Chapter 367: The Malice of the Gods
Bai Yan knew, deep down, that there was something he didn’t need to worry about too much.
The people of Babel Tower, unless their personal relationships were fundamentally challenged, would not easily escalate conflicts. They weren’t the type to provoke unnecessary confrontations.
But the true reason behind their unity wasn’t just Bai Yan’s charm or management skills. That was impossible. The real driving forces were twofold.
First, Babel Tower provided everyone with tremendous, almost irresistible benefits. Initially, even those who weren’t remarkable had never imagined they could become legends themselves. But with Babel Tower’s blessing, it seemed that anyone could easily rise to legendary status.
Second, there was the looming Doomsday Crisis. Aside from Kaluoer and a few others, the core members of Babel Tower, though not afraid of death themselves, didn’t want to see their loved ones perish. That fear naturally motivated everyone to work together to save the world.
History had shown that huge rewards and the threat of death were often the foundation of loyalty and unity. If Babel Tower stopped offering its blessings and the Doomsday Crisis came to an end, this temporary group of “companions” could fall apart.
The main purpose of the Babel Tower gathering was to introduce three new Core Operators.
Among these three, Kaluoer had no extra thoughts. She remained motionless, as though she were a mere doll standing there. No one paid her any attention. To her, joining Babel Tower was like joining a mysterious organization, just another Mercury Ball. Nothing more.
She did whatever the “Savior” ordered without hesitation, regardless of who it involved killing. For her, it was simply a role—a “tool.”
She didn’t want to change. She didn’t see the other Core Operators as companions, instead, she carefully studied their weaknesses. In the Mercury Ball, assassins sometimes executed traitors. It was normal.
For Kaluoer, the world was divided into “tools,” “masters,” “missions,” and “goals.” Simple. Emotions, to her, were tiring. They prevented peace. If she thought too much, she would only feel weary.
Old Mike, on the other hand, resembled a startled old cat. Arms crossed, sitting in the corner, eyeing anyone who approached with suspicion. His aura was one of caution, warning others to keep their distance. He wasn’t targeting Babel Tower, but his gloomy mood made him distrustful of everyone.
Aurora, the “Sacred Heart’s Chosen,” was different. Her natural charm quickly helped her make friends among most of the Core Operators. As a seasoned team leader with vast experience, her social skills were unparalleled.
Her weapon was a friendly smile and warm conversation, even though it felt a little strange to befriend creatures like slimes and vampires. However, she hid these thoughts deep inside, as her emotional intelligence allowed her to keep her feelings in check.
Ganis attempted to discuss Amicio, but was told to wait. He could only nod in response.
Finally, the Babel Tower meeting ended, and everyone left with their own thoughts. Only Amy, sitting in her wheelchair, remained behind. She quietly hoped for some solitude.
Amy knew that the Savior would read the thoughts of those waiting. On her wheelchair, the frail girl smiled faintly. “My ‘sisters’ are starting to grow discontent with our situation. It’s happening faster than I thought… Some are already hoping to leave the base and explore the world outside.”
“I can still control them for now, but they’re intelligent and have their own emotions. They feel lonely, frustrated, and greedy. One of them may soon defy me and try to escape.”
Amy fell silent. Granting “emotions” meant granting “desires.” She wasn’t sure of the consequences of creating a powerful race driven by desire.
Noah’s voice entered her mind. “I don’t know if ‘free will’ truly exists. But creating a race more powerful than most intelligent species in Noah’s world may not be a good thing in the long run.”
[Seizing the present is even more important.]
[You have done very well…]
The Savior’s will appeared in Amy’s mind. She paused for a moment before smiling. “You’re right… Since the Doomsday Crisis is so pressing, we must take risks to find a solution.”
“I don’t know who else to turn to about this, but you are the only one who can truly judge this behavior. For me and others, creating and deciding the fate of a race is too ‘proud’… After all, none of us are gods.”
[Even gods cannot decide everything.]
[But before the final moment, someone must bear the responsibility of making all the decisions.]
Amy sank into contemplation. Meanwhile, Bai Yan used his power to send her back to Ring City in Noah’s world.
Bai Yan sensed a change in Amy. Once a “tyrant,” Amy now reflected on her actions and began questioning herself.
“Maybe it’s good for her that she’s not so stubborn and opinionated anymore.”
In the study of Tulip Manor, Dai knelt before Viscount Edmond, crying uncontrollably.
“Sir! During your absence, Cola—Cola ran away from home!”
“It’s okay,” Bai Yan smiled gently and consoled her.
“No, it’s not okay! It’s all my fault! I didn’t take good care of her. Master, if only I had looked after her better, she wouldn’t have run away!” Dai cried, unable to control herself.
She had no idea about anything at all.
Just days before, Bai Yan had saved his family. Dai thought she had only dreamed about it. Later, when the Dead Silence attack on Annottales occurred, she was genuinely terrified. But she thought the event had no bearing on the small lives in Tulip Manor.
“You’ve been taking good care of her,” Bai Yan said softly. “I know everything you’ve done. Cola didn’t want to eat while lying on the ground. She insisted on sitting and letting you feed her. You did that. You also helped her bury the cat litter. I know all of it.”
Dai recalled her time spent with Cola and began crying even harder. “That doesn’t matter! Cola is so adorable! I do it because I want to!”
She looked up at him with teary eyes. “Sir, you’re so capable. Is there a way to find Cola and bring her back?”
Bai Yan pondered. Finding Cola again would be tough. That “guy” likely despised him now.
He raised an eyebrow. “She used to scratch you so wildly before. And yet, you don’t hold a grudge?”
Dai shook her head. “It’s normal for stray cats to scratch people. After being taught a lesson by Sir, Cola never harmed anyone again. Compared to truly wild cats, Cola’s quite polite.”
“Hmm, now that I think of it, Cola does seem quite ‘elegant.’ She even requires me to sit and feed her while drinking and eating. She refuses to drink like other cats, licking water off the floor.”
Bai Yan chuckled.
But in his mind, he thought, “Cola might not come back. I might have to find a tame monster and disguise it as Cola.”
Once the problem was resolved, Bai Yan focused on his next task.
Inside Babel Tower, he took out a set of white, broken armor—an ancient relic once possessed by an Evil Spirit. This Civilization-level relic granted immunity to negative emotions and forced inner peace on its wearer.
“Extracted.”
The orb of undulating phantom light floated out of the armor.
“Game Tip: Element · Tranquility of the Soul (Rare) extracted successfully.”
He infused it into a silver ring with a smile. “I believe I can.”
With the ring enchanted, it now protected the mind from negativity.
His next plan was to retrieve the Savior’s separated power, remove “Infinity” from the Scarlet Moon, and give it to Alan—along with this newly created ring.
After completing the task, Bai Yan used his new power, the “Shadow Kingdom.”
He sent Mu Ling out first to learn, to ponder, and to grow stronger.
In Tatsumi City, Mu Ling,
wearing a black mask, sat in a
café. It had been a long time
since she had a moment of
rest. Usually, she was on
missions or focused on her
training.
She ordered a cappuccino and
sat in the corner, taking a sip.
She shook her head lightly, but
no matter where she was, her
heart couldn’t settle. The
Savior had just informed her of
another impending Doomsday
Crisis. She couldn’t calm
down.
Two individuals with
extraordinary abilities
approached her from a
hundred meters away. Despite
their impressive presence, she
sensed no malice.
They entered and sat across
from her.
“Hello. You are from Babel
Tower, right? We’re from the
Demon Hunt General Agency.
Let us introduce ourselves. I
am ‘Accordion’ and she is
‘Flute’.”
Accordion, a middle-aged man
with sunglasses, wore a white
suit and had a gentle smile.
Flute, a slender woman with
blue short hair and white cloth
covering her eyes, looked
serious.
Mu Ling’s calm voice cut
through the silence. “I’m the
target of the Air Alliance’s
pursuit. What do you want?”
Accordion smiled. “Please,
don’t be nervous. Our higher-
ups want us to understand
Babel Tower. Your
achievements in saving the
world are remarkable.”
Mu Ling was puzzled. “Then
why can’t you withdraw the
wanted order?”
Accordion sighed. “It’s simple.
The higher beings view Babel
Tower as a threat. If we lift the
order, it would displease
them.”
Mu Ling’s brow furrowed. “Who
are these higher beings?”
Accordion’s next words
confirmed her suspicions. “The
one in white.”
Mu Ling thought, “The Steel
Throne.” An ancient god who
was second only to the Heart
of Radiance. One of the
“Rainbows.” She knew that the
Savior of Dark Light also
opposed Babel Tower.
“Do you know why Steel
Throne and the Savior are
targeting Babel Tower? Are
they saying the Babel Tower is
trying to rule the world for
itself?” Accordion asked.
Mu Ling didn’t know how to
respond. The idea that a villain
could disguise themselves as
a hero was familiar. But could
the Babel Tower really be a
deceptive force?
Flute spoke softly, “We believe
in you.”
Accordion smiled. “The
prophecy has caused great
division among us. You
understand the weight of
divine decrees in Noah’s
world.”
Mu Ling was puzzled. What
was truly happening? Were the
gods blind to Babel Tower’s
true mission?
Just then, a voice echoed in
her mind: Corruption,
madness.
Mu Ling felt a chill. Could the
gods, the very deities who had
once been revered, now be
corrupted by the Outer God?
It seemed like the gods had
turned mad. This world was on
the brink of catastrophe.
