Chapter 328: “Dark Night Lost City”
On his phone screen, Bai Yan saw a flood of game prompts, evoking a nostalgic feeling. It seemed that Babel Tower had officially reached the middle stage of the game, and the content had become much more complex.
Game Tip: The grand event “Dark Night Lost City” has begun.
The event would last for three days, with the first two days serving as the “Prelude” and the third day marking the “Final Battle” moment.
The time for the activity’s intervention had increased, and the “Savior” could now influence the real world up to ten hours in advance through Babel Tower.
This event is divided into two stages: the “Prelude” and the “Final Battle.” During these stages, the Savior is not allowed to use the “Summon” power and cannot bring additional Core Operators into the fight. The Savior may only choose three to five Core Operators to participate in each phase.
The event adopted a Roguelike mechanism. Before each game begins, the Savior will select necessary “assistance” based on previous attempts, with the game content shifting due to distortions caused by the “Pupil of Chaos.”
Every ten hours, the game progress will be evaluated, and there’s no turning back.
In this grand adventure, the Savior must complete seven tasks. If they finish three tasks, the activity is considered complete, and they will earn 200 Legend Points. Completing five tasks results in extra special rewards along with 300 Legend Points. To achieve a perfect SSS rating, the Savior must complete all seven tasks and earn 500 Legend Points.
Task Breakdown:
Mission 1: Protecting the People
Save as many ordinary folks as possible. If more than one hundred thousand lives are lost in Annottales, the mission will fail.
Reward: 100 Source Energy Points.
Mission 2: The Game of Salvation
All Core Operators must survive, and at least one ‘Apocalypse’ level enemy must be defeated.
Reward: 100 Source Energy Points.
Mission 3: Hear My Roar
Disrupt the Ritual of Tranquility ceremony.
Reward: 200 Source Energy Points, Spirit of Revelation 1.
Mission 4: Everyone’s Joy
Ensure all allied units remain alive.
Reward: 200 Source Energy Points, Spirit of Revelation 1.
Mission 5: Spellcaster’s Quest
Defeat the leader of the Moon Witch Order, ‘Evil Bastard.’
Reward: 300 Source Energy Points, 2 Spirits of Revelation, 5 Awakening Souls.
Mission 6: The True Conspiracy
Uncover the true purpose of two factions in Annottales.
Reward: Rare Mystical Power ‘Dream of Nightmare,’ 2 Spirits of Revelation, 5 Awakening Souls.
Mission 7: Never Silent
Defeat Dead Silence. Half of their members must be killed, and their leader, ‘Silence,’ must be defeated to stop their true conspiracy.
Reward: 300 Source Energy Points, one Tactical Card, one Entertainment Card, 3 Spirits of Revelation, 10 Awakening Souls.
The rewards were substantial: Source Energy Points, Awakening Souls, Tactical and Entertainment Cards, and Spirits of Revelation.
Bai Yan murmured, “Awakening Soul is completely useless as dog food… But if we could get one from the Babel Tower, it would drive the outsiders, the extraordinary beings, mad.”
Setting aside the main quest, the “Doomsday Crisis,” for now, this was clearly the most significant event in Babel Tower’s second playthrough.
The rewards were outstanding. Completing all seven tasks would grant a base of twelve hundred Source Energy Points. With a perfect evaluation, Legend Points would double to two thousand four, and converting those points could add another thousand…
The potential reward from this grand event could be as high as three thousand four hundred Source Energy Points!
Additionally, after doubling the rewards, there were eighteen Spirits of Revelation to collect.
Bai Yan thought, What does three thousand four hundred Source Energy Points mean? He had recently completed an emergency mission in the slums and only earned one hundred twenty Source Energy Points.
“With fifty Source Energy Points, you can draw once. With three thousand four hundred, I could draw sixty-eight times!”
Adding in the Source Energy Points he had accumulated, he could easily do nine ten draws!
However, unlocking the new “Exchange House” building would require three thousand points, but there would still be plenty left over.
Even though Bai Yan was no longer thrilled by the idea of summoning, he couldn’t help but take a deep breath at the thought. If he completed this event perfectly, Babel Tower would make him incredibly wealthy in an instant.
But Bai Yan knew very well that the difficulty and the rewards were interdependent.
The Doomsday Crisis had also offered generous rewards, but with only an A rating and the need to revive many members, he hadn’t earned much in the end.
This is a grand event that doesn’t exist in the story of the first playthrough… He thought. What could have caused this unexpected change?
Taking a deep breath, Bai Yan realized he had to do something first before starting the event.
“Give me a clue, please…”
Real Digital World
He dismantled the Babel Tower again, analyzing the underlying data for hidden information.
“If a bloodline possesses the power of Dead Silence, they will be immune to many enemies’ ‘curses’…”
“Deploying only three Core Operators in each stage will earn an additional purple achievement called ‘Few Against Many’…”
“Dead Silence has summoned additional help, the ‘Son of God’ Amicio…”
“The true plot of Dead Silence involves two main objectives, and the most important sacrifice isn’t Annottales…”
Bai Yan paused, his head pounding from the onslaught of information. “Luckily, this wave of ‘cheating’ yielded many crucial pieces of information.”
For instance, the Scarlet Moon has a restraining attribute against Dead Silence. There were hidden achievements, additional bosses like Amicio, and a deeper plot at play.
He recalled the “Son of God” Amicio, who frequently appeared during Bai Yan’s first playthrough. Amicio was one of the most powerful figures, a black wizard with unmatched skill. The most famous descendant of the Fate’s Strings Master within the Rainbow, he had no fixed allegiance and was unpredictable—one day a savior, the next a destroyer.
In Bai Yan’s first playthrough, Amicio was an elusive character, appearing unexpectedly either as a powerful ally or a deadly enemy, a hidden boss with a fifty-fifty chance of being either.
Amicio’s strategic genius and mysterious nature made him one of the hardest bosses to defeat. His plot armor was formidable; Bai Yan had never been able to defeat him because Amicio always seemed to escape death in the nick of time.
In this adventure, however, Amicio was the enemy.
Bai Yan sighed, “Seems my luck is a bit worse this time.”
If Amicio had been on his side, the event’s difficulty would have been reduced, but now, as an adversary, he posed an immense challenge.
“Let’s begin,” Bai Yan muttered to himself, shaking off his hesitation. He clicked on the Dark Night Lost City event.
Eve Phase Selection
Over the past few days, the selection of operators for the first 48-hour “Eve” phase had occurred. This was crucial because of the event’s restrictions: Summoning was prohibited, and even the usual deployment methods like airdropping the Babel Tower squad were not allowed.
The only remaining variable was Bai Yan himself.
In both the “Eve” and “Final Battle” phases, he could only deploy three to five Core Operators. Thus, choosing the right team was essential.
Bai Yan felt uneasy. “Why? If Babel Tower is a game created to save the world, why can’t it give me all the power directly? Why are there so many restrictions?”
The answers were unclear, and there was little information to work with. But Bai Yan had to choose carefully which Core Operators to send.
The Crown-level Core Operators were always the top candidates. Seven of them were available: Queen of the Scarlet Moon, Nightsaber, Psychic Dancer, Sacred Heart’s Chosen, Mysterious Magic, Fist of Duel, and Sword of Demons.
“If we deploy the strongest Nightsaber, Queen of the Scarlet Moon, and Psychic Dancer in the ‘Eve’ phase, the Final Battle would become much more difficult without powerful core operators…” Bai Yan murmured. “The Queen of the Scarlet Moon is undoubtedly the strongest Core Operator, and her ability to restrain Dead Silence’s curse might be vital here.”
Finally, after much deliberation, Bai Yan made his decision.
For the “Eve” phase of Dark Night Lost City, he chose Nightsaber, Psychic Dancer, and Sacred Heart’s Chosen.
