Chapter 27: The Girl in Pink Bunny Pajamas
The sky gradually darkened, and the number of people on the pedestrian street dwindled. Even though supernatural Otherworlds had appeared before the world, people still lived their usual lives.
A dozen men and women in black robes stood in the center of the promenade.
In the past, they would have been dismissed as cosplayers. However, Tatsumi had been far from peaceful lately, and people had learned about the existence of superpowers. Therefore, many observed them with wary glances.
‘Are they supernatural beings?’
Indeed, they were.
An apprentice said indignantly, “We’re merely bait for Mr. Weasley. If we act here, the DHA won’t show mercy.”
Another tall, red-haired apprentice sighed and shook her head. “What difference does it make? We may appear to be apprentices, but we’re nothing more than slaves to the patriarch. We’ll die if we disobey him, thanks to the Contract.”
All dark sorcerers followed the patriarch’s orders.
A true dark sorcerer enslaved numerous apprentices through “contracts.” This absolute slavery contract had to be signed by both parties completely voluntarily. Most apprentices were greedy enough to choose this path.
The apprentices could not disobey any orders from the patriarch. They would only obtain their freedom when their teacher, the patriarch, died. Some dark sorcerers were themselves slaves to another, more powerful patriarch, and so on. This system of domination had created the entire dark sorcerer’s world.
They looked indignant, trapped in limbo. It seemed hopeless.
“In that case, let’s kill more people.”
A bald man in the crowd spoke. Anger blazed in his eyes. He needed to vent!
The other apprentices were not innocent either. Most had committed unforgivable acts of evil.
“We have no choice! Let’s enjoy ourselves at the end.”
“I murdered a family last time. The father knelt and begged me to spare his son. The feeling of complete control filled me with joy… But such situations are rare. Today, I might recapture that excitement.”
“It’s all Babel Tower’s fault. They forced the patriarch to break the rules… Once we’re caught, we’ll die instantly because of the Contract. We can’t reveal anything about Mr. Weasley. The old fellow can indeed avoid consequences.”
The red-haired woman remained silent. ‘I wouldn’t have chosen this path if I hadn’t been terminally ill.’
Her name was Sella, and she was among the better ones of the many apprentices, yet Weasley had discarded her easily. The old man claimed he’d receive a great boon. He no longer needed apprentices.
Sella sighed. “Nothing can be done now. At least I’ve lived a few extra years. That’s enough.”
The patriarch, Weasley, intended to use them as bait to attract the DHA’s attention and thus complete his plan with Black Star. Only a miracle could change their fate.
‘It’s time. We must begin.’
The bald apprentice suddenly stepped forward and drew a deep breath. He reached toward a nearby parked car and chanted an ancient incantation.
“Flame, heed my prayer!”
Red-gold flames condensed in the bald man’s hand and roared toward the car, triggering an extremely violent explosion.
“Ah!”
Many nearby people were caught in the explosion. The soaring flames made the sky seem even brighter!
“Hahahahahaha! I’ve always wanted to do that! Let’s destroy everything!”
The bald man threw back his head and laughed maniacally. Death seemed to have given him tremendous motivation to destroy everything!
People fled in terror as the other black-robed figures acted, laughing sinisterly as they prepared to launch a devastating attack.
Sella remained motionless, showing no interest. As she observed the scene, a thought struck her.
“More individuals with superpowers will attempt to break the rules.”
People had already been injured. Cries and wails filled the air. Sella secretly extinguished the flames on a mother and daughter’s legs.
Suddenly, she and the other apprentices lost control and shouted in unison.
“We are all loyal to the master of the Babel Tower!”
The apprentices froze, confused by their outburst.
Sella, however, quickly understood. This was Weasley’s trap.
“He has formed an alliance with Black Star, so the Babel Tower considers us enemies.”
She wondered, what exactly was the Babel Tower?
Another inexplicable thought crossed Sella’s mind. ‘Could the Babel Tower have anticipated these events?
No, that’s impossible.’
This plan was the patriarch’s alone. The Contract bound the executors…
“Time for a true display of skill!”
A crisp, cheerful voice rang out. Sella, the bald man, and all the apprentices froze.
They watched as a little girl in a white mask approached slowly. Unlike the panicking crowd, she walked with calm determination.
She wore pink fluffy bunny pajamas and cute white bunny slippers. In her arms, she held a Pomeranian with red braids. The dog barked incessantly at the bald man.
“Woof, woof, woof, woof!” Maryse felt extremely tense. If she could move freely, she would have burrowed into the ground.
Though not her first mission, it was certainly her first in such an unusual outfit.
‘Thank goodness they don’t recognize me,’ she reassured herself.
Maryse had deduced that the Babel Tower possessed a cognitive filter. Otherwise, her father would have identified her already. Despite her matching abilities and lack of alibi, no family member suspected her.
Maryse marveled at the master’s power. The Savior was truly incomprehensible!
She knew that one of her family’s civilization-level relics, the Script of Pseudo, had a similar ability to directly modify people’s worldview and common sense.
For instance, it could make someone reverse their concepts of sex and eating.
Still, Maryse preferred her family’s other civilization-level relic, the Nidhogg’s Whine. That artifact possessed world-shaking power.
“It’s you!” The confrontation broke through the cognitive filter. The bald man suddenly realized who the little girl was – the operator of Babel Tower.
“She’s the Psychic Dancer from the Babel Tower!”
Shocked, the bald man immediately prepared to launch a fire spell at the little girl.
Lost in thought, Maryse’s body moved instinctively.
She stepped left and tilted her head slightly. Explosive fireballs whizzed past her ears. Maryse stared at the now-stunned bald man, her mind screaming. ‘Damn it, that was close!’
Still clutching the Pomeranian, her eyes beneath the mask shifted from green to silver-white as she fixed her gaze on the bald, black-robed man.
“Don’t look into her eyes!”
Sella shut her eyes and shouted a warning. She knew the Psychic Dancer would activate her mind control.
Too late. The bald man’s eyes had already glazed over. He had fallen under mind control. An angelic voice echoed from the depths of his soul like a demon.
[Become my pawn and attack your accomplices.]
Without hesitation, the bald man turned and launched a powerful fire attack at his two companions.
“Ah!”
Flames engulfed their bodies as screams erupted.
Soon others fell under the Psychic Dancer’s control, and they began to destroy each other.
The Black Sorcerer apprentices attempted to attack Maryse, but she evaded them effortlessly. The girl seemed to possess foresight! The apprentices’ screams filled the air!
Sella had retreated to a corner, sweating, waiting for the fight to end.
If she had to choose her death, she preferred avoiding immolation. She’d rather face the DHA’s execution. “I heard their method is painless…”
As Sella trembled and mumbled, she heard the dog bark.
“Woof, woof, woof, woof!”
First, she saw the white bunny slippers, then the cute pink bunny pajamas. Sella looked up to meet the silver eyes behind the mask.
The Pomeranian gazed at her curiously.
“Woof!”
“Hello, I heard your heart,” Maryse addressed the red-haired woman’s inner thoughts.
Truthfully, the bloodshed and violence overwhelmed her. She just wanted it to end quickly.
Sella’s eyes went blank as she succumbed to the psychic power.
Maryse stood in the street’s center, followed by Sella, the bald man, and another dark sorcerer’s apprentice. With a wave of her hand, a pale blue jewel fell from the bald man’s waist and shattered. It was a virtual bomb created through a special ritual, powerful enough to destroy the street. The apprentices had been unaware of its existence.
“Mission accomplished,” Maryse stated calmly.
Flames still blazed along the promenade. The crowd gradually recovered from their terror and turned toward Maryse. This enchanting girl had saved them.
Maryse felt their stares and heard countless thoughts.
“Is she an angel?”
“This girl saved us…”
“Thank you!”
She didn’t notice her lips curling slightly beneath the mask. She was growing more comfortable with everything about the Babel Tower.
At that moment, a harsh male voice cut through the air. “She’s the Psychic Dancer! Seize her!”
Maryse startled slightly, her heart sinking.
The DHA night watchmen had arrived.
