Chapter 30: The Event Begins
“Thanks to our perfect industrial and agricultural systems, Tatsumi has become one of the most prosperous independent cities. The automated agricultural sector we developed ensures that we can export products to other independent cities while maintaining self-sufficiency.”
“Tatsumi has attempted to expand into the wilderness many times, but all attempts failed. We still cannot handle large-scale natural disasters outside of the independent cities.”
“Alright. Class dismissed.”
“Bai Yan, come here.” At the end of the final afternoon class, the elderly professor suddenly called out to Bai Yan, who was holding his phone. The latter reluctantly put it away.
“Coming.”
Bai Yan followed the elderly professor out of the classroom and walked to the corner of the teaching building.
The elderly professor looked disappointed and spoke in a stern tone, “Bai Yan, you’re on your phone every day in class. What’s going on? You weren’t like this before. I remember you studying diligently and taking notes every day.”
“It’s not easy to graduate from Herendor. I know studying is exhausting, but you must understand that education is the fairest way for everyone to change their circumstances.”
“After you leave school, you might be eliminated for making one wrong move during an interview, or for not looking or sounding right. There’s no such fairness in society.”
Bai Yan muttered, “I think I look good.”
“What did you say? Do you plan to become a gigolo?”
The elderly professor paused before saying, “I spoke with the counselor about your situation, and he helped arrange a student grant for you.”
Bai Yan remained silent for a while. He knew the elderly professor was speaking from genuine concern. He shouldn’t be ungrateful.
Even though he knew he had more important matters than studying, he couldn’t disappoint the elderly professor who wanted to help him.
“Thank you.” He took a deep breath and said earnestly, “I understand, Professor. It’s entirely my fault.” Bai Yan acknowledged his mistake and promised, “I won’t make excuses. I’ll definitely sit in the front row and pay attention in the future.”
‘Well, that means only during your class. I’ll use my phone in other classes.’
The elderly professor thought Bai Yan was trying to deceive him, but then he saw a pair of sincere, spirited eyes. They were too earnest. Only a genuinely good person or a masterful actor could show such sincerity.
“Very well, I believe you.” The elderly professor nodded and left, satisfied.
Bai Yan shrugged. Twenty years of education was enough. Besides, he didn’t need to worry about his livelihood… as the master of the Babel Tower, financial concerns were impossible in his future.
He bowed slightly in the direction the elderly professor had departed. He knew perfectly well that he wasn’t destined for an ordinary path.
Bai Yan turned around and took out his phone again. Without hesitation, he messaged the counselor to inquire about the grant.
Half an hour later, he was back in the library. Many students were studying diligently in the hall, but someone had taken his usual spot.
Bai Yan shrugged. He was here to use his phone anyway, and there weren’t any books at his seat. It didn’t matter. He found another secluded spot with a light gray sofa. It was more comfortable but less suitable for reading. Bai Yan reclined on the sofa and logged into the Babel Tower. He first checked the auto-play profits.
[Daily record of Nightsaber]
“Pursued a cultist with his family. His son defended him. Nightsaber spared them and departed.
Later interrogated the cultist in an alley and ultimately killed him. Mood – 3.

Bai Yan remained silent as he continued reading. He suddenly noticed that not only had Nightsaber’s attributes changed, but there was also a new Rank.

‘You’ve grown considerably, Nightsaber.’ Bai Yan was quite pleased with this self-motivated operator.
He then checked Psychic Dancer.
[Daily record of Psychic Dancer]
“Reading GL magazines with her personal maid, Irena. Learning makeup and making herself look silly. Mood + 1.
Anonymously posted online to condemn the hostile netizens who defamed Psychic Dancer. Mood – 1.
Learning that the repulsive Marquis Scarlet from the Blood is visiting her home. Mood – 1.”
As usual, he was speechless in every possible way.
Marquis Scarlet… Somehow, Bai Yan felt he had encountered this name before, but couldn’t recall clearly.
Bai Yan pondered briefly, then noticed an icon appearing in the upper left corner of the screen. It was the glittering Black Star Icon.
“Yes, right on schedule.” Bai Yan immediately understood what it meant.
[Notification]
“New Event: The Black Star Faction opens!” Bai Yan had never encountered this activity before.
Although he had completed the game once, there were still missions in the second playthrough he hadn’t seen before. The Babel Tower contained abundant random content. Each time the game restarted, he could experience many new missions.
“No, this isn’t just a game anymore,” Bai Yan muttered.
During his first playthrough of the Babel Tower, he had only obtained Nightsaber in the later stages. By then, the Black Star was already gone. There were no related missions or activities at all.
Through Nightsaber’s daily records, Bai Yan had learned considerable information about the Black Star Faction.
Black Star was an evil society devoted to the Chaos Star. Their influence extended throughout the Air Alliance, and they wielded tremendous power. Their leader in Tatsumi was a senior priest known as Mr. Mystery.
“He should be this event’s final boss.”
Bai Yan carefully opened the new activity. Soon, the game screen transformed into a map of Tatsumi City. The map was marked with six blinking red dots. Clearly, these were the new event checkpoints.
[Game Notification: Please select the latest level to begin!]
Bai Yan could only click on the first checkpoint – Visit the Vampire.
Soon a new prompt appeared.
[Game Notification: Please choose one booster as assistance for this stage. The other two will be included in the options for future mission help.]
The first stage offered three optional boosters: The Marquis Scarlet’s Secret, The Mysteries of Power–Photosynthesis, and Relic–Merlin’s Cloak.
“Note: core operators cannot fight continuously! Please arrange the battle order reasonably!” Bai Yan understood exactly how the game operated.
The Marquis Scarlet’s Secret would help him complete the mission easily, but choosing the other two boosters wasn’t impossible. However, it would be challenging.
After clearing the event, all chosen mysterious powers and relics could be obtained with a certain amount of energy power points… It was definitely worthwhile.
“If you want more, you must choose the latter two boosters. Then there’s no question at all.”
Bai Yan selected Merlin’s Cloak first.
Merlin’s Cloak: The cloak of the legendary great spellcasters. The wearer gains the ability to transform into various animals, even powerful magical beasts.
The Disguise Mask could only alter human shape and appearance. However, Merlin’s cloak could transform people’s bodies into animals or magical beasts with actual combat abilities.
[Game notification: The stage begins!]
“Let’s have some fun!”
On a stormy night.
Thunder and lightning intertwined, and fierce winds whipped the sudden rainfall like countless lashes. There was no sign of it subsiding.
Mu Ling stood calmly in the alley, black fire consuming the bodies behind her. It was the Black Star’s retaliation.
Recently, Mu Ling had eliminated enough cultists to anger the Black Star. She had just fought this group of cultists and sustained a minor shoulder injury, but it was insignificant for a hunter.
“Thank you, Master.” If this had happened half a month ago, she would certainly have perished. Mu Ling quietly glanced at the alley behind her and stepped away.
The storm-swept streets had long since emptied of pedestrians. In her dark raincoat, she moved alone.
The overwhelming raindrops nearly formed an airtight curtain, and her wounds gradually healed. Mu Ling contemplated her next move against the Black Star. As much as she yearned to destroy it and kill Mr. Mystery, she recognized it wasn’t feasible at this stage.
“Stay calm. You must learn patience, Nightsaber.” Mu Ling closed her eyes and tried to stop thinking about her family’s faces.
As for hoping the Savior would destroy the local Black Star, she dared not even consider it. She was just a nobody. How could a mysterious organization dedicated to saving the world help her?
At that moment, Mu Ling suddenly heard a familiar male voice in her mind.
[Nightsaber, Babel Tower is preparing to destroy the Black Star Faction here. You have been chosen as the executor.]
