Chapter 365: The Babel Tower Arena
The dozen core members of Babel Tower gathered together once more.
As a mysterious organization, Babel Tower was undoubtedly a massive entity. There were over a dozen core members, each holding the power of a Crown, with two even at the Apocalypse level. The number of non-core and peripheral members was even more vast.
From the farthest corners of the world of Noah, Babel Tower was on the verge of becoming one of the most powerful factions.
In this particular gathering, three new Core Operators had joined. The operators present in the hall couldn’t help but take notice of the newcomers.
At some point, the “World Savior,” Profligate, also made his entrance. He had acquired a mask— a round, white mask without a face.
The first to notice him were undoubtedly the Scarlet Moon and Maryse.
Maryse hesitated for a moment, unsure if she should walk over.
In fact, her previous journey in another world had brought many realizations to light. She had developed a great fondness for Mr. Profligate, but it wouldn’t be accurate to say that she had completely fallen in love with him. Twenty years of loneliness had caused her to develop an uncontrollable affection for exceptional and kind individuals of the opposite sex.
But if she chose to love him, there wouldn’t be any problem in the future. This was the answer provided by an alternate timeline.
Even though she couldn’t hear his innermost thoughts, it didn’t matter much to her.
Her affection for Profligate was natural. If the genders were swapped, it would be the story of a lonely young gentleman, confined to his home for twenty years. After finally escaping, he joined a mysterious organization and was constantly guided and cared for by a beautiful and strong-willed elder sister figure. It would be impossible for him not to develop affection in his heart.
But love that truly etches into the bones isn’t all that common. Most people simply make do with what they have.
So should she be more proactive?
Maryse hesitated.
If she were only eighteen, she wouldn’t be thinking about being proactive. But the 28-year-old woman, who had been lonely for many years, was a completely different person— fierce like a wolf, powerful like a tiger!
Suddenly, Maryse noticed something astonishing: the Queen of the Scarlet Moon had actually walked past her before she could make a move!
“Huh?”
Maryse blinked in surprise.
What was going on?
She quickly saw the Scarlet Moon approach Mr. Profligate, and right in front of everyone, she reached out her hand, attempting to embrace him. But to her surprise, Mr. Profligate coldly pushed her away.
“…”
Maryse rubbed her unbelieving eyes.
What just happened?
She rubbed her eyes again, still unsure of what she had witnessed.
A feeling of confusion washed over her.
“What’s going on? What is she doing?” wondered the onlookers. “The legendary Lady Scarlet Moon, the queen of Tatsumi City’s bloodline, what was she just about to do?”
What else could she do? The greedy Scarlet Moon was probably just yearning to feed on blood.
Bai Yan calmly reminded her:
“There are still many people here. Don’t act so impulsively. Besides, you’ve already fed yesterday. You probably won’t need it for a while. Why can’t you resist for a bit?”
“It’s not that I couldn’t bear it,” Scarlet Moon said with a gentle shake of her head. “I simply decided I no longer have to endure.”
She looked into Bai Yan’s eyes with a playful smile, “Now I can do as I please. Whether you admit it or not, our relationship can only be this ‘intimate.’”
Her gaze lingered on him, her voice soft and teasing, “I just wanted to drink your blood. What does it have to do with you?”
Bai Yan smiled, giving a quiet command, “However, I still cannot allow you to drink. Please bear with it for a while.”
Scarlet Moon rolled her eyes, carefree, unwilling to give much attention to his words. In this world, no one could suppress her true self and instincts anymore.
But, for some strange reason, in that very moment, a sense of obedience arose in Scarlet Moon’s heart. It was as though an irresistible force deep within her wanted to obey him.
What was happening?
Why did she feel the urge to follow his commands?
It was as if her very soul was imprinting this feeling of obedience. On a spiritual level, she didn’t want to resist at all. She wanted to obey him, deep within, without question.
Scarlet Moon was stunned. Was this the side effect of sucking blood?
Bai Yan, seeing her lost in thought, knew that his command had taken effect. Spawns couldn’t defy the divine being that sheltered them.
Children could betray their parents, but spawns could never betray their master.
In fact, Bai Yan couldn’t help but feel a warmth in his heart when he looked at the Scarlet Moon. Even now, he felt a fundamental affection for all members of the Scarlet Blood Clan. This affection would continue to pass down through bloodlines, unchanged for millennia.
Maryse stood nearby, wide-eyed, watching the exchange. They were whispering in each other’s ears, standing so close, as if they were a couple in love!
Her heart sank.
No! Don’t! Please stay away from that inappropriate person!
Maryse thought about it, her gaze falling on the Scarlet Moon. She felt deflated, a strong sense of inferiority washing over her. She lowered her head, her spirit crushed, feeling like a frost-bitten eggplant.
“Dead mosquito… can you please stay away?”
Maryse muttered in frustration, too embarrassed to approach them. She feared that by doing so, she would “disturb” them.
What if she shamelessly approached? The Scarlet Moon would likely turn to her and say, “Moriarty, let’s go stand over there.”
And with that, she would pull Mr. Profligate along, who wouldn’t even glance at Maryse.
The thought made her feel so embarrassed that she imagined she might as well jump off the building right then and there.
As she imagined all the possible scenarios, Bai Yan, with his unique ability to perceive thoughts, could hear every single one of them.
“…”
Even someone as shameless as him couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed in that moment. A little. Just a little.
Maryse, feeling determined, walked over. Her heart was racing, but Scarlet Moon didn’t even glance at her. She simply stared ahead, deep in thought.
Meanwhile, the others in Babel Tower had begun to chat.
The “Chosen of the Sacred Heart,” Aurora, noticed her acquaintances Mu Ling and Maryse. She saw Maryse approaching a certain man and, with a smile, walked over to Mu Ling.
“We meet again, Nightsaber! It has been an honor fighting by your side. Will we have the chance to fight together again in the future?”
Mu Ling, with her usual calm demeanor, smiled and nodded. “With utmost pleasure.”
Aurora’s enthusiasm grew, and she put a hand on Mu Ling’s shoulder. “You must trust the Savior a lot, I can tell…”
Mu Ling replied without hesitation, “The Savior is the master I trust and admire. So far, almost all my strength, glory, and life have been bestowed upon me by him.”
“I see…” Aurora responded, her eyes glancing towards the Savior, seated on the distant throne. Her gaze was filled with a mix of emotions. In her heart, she had always admired this great figure.
But He had already…
Her heart shattered, the sorrow too overwhelming to contain.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Bai Yan spoke to Maryse first.
“Although I want to say ‘long time no see,’ we actually just met not too long ago… ‘Psychic Dancer,’ I saw your performance in Annottales. You did very well.”
Maryse hesitated for a moment, a smile forming beneath her mask. “I heard Mu Ling say it yesterday, Mr. Profligate. In the final showdown with Annottales, it was actually your decisive strike that defeated the enemy.”
She thought for a moment and added, “You’re so amazing, Mr. Profligate! If it weren’t for you, Annottales might have been completely destroyed!”
Maryse decided to throw aside her dignity. Sometimes, you have to fight for what you want!
Scarlet… That big mosquito always had a grumpy face, as if someone owed her money. Despite her size, few could tolerate this kind of woman. Hmph.
Bai Yan couldn’t help but burst into laughter and reached out to gently pat Maryse’s head.
He was about to burst with laughter, but stopped himself.
