Chapter 265: “The Demon of Justice”
The gigantic, ever-expanding blob of flesh wriggled irregularly. It devoured everything in its path, sparing nothing—both living and non-living things alike became its nourishment.
Compared to inanimate objects, creatures with flesh and souls seemed far more suitable for its growth. It expanded relentlessly, crushing and consuming all in its way. Nothing could halt this terrifying process!
Thankfully, the area was devoid of people. In Dawn Park and the surrounding streets, the Night Watchers had already evacuated all creatures larger than a fist, along with most insects, using various methods. The monstrous blob loomed alone, a horrifying anomaly in a desolate landscape.
Even the Night Watchers, despite their best efforts, could do little against such an abomination. Their most crucial task was to ensure the safety of the public by clearing the area. In some sense, their efforts eased the burden on Bai Yan and his companions, enabling them to focus on the pressing threat.
But concealing the monstrosity entirely was impossible.
Towering over a hundred meters tall, its grotesque form loomed above the Dawn District. Those who saw it couldn’t help but document it in fear, whispering amongst themselves:
“What is that thing? Is it some new kind of monster?”
“It’s so massive… Am I imagining things, or is it growing even larger?”
“Don’t worry. As long as Babel Tower is here, nothing bad will happen.”
After a small group assembled near the park, an uneasy tension filled the air.
Scarlet Moon’s expression was distant and cold. She was visibly wary of Kessel, the “Emperor,” and Profligate, the deceptive individual who had previously tricked her. She made no effort to hide her distrust.
To Scarlet Moon, those outside her own kind were inherently untrustworthy.
Kessel, however, seemed unfazed. He recognized Scarlet Moon immediately: the renowned leader of the dark underworld in Tatsumi City and the ruler of a faction within the Scarlet Blood Clan.
In the past, Kessel had considered wiping out her clan entirely, angered by their frequent abuses of power. Yet, under the persuasion of the Demon Hunt Agency’s director, he abandoned that plan. After all, both the Agency and the Scarlet Blood Clan belonged to the side of order—albeit in their own unconventional ways.
At this moment, Kessel bore no grudge against Scarlet Moon.
“You don’t need to be so wary of me,” Kessel said calmly. “I mean no harm. Ask your companions—they’ll confirm it. My goal is simple: to eliminate these strange creatures as swiftly as possible. For now, our alliance with Babel Tower is temporary.”
Scarlet Moon snorted, her disdain evident. She had only recently repaid a favor to Profligate, yet she found herself bound to Babel Tower, stripped of her freedom. She shot a glare at Profligate, her annoyance palpable.
Bai Yan, observing the tense exchange, interjected with a soft smile, “Just trust me. Or, if not me, trust the Savior.”
“I believe you,” Maryse said instantly, smiling warmly. Her trust in Bai Yan was unshakable—perhaps even irrational—but her instincts left no room for doubt.
Scarlet Moon, however, remained unimpressed. To her, Profligate was a deceitful traitor, unworthy of trust. The so-called Savior of Babel Tower was an intangible, distant figure—one she couldn’t fully comprehend or accept.
Instead, she addressed Kessel
directly:
“Your code name is ‘Emperor,’
isn’t it? The most outstanding
member of the Imperial
Guards—the ‘Eyes of the
Empire.’ You’re also the most
powerful spiritual sorcerer of
the Air Alliance. I’ve heard
stories about you. Even the
‘Magician’ and the ‘Hanged
Man’ were once your students.”
Scarlet Moon’s tone turned icy.
“Yet, weren’t you an enemy of
Babel Tower not too long ago?”
Kessel met her gaze silently,
offering no immediate
response.
At that moment, Bai Yan
activated his newfound power.
[Believe in him.]
The irresistible command rang
in Scarlet Moon’s mind, and
her expression shifted slightly.
For the first time, she felt a
creeping fear—fear of a
presence so absolute it
dictated life and death.
Reluctantly, she dropped the
subject, turning her focus to
the monstrous blob of flesh.
“This thing… and the other
anomalies in Tatsumi City…
They’re becoming increasingly
bizarre. Each one more
dangerous than the last,” she
muttered.
Bai Yan’s eyes glimmered
faintly with black light as he
activated his ability, seeking
the creature’s “connections.”
The world seemed to shift—
threads of various colors
became visible, interwoven like
a vast web around the blob.
Among them, black threads
stood out starkly—
representing its weaknesses.
“Everything has a weakness,”
Bai Yan murmured. “Nothing
is invincible.”
He studied the connections
carefully, his concentration
unwavering. Finally, he spoke:
“I see it. Its rules only activate
fully against those with ill
intentions. If we can harm it
without malice, we might be
able to destroy it.”
Maryse frowned. “Without ill
intentions? How would that
even work?”
Scarlet Moon looked skeptical
but said nothing.
Kessel, however, stepped
forward with determination.
“Let me try.”
Reaching out, he touched the
creature. His most powerful
forbidden spell, “Distance of
the Hearts,” activated—a force
capable of isolating reality
itself. The silent collision of
energies triggered a
catastrophic chain reaction,
culminating in the monster’s
destruction.
As the group regained their
composure, Bai Yan stared into
the distance, his expression
thoughtful.
There was one last anomaly
left.
And beyond it, the truth behind
the Demon of Justice awaited.
