Chapter 35: The Rat Man (Part 1)
The Biochemistry Building is situated on the south side of Herendor University, where numerous science and chemistry labs are housed, distant from the other teaching buildings. Many frightening legends surround it.
These include tales of a laboratory explosion, a wandering female ghost, and even a dog-headed evil spirit.
Of Herendor University’s ten horror legends, eight of them occurred in the Biochemistry Building.
Bai Yan walked calmly through the darkened Biochemistry Building without encountering any students or teachers, as it wasn’t class time.
He swiftly dodged toward the stairs and halted abruptly without making a sound. For ordinary people, it’s difficult to comprehend the sensation of possessing a superpower.
If it’s only at the “Origin” level of superpower, then ordinary people can perceive it similarly to how humans sense the physical superiority of top athletes compared to themselves.
However, those with “Might” level superpowers have essentially become an entirely different species from human beings.
Bai Yan had copied Nightsaber’s superpower. His body felt as light as a feather, allowing him to “dance” into any position he desired.
Like an agile cat, he rolled and jumped silently onto the stairway handrail.
Bai Yan could sense a blue card burning in the air, knowing that when it completely burned out, he would revert to being an ordinary person.
“It’s best to avoid remaining in a superpowered state for too long, or you’ll struggle to readjust when returning to normal.”
If one has never witnessed the light, darkness holds less terror, but once you’ve seen the light, how can you endure the darkness?
The Biochemistry Building was extremely dark, completely impervious to external light, and eerily silent.
Bai Yan had reached the second-floor bathroom. Minutes later, Alan arrived.
Several mice darted out from beneath Bai Yan’s feet, squeaking continuously as if completely unafraid of his presence.
“Despite the cleaner’s diligence, how could there be so many mice? That’s impossible…”
Deep in thought, Bai Yan suddenly heard an unusual sound from the men’s bathroom—a strange hybrid between a wild animal’s roar and an otherworldly scream.
Something terrifying seemed to lurk within that sound, causing him to flinch slightly.
Thanks to “Power Possession,” his courage had increased. Bai Yan felt no fear; instead, he experienced a slight thrill.
He realized he seemed almost too composed… Even during his last encounter with Child of the Star, he hadn’t experienced any emotional fluctuations.
‘Perhaps I was destined for involvement in such matters.’
“Is this the place?”
Suddenly, Bai Yan heard Alan’s voice nearby and immediately concealed himself in the women’s bathroom.
Moments later, Alan arrived, light perspiration visible on his forehead.
Looking down at several rats circling before the men’s room, he muttered, “According to the prophecy book, this is a level 2 situation, so it shouldn’t be too challenging.”
DHA classified dangerous superpower events into five distinct levels.
Level 1 encompassed incidents causing no casualties, requiring intervention solely to maintain secrecy.
Level 2 involved incidents with casualties but remained resolvable by ordinary individuals.
Level 3 described incidents causing casualties that necessitated intervention by superpowered individuals.
Level 4 designated major events resulting in numerous casualties, requiring multiple superpowered individuals to address.
Level 5 represented catastrophic events threatening mass casualties, demanding immediate DHA priority response.
Alan had just noticed on his phone that the “event” mentioned in the prophecy book was located in the Biochemistry Building.
He decided immediate action would be prudent.
Since the prophecy indicated a level 2 incident, Alan submitted a mobile application to handle the task alone, planning to resolve it quickly before joining Bai Yan.
“Very well, let’s examine what’s inside.”
Alan produced a pristine white cloth, waved it, and gradually materialized a small spider-like robot on the floor.
“Hey, you in there! Don’t dawdle! Come out now!”
Alan crouched to activate the spider robot, which immediately scuttled toward the men’s bathroom.
Alan checked his phone to view the robot’s feed.
The men’s bathroom contained numerous white candles arranged around a small black altar.
Before the altar knelt a black-haired, half-human-sized, bizarre ape-like creature.
It emitted gloomy, hoarse sounds while facing away from the spider robot.
“Born in nothingness, return to chaos.”
“The only true star among stars.”
“The endless darkness lingering at the furthest reaches of the abyssal haze.”
“I shall offer you the flesh and blood of Earth’s Son.”
“I eternally anticipate your grand return.”
The peculiar being in the video suddenly turned around.
Alan’s pupils constricted as cold dread crept up his spine.
The black mouse-like body appeared grotesquely bloated, bearing a corpulent, twisted, and hideously ugly face.
It stared directly at the camera!
In the next instant, the Rat Man lunged forward, and the phone screen went black.
No!
Alan recoiled, suddenly realizing the Rat Man’s power far exceeded level 2 danger—the prophecy book had erred!
Alan struggled to regain his composure.
How could the prophecy book be wrong? Perhaps this involved the Outer Gods?
This thought made Alan draw a sharp breath. Anything connected to the Outer Gods undoubtedly constituted a major crisis.
At worst, it could threaten global survival!
Alan’s expression grew grave. Given these circumstances, he couldn’t let it escape!
“It’s too late to summon assistance. I’ll have to handle this myself. You won’t escape.”
Alan smiled confidently, resembling a magician preparing for a performance.
He withdrew a long black cane from his sleeve and tapped the ground lightly, generating an invisible barrier.
The Rat Man’s massive size prevented escape through the small bathroom window.
Effectively, only one exit remained!
Alan suddenly looked up to see a black monster bursting from the bathroom. Its ferocious face roared as it charged directly into the invisible barrier.
The Rat Man tumbled to the ground, bloodied, and screamed.
“Ow!”
“Magic’s essence lies in deception, and I practice deception daily.”
Alan smiled as a black top hat mysteriously appeared on his head.
Removing his hat, he extracted a toy gun and fired a toy bullet at the Rat Man.
The bullet detonated mid-flight, producing a violent shockwave!
The Rat Man was thrown back into the bathroom, black blood spattering everywhere, and suddenly began an incantation!
“Great Chaos Star, I willingly offer one-fifth of my soul. Grant me passage to the gray domain.”
A Sacrifice!
Alan’s expression shifted.
No! He couldn’t allow the Rat Man to enter the gray domain. That realm existed at the intersection of reality and nothingness, completely inaccessible to normal humans!
As the grotesque body gradually faded, Alan quickly released a white dove from his sleeve, attempting to prevent the transition.
The dove transformed mid-flight into a giant eagle exceeding one meter in height and rushed into the bathroom, but arrived a moment too late.
The Rat Man had completely vanished from this world.
“Damn it!”
Alan clenched his teeth, falling into deep contemplation about his next move.
