Chapter 385: The Breakup of Friendship!
Tatsumi City.
Maryse’s room.
“Is this the first time I’ve invited you to my house?”
At that moment, three beautiful girls sat together on a bed. Maryse was lying down, dressed in a pink pajama set. Irena, the personal maid, wore a black-and-white maid outfit, her face beaming with a big smile.
And then there was Mu Ling, who had been invited by the two of them. As usual, Mu Ling wore a black outfit, with wine-red eyes and long white hair. Her presence was striking, impossible for anyone to ignore.
The idea of inviting Mu Ling to visit had actually come from Irena. She thought it was a normal gesture, given that they were good friends. It seemed only natural for them to visit each other’s homes and spend time together. However, both Mu Ling and Maryse had had unusual childhoods, and as such, rarely invited each other over. So, Irena encouraged Maryse to take the initiative.
Irena, like a caring mother, wanted to make the lives of these two girls—whose pasts had been unconventional—just a little bit easier.
Maryse was actually quite comfortable with the idea, but Mu Ling? She rarely let her guard down. Mu Ling had a habit of remaining tense. She worked tirelessly, completing various tasks for Babel Tower five days a week.
Often, she found herself in wild marshes, slaying nests of monsters, her body covered in mud. Then, in another city, she would battle cultists, returning home drenched in blood.
It was hard work, no doubt.
The reason for this was Bai Yan’s tendency to excessively use her. Though the tasks varied, they all boiled down to one thing: slaughter. She killed people, non-human beings, monsters, and all manner of incomprehensible creatures.
Just as Kaluoer had imagined, the organization that aimed to save the world often had to eliminate countless lives. The spirit of extraordinary beings could easily twist under such pressure. Continued, uninterrupted killing could drive them to madness.
Mu Ling, however, had never succumbed to such madness. Her strength of will and her powerful spiritual foundation kept her grounded. Extraordinary beings who gained power through faith found it hard to fall into madness unless something went wrong with their source of faith.
Irena walked barefoot off the bed, retrieving a delicate tray from the table. She brought over a variety of pastries and coffee, all carefully prepared in advance.
Maryse, noticing Mu Ling’s silence, took the initiative to pick up a macaron and handed it to her.
“Mu Ling, actually, I’ve always had a secret, just Irena and I know it. No one else does, you know?”
“Hmm?” Mu Ling responded, intrigued.
“Do you want to hear it?” Maryse asked, her tone lighter now.
Mu Ling took the macaron and took a bite, unable to resist. She adored sweets, so she continued to eat, enjoying each bite.
“Did you hear me talk?” Maryse asked, laughing and pinching Mu Ling’s face. The girl had eaten like a big hamster!
“Yes, I heard,” Mu Ling replied, still munching away, a half-hearted expression on her face as she chewed.
Maryse sighed but continued, a little more seriously now.
“Actually, I have this feeling… Maybe… I could like someone.”
“Oh, oh, oh!” Mu Ling kept eating, seemingly unfazed.
Maryse flushed, then continued. “More specifically… it’s more than just friends, but not quite lovers,” Irena suddenly added, a subtle smile on her face.
Maryse lowered her head, clearly embarrassed. “I’m not really sure what’s going on… It just feels like our relationship is very delicate. Mu Ling, do you think I should be more proactive?”
“But since I’m not sure if I like him, wouldn’t it be strange to be too forward?”
Maryse had simply wanted to talk, but she hadn’t expected Mu Ling’s expression to grow so serious.
“Have you considered what kind of standards you have when choosing a life partner?” Mu Ling asked, her tone sincere.
“Spouse? Isn’t that going too far?” Maryse was stunned. “We’re not even lovers yet!”
Mu Ling raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t dating for the purpose of marriage?”
Maryse paused. “Well, I guess so.”
For a moment, she was silent, trying to process Mu Ling’s words. They made sense but also felt strangely distant.
Mu Ling grabbed another piece of cake and asked again, “So, do you have any specific requirements for the person you want to marry?”
“Not really…” Maryse hesitated, then added, “As long as they treat me well and make me happy, I think that would be enough.”
She had never really thought much about it before. In the past, when her father was still alive, there had been no real possibility of love or marriage. Now, she felt uncertain, even confused.
“This is not acceptable,” Mu Ling said with a sigh. “Casual thoughts often lead to pain. For me, I’ll choose someone stronger than me, with a righteous mind, someone who’s a great hero.”
She continued, “And he must agree to my desire for many children… Oh, and most importantly, this man must not have any conflicts with Babel Tower.”
“Does the person you like meet these requirements?” Mu Ling asked, her tone serious.
Maryse stared blankly for a moment, then nodded. “Well… yeah, I guess.”
Mu Ling smiled, her tone becoming encouraging. “Then you definitely need to be more proactive. In today’s society, both men and women need to make their move. Courageously pursue him! Don’t let difficulties or obstacles hold you back. This kind of exceptional partner is rare, and you need to cherish it.”
Maryse took a deep breath.
Yes, she had thought about
this many times—she needed
to be more proactive. But still,
she couldn’t muster the
courage.
At twenty-eight years old, why
was she still so unsure? Wasn’t
this getting a little ridiculous?
“I understand!” Maryse finally
exclaimed, a new sense of
resolve lighting her face. “I’ll
catch up to him!”
Irena stood frozen, watching
the sudden shift in their
conversation.
Wait, weren’t they just talking
about being ‘more than friends,
but less than lovers’? How did
it suddenly escalate to Maryse
wanting to chase him?
It was all too much!
“Mu Ling, you’ll always be my
good friend,” Maryse couldn’t
help but hug Mu Ling, pressing
her head against the other
girl’s. She felt a surge of
emotion, grateful for Mu Ling’s
encouragement.
Mu Ling had just finished
eating, her hands oily. She
quickly lifted them, not
wanting to stain Maryse’s
clothes.
Irena promptly handed over a
tissue.
Then, Maryse heard something
—Mu Ling’s inner voice.
“Maryse, you will surely find
happiness.”
“Thank you…”
But just as she said those
words, everything froze. A
blurry “mosaic” appeared in
front of her. Instinctively, she
pulled her hands away from
Mu Ling.
Mu Ling’s clothes twisted, and
the same transformation
began happening to Maryse’s
own outfit!
What was going on? No!
Mu Ling looked at her new
attire with surprise but
remained calm. “It’s a new
possibility.”
Both girls watched as the
changes unfolded before
them. But what emerged left
them utterly stunned.
“What is this?” Maryse gasped,
almost fainting as her body
transformed into a pink and
white swimsuit dress.
She could accept a swimsuit,
but this… this was ridiculous! It
was far from what a grown
adult like her should wear!
And then, Mu Ling’s
transformation. Her bikini was
pure black, and… oh no! It was
completely inappropriate!
“Is this… a little too much?” Mu
Ling said, eyeing her own
attire.
“This is completely unsuitable
for battle,” Mu Ling remarked.
Maryse glanced at Mu Ling in
shock. “What have you done to
me?”
Mu Ling sighed. “It’s a new
possibility.”
And just like that, their
friendship—once so strong—
began to crack.
“Mu Ling,” Maryse murmured.
“I… I don’t know if I can deal
with this anymore.”
Friendship shattered.
