Chapter 29: Recovery Spring
The black mist enveloped Maryse’s petite form. When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying in the large pink bed in her bedroom. The events that had just transpired remained vivid in her mind. It had been so long since she’d experienced such a feeling of protection.
Maryse sniffed, feeling somewhat pleased with herself.
Just slightly!
‘Listen here, Maryse! You’re only deceiving yourself. Don’t surrender to Babel Tower.’ She shook her head gently and sighed. Ultimately, she couldn’t convince herself that she was about to yield to the Babel Tower.
She reclined on the large bed with a smile, lifted her nightgown halfway, and scratched her fair skin.
‘Power, prestige, everything awaits me! Hehe, I can hardly wait!’
[Psychic Dancer, you shall enter the Babel Tower and heal your wounds in the Recovery Spring.]
“What?”
Maryse froze momentarily upon hearing the voice in her mind. Instinctively, she pulled her nightgown back down.
She was quite familiar with healing treatments, as her family possessed their own therapeutic pool. Anyone who rested in it would experience accelerated wound healing. Because the “magical water” in the therapeutic pool was incredibly costly, only Augustus family members were permitted to use it. Servants and guards were strictly forbidden.
“So, Babel Tower has its own healing pool. Does this mean I can enter the Tower itself?” Maryse wondered about Babel Tower’s interior appearance. She imagined it as a fortress-like magical tower, covered in mystical symbols, with electricity that would transform any casual trespassers into charred remains.
“How will I get there? Through the black mist?”
Maryse anticipated the black mist’s return. Instead, the “reality” before her began to fracture. The bed, cabinets, mirrors… Everything collapsed, separated, and reverted to its fundamental elements.
The world shattered and reconstructed itself in an instant. She watched intently until she confirmed she had entered a completely different realm from Noah.
A golden beach surrounded by white mist stretched before her. Three suns in the sky cast a gentle golden radiance.
“Where’s the Babel Tower?” Maryse felt bewildered. If this place was truly the legendary Babel Tower, was she still in Noah? Could this be another dimension?
Who was the Savior? Some ancient being who had survived into the modern age? Perhaps one of the Rainbows?
Origin, Might, Crown, Apocalypse, and Divine were the five levels of supernatural power in Noah.
Maryse muttered, “The Savior must be at least Apocalypse level. Otherwise, creating all this would be impossible.”
The breeze carried oceanic sounds and scents.
She felt an alluring pull, then stepped lightly onto the warm, soft golden sand.
“Here again.”
Mu Ling exhaled deeply. She had returned to the Babel Tower.
Once more, the Recovery Spring… Currently lacking clearance for other areas within Babel Tower, she could only remain here to rest.
‘I shall become stronger!’ Mu Ling encouraged herself.
Recently, she had been battling the Black Star. Sometimes, she would encounter other cultists concealed within the city.
Detecting cultists was Mu Ling’s specialty. She could sense anything connected to the Outer God.
She walked toward the ocean, knowing that the Recovery Spring inside Babel Tower was an illusory sea that wouldn’t dampen her clothes, so she kept her coat on.
Truth be told, she still suspected the Savior might be watching her, making her nervous during showers and bathroom visits. But upon careful consideration, she realized she might be overthinking. How could someone so mighty be so voyeuristic?
She approached the beach and suddenly noticed another presence nearby, quickly turning to identify them. She saw a beautiful elven girl.
The elf stood barely 1.4 meters tall. She positioned herself about a meter from the water’s edge and cautiously extended her small foot to test the water.
‘Could this be the Psychic Dancer?’ Mu Ling wondered. She had watched Babel Tower’s follow-up video and learned that besides herself, another female member called the Psychic Dancer existed.
Naturally, she believed this vast, mysterious organization employed more than two members.
They were merely pawns in the Savior’s grand design. Many other powerful figures likely existed.
Mu Ling had also discovered the cognitive filter’s power. Her previous precautions had proved futile… Though she lacked a cognitive filter, she remained confident in concealing her movements.
In fact, Mu Ling’s childhood villa existed beyond the world’s reach, hidden within the barrier. After brief consideration, she approached the girl and spoke hesitantly.
“Hello.”
“Ahh!” The little elf girl reacted like a startled cat whose tail had been stepped on. The sudden sound made her jump!
‘Who’s there?’ Maryse quickly spotted a girl emerging from the mist.
A white-haired girl with an alluring figure appeared, wearing a black trench coat with a familiar crucifix around her neck. Her amethyst pupils glowed red – bright yet serene.
Maryse narrowed her eyes and studied Mu Ling’s chest intently.
‘No, impossible!’
This was also Mu Ling’s first clear view of the elf girl. In the video, she had been merely a pixelated figure. She possessed an exquisite, beautiful face, perfectly maintained hair like golden silk, milk-white skin, and flawless emerald eyes.
‘Is she an angel?’ This was Mu Ling’s initial thought. Besides her childhood mirror reflections, she had never encountered such an adorable face.
‘She’s absolutely precious!’
Maryse caught Mu Ling’s thoughts and mentally scoffed. She had encountered plenty who judged solely on appearances.
She smiled sweetly and spoke in a childlike voice, “You must be Nightsaber. This is my first visit to Babel Tower. I didn’t expect it to look like this.”
In reality, they were roughly the same age.
“I don’t visit frequently,” Mu Ling replied evenly. “I’m Nightsaber.”
‘So you’re not much more experienced than me?’
“Nightsaber, where is the Recovery Spring?”
Maryse looked around. No spring was visible, only endless blue ocean and golden sand.
Mu Ling stated calmly, “This ocean is the Recovery Spring.”
Nightsaber instinctively reached out to stroke the little elf’s golden hair, but Maryse dodged.
Truthfully, despite this being their first meeting, Maryse wasn’t particularly impressed with Nightsaber.
She had been just a pixelated figure in the video. Yet Nightsaber had revealed her true face, garnering more supporters.
At that moment, Maryse heard Nightsaber’s thoughts.
[I’m not the only new member. I joined Babel Tower before her. I must protect her however I can.]
Maryse was slightly surprised. She pursed her lips. ‘Well, I’ll tolerate her today.’
“Saber, have you met other members?” she asked with a smile.
To Mu Ling, family and organization were similarly crucial. As a senior member, she naturally felt responsible for her juniors.
She replied evenly, “No, but I’ve met the master, the Savior… He’s an incredibly mysterious, powerful, and strict being.”
[And terrifying…]
‘Yes, I know. Powerful and especially frightening.’ Maryse nodded emphatically.
Mu Ling gazed at the ocean before them and said, “Simply walk into this sea, and you’ll feel… quite comfortable. It heals both body and spirit.”
[Next time, I’ll bring my swimsuit after hearing his voice.]
“I’ll try it!”
‘It should be safe. She’s surely not lying.’ Maryse carefully submerged her small feet in the blue water.
Her mouth parted slightly, and her eyes widened! A wonderful sensation spread from her toes throughout her body. It felt as blissful as returning to the womb.
Facing the endless calm sea, she seemed to perceive a gentle, magnificent light rising from where sky met ocean.
Unconsciously, Maryse relaxed completely, gradually allowing herself to submerge.
She felt like a handful of water merging with an infinite sea.
“Mom…” Unwittingly, Maryse had begun crying. When she emerged from her trance, she found herself lying on the golden beach.
Maryse felt more refreshed than ever before. The experience was unprecedented, and she remained dazed for some time.
She attempted to reenter the water, but the sensation had vanished.
“It only works once.” Maryse looked slightly disappointed.
Mu Ling had already left the sea. She sat quietly on the beach, gazing at the distant sky.
A faint golden light filtered through the fog overhead. Though little reached the ground, light persisted.
“What’s on your mind, Nightsaber?” Maryse asked.
[Why is a young girl involved? Those cursed ones didn’t spare children back then. It will be the same for her.]
[Even by human standards, she’s an adult, but for elves, she’s still a child.]
[This world needs change and salvation. And Babel Tower will deliver it.]
[I was chosen to replace those who shouldn’t have been fighting. To fight more.]
Mu Ling turned to Maryse and said neutrally, “I was just considering my next steps.”
[Savior, grant me more strength… For those requiring protection.]
Maryse sat up and studied Nightsaber. She hugged her knees and remained silent for a long while.
“Oh.”
‘She’s not a bad person after all.’
“I can…” Maryse wanted to reveal her thought-reading ability, but sudden nervousness made her clench her hands.
“No, never mind.”
