropolis, was divided into semi-independent districts across its various levels. As one ascended higher, the districts boasted superior safety, healthcare, and education.
In the underground waterway on the 115th level, a group of Maintainers in protective masks moved steadily forward. Numerous search robots hovered around them, scanning for any potential clues.
At the forefront was Leon, the leader of this team. He was a seasoned member of the “Maintainer” division within the Rock Morgan group, an elite among the company’s agents. For over fifty years, he had fought, wielding his powerful, modified body to great effect.
This white-haired man was renowned as the most fearsome hound among the “Maintainers,” having completed countless challenges and defeated many “prey” stronger than himself.
“My extraordinary power of ‘super intuition’ will relentlessly track down you, thief who stole the company’s technology,” Leon muttered. “We will soon find you.”
Leon’s pursuit of Amy had begun after last year’s guide mission of the Cybertyrant, where she was manipulated by Bai Yan to steal a powerful piece of soul-related technology: the Phantom REC chip.
“That thing cannot be disclosed.”
The Phantom REC chip worked like a more potent form of hypnosis. However, it also possessed a terrifying vulnerability, a “backdoor” that made it particularly dangerous. On the surface, it appeared to be the latest entertainment software, designed to give users unlimited freedom in virtual reality. In truth, however, it subtly hypnotized users through this virtual realm, eventually plunging them into an irreversible trance.
This dangerous technology was stolen, and the Rock Morgan group demanded that the Maintainers hunt down the thief, no matter the cost.
After months of searching, Leon was getting closer and closer to Amy, who had been hiding across the city. He never imagined that Amy was now just a few hundred meters below him, in a hidden base situated between the 115th and 114th levels, built by the Omnic beings.
What Leon could not even fathom was that Amy, the thief, had become the creator of an entirely new race, rather than simply a hacker hiding in the sewers.
For this mission, Leon had come without the powerful weapons typically provided by the company, believing that his Maintainers would be sufficient for the task.
In fact, this assumption wasn’t entirely wrong. Most of the Maintainers had been modified and could easily overpower anyone below the Crown level, even without extraordinary strength. Only a handful of individuals at the Crown level existed, and defeating them required more advanced weaponry. As for those at the “Apocalypse” level—semi-gods capable of threatening entire nations—that was a different story altogether.
Even within the vast Ring City, only one individual of Apocalypse-level power was visible.
In reality, the Dark Light Church had four individuals at the Apocalypse level, which was considerable. The Air Alliance, on the other hand, also had just four.
“That guy is hiding here,” Leon muttered, eyes glowing red as he scanned his surroundings. “After months of investigation, it’s finally coming to an end.”
The Maintainers, scouring the underground water channels, stopped at yet another intersection. The team looked to Leon for guidance.
“Sometimes, I really feel that my skills are too extraordinary, too abnormal,” Leon remarked, gazing at his subordinates with a slight smile.
He continued, “Do you know? Ever since my ‘super intuition’ ability appeared, those so-called cyber detectives, online investigators, and advanced instruments have become almost irrelevant.”
“The things I can find, they can find too. The things I can track, they can track as well. But the difference? Time. The truth that takes a detective a month to uncover—where the culprit is—I can determine by flipping a coin.”
He smiled.
Time was precious, and in the Ring City, money was the only thing that truly mattered.
Leon reached into his pocket and pulled out an ancient coin.
“So, which way do we go? Left or right? Come on, tell me which path is better.”
With a casual flick, Leon tossed the coin into the air. It spun and twirled, its descent slow as he reached out to catch it. But just as he was about to seize the coin, a sharp pain shot through his arm, and in a blink, the coin fell to the ground.
“Hmm?”
The pain was fleeting, gone almost as soon as it had appeared.
“What’s going on…?”
His heart skipped a beat, and he glanced at the coin. It was neither face-up nor face-down. Instead, the coin had landed standing on its edge—a nearly impossible occurrence!
Suddenly, Leon felt a sharp ringing in his ears, his heart racing with an overwhelming sense of danger.
If I stay any longer, I will surely die!
“Hurry! Run!” Leon ordered.
He turned around, trying to retreat down the path they had come, but the danger remained. The feeling of impending doom hadn’t subsided.
“Damn it!” Leon cursed, halting in his tracks.
Where should they escape to? What should they do? Why was his intuition screaming that they were surrounded?
The Maintainers were startled by his frantic movements.
“Captain, which direction should we go? Where do we escape?”
But Leon didn’t know where to run. He looked at his subordinates and said, “We might have been surrounded.”
“But stay calm! Every move we make is being monitored by the company. They’ll send reinforcements soon enough!”
At that moment, Leon’s connection to the company was abruptly cut off.
“What’s going on?” he muttered in shock.
Then, his eyes fell upon a faint figure appearing in the sewer.
His enhanced vision allowed him to clearly see the figure—it was a slender young girl with blue eyes, slowly approaching them.
“Hmm?”
Leon’s heart pounded with the sense of real danger, and to his surprise, more and more identical figures emerged from all directions.
Each girl appeared to be in her early teens, with strikingly similar features. However, their distinct clothing, hairstyles, and eye colors set them apart, although they still shared an uncanny resemblance.
As the girls drew closer, the Maintainers grew tense, unsure whether to strike or hold back. They waited for Leon to issue orders.
“Who are you? What are you?” Leon demanded, his voice shaking as fear began to settle in.
Zero, standing amidst the identical girls, used her electronic abilities to issue a command.
[Kill them. No one leaves alive, but bring back the data and chips.]
With his extraordinary intuition, Leon instantly deduced that Zero was the leader. Without hesitation, he pulled out a large silver firearm and aimed it at her.
“Die!”
The weapon’s light shimmered, locking onto Zero. In theory, even if she tried to escape, it would be impossible.
But Zero simply stood still, watching the scene unfold.
“Lock it in, my friend. This is our battle with him,” she seemed to converse with the weapon, her eyes flashing with a red glow.
In the next instant, the shimmering light on the silver firearm disappeared.
Leon’s desperate struggle was in vain, as he felt the weight of impending defeat. His extraordinary intuition told him everything he needed to know: these seemingly frail girls were far more dangerous than he could have ever imagined.
Each of them possessed abilities equal to those at the awakening level—there were far more of them than he had realized!
Suddenly, it all clicked.
“I was wrong! I was wrong!” Leon exclaimed in disbelief. “They aren’t prey—they’re monsters!”
That’s right, they were monsters—terrifying, unstoppable creatures poised to destroy the entire Ring City.
Meanwhile, in a secret hideout, Amy sat quietly in her room, deep in thought while sitting in her wheelchair.
“Savior, is my choice truly the right one?”
She sighed, her powers sensing that her sisters had succeeded effortlessly.
“These strong children, after being touched by the blood of the wise life, no longer have any mental barriers. This could be the beginning of something… terrifying.”
Just then, Amy heard a familiar voice. It wasn’t an answer to her question, but instead…
[Cybertyrant, prepare yourself. It’s time for your Crown Ceremony.]
