Chapter 35: The Rat Man (Part 2)
Bai Yan observed everything calmly from the ladies’ room.
Although he couldn’t see anything directly, he knew everything that was happening thanks to Psychic Dancer’s telepathic abilities, which he had acquired through Power Possession.
Bai Yan had never experienced anything like this before. He could now hear all animals within a 30-meter radius, except for insects and plants. Moreover, he could clearly perceive everything happening around him.
Bai Yan realized that Psychic Dancer must have improved her abilities significantly. Previously, she couldn’t have sensed things from such a distance.
Suddenly, he detected a strange creature approaching him from beneath the ground!
[Human!]
[Eat! Recover!]
Bai Yan was startled when he heard the peculiar voice. He had only come to observe.
But now the strange entity was coming for him.
He knew how to defeat enemies in the gray area, as escaping into it was second nature for Babel Tower members.
Bai Yan switched to Nightsaber’s mode.
At that moment, Bai Yan accessed the dark blood of the crime hunter family, which granted him the power to overcome anything in the gray area.
He grabbed the faucet in the bathroom, breaking it off easily. Bai Yan then slammed it against the writhing gray shadow on the ground.
An immense force struck the shadow, causing black blood to spray out like a fountain. Bai Yan deftly stepped backward, avoiding every drop.
He observed the blood on the ground without discomfort, feeling somehow more complete.
It was a remarkable experience that made life feel exhilarating.
The Rat Man emerged from the ground’s shadows, screaming and struggling to move. His labored breathing indicated he wouldn’t survive much longer.
“Who’s there?”
Alan’s surprised voice rang out. Bai Yan remained composed and quickly activated Nightsaber’s skill.
“Deep blue — world”
Bai Yan’s eyes transformed to a deep blue shade, and the world around him gradually took on the same hue. Everything became perfectly still.
He swiftly exited the ladies’ room and smiled at the inquisitive Alan.
Bai Yan circled around Alan and entered the men’s room. He then switched back to Psychic Dancer’s mode to hear Alan’s thoughts.
The time freeze ended.
Alan rushed to the ladies’ room, only to find a dying monster on the floor. The gruesome scene left him momentarily stunned.
[Who could it be?]
[They killed the monster with a single strike. Such incredible power.]
[They dared to fight monsters who worship the Chaos Star and concealed their identity from me. Could they be from the Babel Tower?]
Bai Yan was surprised. ‘He was somewhat correct.’
Alan frowned and produced a rectangular black cloth from his sleeve. It displayed a three-dimensional projection showing the presence of all living beings nearby.
Magicians always had contingency plans, and Alan was an exceptionally well-rounded supernatural being.
Of course, his direct combat abilities were rather limited, placing him at the lower end of the Might scale.
[There you are! In the men’s room! Let’s see who you really are.]
‘He found my location? How did he manage that?’ Bai Yan wondered curiously. He quickly reverted to Nightsaber’s mode, preparing to use “Deep Blue World.”
Alan suddenly drew a doorframe on the wall with his cane and burst into the men’s bathroom.
However, he found it empty.
He was startled to discover that his magic curtain showed the target was actually in the women’s room!
Alan spun around and dashed back to the women’s room, only to find the person had returned to the men’s room.
‘What’s going on? How is this possible?’
‘What kind of ability is this? Some sort of position switching?’
Alan was baffled, failing to notice the existence of the Deep Blue World.
“Who are you?” Alan asked directly.
Bai Yan wanted to respond but feared Alan would recognize his voice. Instead, he tapped the wall three times.
“Bang, bang, bang.”
Then he departed.
Alan passed through the wall again but found the mysterious person had vanished. The magic curtain no longer detected any human presence.
“They’re gone… Who could it have been?”
He had initially suspected it was Nightsaber, given the similar abilities displayed.
Nightsaber was likely Mu Ling, and it would make sense for her to return to the university.
She was certainly capable of killing strange creatures and deceiving him.
Yet somehow, Alan instinctively felt this wasn’t Nightsaber.
Besides, Nightsaber wouldn’t resort to using a broken tap in combat. She clearly preferred her black sword.
He muttered, “The mysterious person knocked three times. Perhaps they were the third member of the Babel Tower?”
Alan was lost in thought when he suddenly remembered that Bai Yan was still waiting for him for dinner.
“I need to hurry.”
Lower-ranking Night Watchmen would handle the monster’s remains. Alan cast the magic curtain to conceal the entire bathroom. Ordinary people would simply ignore it as they passed by.
Before leaving, he noticed a book on the altar.
*Abyss Memories*
“A treasure of the Deep Ones…”
The Deep Ones were a race of servants who worshipped the Chaos Star, existing only in legends. Alan’s frown deepened as he pocketed the book.
During his walk home, Alan contemplated many things. The prophecy book’s failure indicated intervention by the Outer God, something that had rarely occurred throughout history.
He suspected that Tatsumi City would soon face terrible events and a massive catastrophe. Would people survive such a disaster?
NO ONE KNOWS.
‘The strong have better chances of survival,’ Alan thought.
“Become stronger…” he murmured.
Inspiration formed the basis of all supernatural powers and greatly enhanced intuition. Thus, most supernatural beings learned to trust their instincts.
He purchased two coffees and headed to the restaurant where they had arranged to meet. Bai Yan was waiting for him.
Bai Yan sat serenely by the window, listening to music through his headphones, acting as if nothing unusual had occurred.
He said calmly, “I’ve ordered two cat omelets. They’ll be ready soon. Is that coffee for me?”
“Yes.”
Alan smiled and offered the coffee with unusual courtesy.
“What’s the matter with you?” Bai Yan was momentarily puzzled. ‘He must want something from me.’
The smile faded from Alan’s face.
He took the seat opposite, lowered his head in thought for a while, then spoke more seriously than ever before.
“Bai Yan, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What is it?” Bai Yan was surprised.
Though he could guess Alan’s intentions, he hadn’t expected this situation!
Alan said gravely, “It’s about the truth of this world… Once you know it, you can never return to a normal life.
But you’ll also have the opportunity to obtain real power!
“It’s like a warrior who dares to light a torch in darkness. Even knowing it will attract danger and misfortune, they choose to grasp the true nature of reality.”
He fixed Bai Yan with an intense stare and continued.
“I know you would choose this path.”
Alan paused, “However, I still need to confirm because this is truly momentous… Once I reveal the hidden truth of this world, there’s no going back.”
“Do you want to hear it?”
Bai Yan was momentarily speechless. Seeing Alan’s sincere expression, he felt a twinge of guilt.
‘I’m sorry, but I can’t share my secret with you.’
