Chapter 32: Marquis Scarlet
Half an hour later, Bai Yan exhaled deeply on the sofa. After several attempts, he had fully mastered how to clear the new event and finally completed the stage on his fifth try.
The first stage had already proven so challenging.
‘This wasn’t how games were meant to be. If it were a mobile game, it would have faced severe criticism!’ Bai Yan complained internally, knowing full well that Babel Tower was far from an ordinary game.
“Save.”
He finally saved his progress and smiled upon seeing the completion reward. Bai Yan examined the reward and let out a sigh of relief.
‘Mu Ling, or should I say Miss Nightsaber, I’ve finished here. Your turn now.’
“BOOM!”
Lightning accompanied thunder in the rain-soaked night, and once again, Mu Ling found her body beyond her control.
But what did it matter?
She no longer experienced fear. She had grown accustomed to the sensation of being under the Savior’s influence. Her body and mind had adapted. Perhaps she would feel afraid if she lost his protection someday?
Mu Ling suddenly recalled the dog she had raised in her youth. One day, the dog vanished, and despite crying for hours, she never found him.
‘In the depths of night, would he think of his master while huddled in some corner?’
‘Wait, what am I thinking about?’
If the Savior had been an ordinary person, she might have felt somewhat embarrassed by her thoughts, but now that sense of shame had vanished since she believed the Savior wasn’t human.
‘People probably see me as the Hound of Babel Tower now…’
At that moment, Mu Ling parted her lips gently and felt the raindrops landing on her tongue.
“The Black Star destroyed my family. I’ve long since lost all hope and dignity. Now revenge is all that remains. The Blood has always been deeply embedded in the city. They’ve thoroughly infiltrated various industries. I heard that Marquis Scarlet possesses extensive information about the Black Star.”
‘I must obtain that information from him.’
‘Why am I talking to myself?’
She couldn’t comprehend it at all. ‘The Savior is controlling me. So these explanations are for my benefit! He is seeking revenge on my behalf…’ Mu Ling instinctively wanted to clench her fists, but found herself unable to.
Gratitude welled up within her. The Babel Tower wasn’t merely a cold-hearted salvationist organization. The Savior appeared ruthless, but he actually wanted to help his subordinates.
Unconsciously, a sense of belonging arose within her.
If Bai Yan checked the operator lists now, he would certainly discover that Mu Ling’s loyalty had risen to 7. As this event continued, her loyalty might increase even further.
Mu Ling’s head was filled with scattered thoughts. She wandered through the intricate streets, passing by others in the storm without a backward glance, making her way to the more isolated areas of the city.
The number of vagrants and homeless people sheltering from the rain increased. They stared maliciously at the beautiful stranger, but none dared approach.
This was Marquis Scarlet’s territory, where crimes against women were forbidden… The Blood didn’t interact directly with the people of the real world, yet they still managed to influence powerful gangs.
Of course, once Mu Ling walked another block, things would change. She was strikingly beautiful. Any man who saw her struggled to control himself.
Mu Ling had handled plenty of harassment since her youth. She usually wouldn’t be too harsh and would only deliver “light kicks” to a man’s lower abdomen that ensured he wouldn’t die.
Now, she merely gazed ahead and walked directly to a brightly lit establishment, the Scarlet. Four vampire guards in black suits stood at the entrance.
Only one person would use that name for the club. Having lived in this city for several years, Mu Ling knew of the powerful Blood presence in this territory.
Marquis Scarlet was quite renowned among the Blood. At minimum, he possessed Might-level strength. He had existed for countless years. When the Queen of the Scarlet Moon led the Blood from the Air Alliances to Tatsumi City, he served as one of her right-hand men.
He was a well-bred collector and gentleman. His respect for women was so profound that he would allow female enemies to harm him. Perhaps only in extreme anger would he ever strike a woman.
‘My task is to gather information about the Black Star from him.’
Mu Ling wondered how the Savior would manipulate her into accomplishing this. First, she needed to enter this secret vampire club, but the four guards maintained their vigilant watch at the entrance.
She had never considered harming anyone. The Blood had always maintained a low profile in Tatsumi City. To date, they hadn’t killed any innocent people. Mu Ling wouldn’t kill indiscriminately based on someone’s background or race.
She fell into deep contemplation, increasingly curious about how the Savior would control her.
At that moment, a dense black mist materialized.
Though not her first encounter, the black fog still instilled deep fear within her. The next instant, a long white-purple cloak emerged from the fog.
‘What is this?’
Her hand automatically reached out and grasped the cloak. A vast amount of indescribable information arranged itself in her mind, forming comprehensible content.
Merlin’s cloak, a civilization-level relic. The cloak contained the mythical power of the caster.
Though it was a lower-level civilization relic, Mu Ling still swallowed as she watched herself don it without hesitation.
Her flesh fragmented and reconstructed. Her limbs instantly contracted, and in a blink, she had transformed into a translucent bird barely the size of a human thumb.
Without pause, Mu Ling flew to the side of the club and entered through the window.
When she looked up again, she found herself officially inside the club. Bright light flooded her vision, sweeping away the darkness and gloom of the stormy world outside. It was as if she had entered an enchanting new realm.
The club’s interior was luxuriously decorated and incredibly imposing. Classical music played throughout, while well-dressed waiters politely served fresh drinks, desserts, and fruit on trays.
This was an auction house.
The masked men and women present were all Blood. No one noticed Mu Ling’s arrival. She drew close to others and overheard the vampires’ conversations.
“The spell books this time are worthless. Just basic knowledge.”
“I acquired a history book about other worlds last time.”
“Do you suppose Babel Tower and Black Star are enemies?”
‘The bloodpuccino seems rather weak today.’
Mu Ling quickly spotted Mililyn, the vampire viscount, drinking alone by the window, and she automatically flew over.
“Why haven’t you arrived, Scarlet?”
Mililyn sipped a cocktail with a cool expression of displeasure.
Mu Ling sensed that she possessed a low-level might of Blood kin. Her strength would be problematic… without the Savior’s assistance.
Next, she flew directly to a room within the club.
The room appeared markedly different. Classical music played inside. The architecture was noble and elegant. It spanned at least two hundred square meters and housed various sculptures and oil paintings.
Could this be Marquis Scarlet’s chamber?
Mu Ling suddenly began transforming again. She gradually resumed her human form and walked purposefully toward an oil painting.
‘Is the information there?’
Her expression shifted. Then she retrieved a red letter from behind the oil painting. Suddenly, she heard applause.
“You truly are the Hound of Babel Tower indeed. I can scarcely believe you managed to infiltrate my room in such a manner.”
Mu Ling felt extreme shock. Her expression… remained unchanged.
The one applauding was none other than the renowned Blood member, Marquis Scarlet.
He possessed a handsome yet dignified face, his smile revealing a hint of pride. Dressed in a red tuxedo, he held a glass of “red wine” and resembled a nobleman from the Medieval Ages.
“Please explain your presence, my beautiful lady. It had better be a compelling reason.”
Marquis Scarlet’s eyes grew crimson.
“Otherwise, I would take great pleasure in sampling you.”
