Chapter 26: Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Bai Yan thought quickly. He knew this question must have a purpose rather than being mere random nonsense.
Though they were merely having a casual conversation, Bai Yan never forgot his friend’s hidden identity.
He took a deep breath, certain that Alan would employ Detection of Lies during their subsequent conversation.
One shouldn’t forget to guard against potential harm.
Bai Yan said, “To be honest, I was shocked initially. I searched extensively online and repeatedly watched Babel Tower’s videos.”
“For so many years, I always felt that this world was nothing special, so empty and boring. Now I realize things are different.”
He continued, “I find it truly shocking and exciting.”
“But that’s all. Even if the world changes dramatically, the only thing I can do is accept it.”
With that, Bai Yan shifted to another topic.
“So, what do you think about these things? That supernatural organization must frighten you, right?”
Hearing this, Alan smiled complacently.
Bai Yan understood the meaning of Alan’s smile. It stemmed from the superpower’s subconscious sense of superiority over ordinary people, which carried no offense.
Alan must be thinking, “Hehe, you think it frightens me, but I already knew everything about the supernatural world.”
After a moment’s thought, Alan gazed at the night sky and replied, “I was thinking how amazing it would be if one day I could work for a supernatural organization, become one of their members, and experience a completely different world.”
“It must be very different from ordinary lives.”
“Oh, I see.” Bai Yan nodded noncommittally without elaborating.
Alan asked, “What? Have you never had the same thought?”
“Of course.”
Bai Yan didn’t deny his desire for superpowers, as it couldn’t be considered a serious accusation.
Alan stared into his eyes and said, “I knew you always harbored a hatred for mediocrity.”
Bai Yan neither confirmed nor denied this. He sensed that Alan’s intention might not be interrogation but something else entirely.
After a while, Bai Yan excused himself to use the bathroom.
Now only Alan and Lin Bian remained on the balcony.
“So, you want him to join the Demon Hunt Agency?”
Lin Bian looked at the blond man beside him and patted Alan’s shoulder.
“Why?”
Gazing at the night sky, Alan said, “He has immense potential, but I’m still hesitant. I don’t want to disturb his life… However, the world is about to experience a massive upheaval. Perhaps it’s better to inform him about superpowers in advance…if both of us vouch for him, he can immediately become a Night Watchman.”
Lin Bian frowned, “I didn’t realize you two were this close. But there’s no need for that because I will never agree to it.”
“Why?” Alan was utterly stunned.
“Because of intuition. I don’t like him.”
Lin Bian couldn’t provide any specific reason. He only knew that his INT-enhanced intuition often proved more reliable than logic.
“Fine, then you can’t have this.” Alan suddenly withdrew Lin Bian’s glass.
“Tch, petty.”
Lin Bian was at a loss for words. Then he conjured a spider robot the size of a washbowl.
“It’s a gift, a spider automated battle machine from Night Union…the country is deteriorating under those companies’ control. It will eventually lead to disaster.”
He handed the robot to the stunned Alan.
“Thank you. I didn’t expect to see your sensitive side…”
Alan touched his face and returned the glass to Lin Bian. Then he excitedly placed the robot on the ground and activated it.
A host, dressed garishly in a vulgar manner, appeared in the hologram.
“Good morning, Night Union! So many opportunities and possibilities here! And you are the interpreter of your dreams!”
Alan and Lin Bian exchanged looks of speechless despair.
“The manual states that every time you activate it, you must wait until the advertisements finish before the robot operates normally, unless… you purchase the yearly VIP of Noy Military.”
Bai Yan entered the bathroom, and something occurred to him. He attempted to walk four steps backward.
However, nothing happened.
He shrugged, took out his phone, and checked the auto-play profits.
“Daily record for Nightsaber.”
“Slight weight gain. Eat weight loss salad for dinner. Mood -1.”
“Increase in bust size.”
“Failed to find cultists at night. Wonder whether the Savior needs to use the bathroom.”
Bai Yan was completely speechless.
‘Why doesn’t her Mood increase when she learns that her bust size increased? Isn’t that a good thing? She doesn’t care about it at all?’
‘Also, stop imagining me using the bathroom!’
“Daily record for Psychic Dancer.”
“Forced to eat Escargots for dinner and feels ill. Mood -1.”
“Eat chow mein in secret. Mood +1.”
“Shocked by Nightsaber’s body figure in the video. Mood -1.”
Bai Yan sighed and did a facepalm.
He had noticed the reason for Psychic Dancer’s Mood decrease many times in previous daily records.
‘Why are you so concerned about it?’
Just then, a random mission appeared.
‘Who should I choose to send into battle?’
The random mission set Bai Yan thinking.
Nightsaber had been fatigued recently, as she was consistently hardworking.
But this Psychic Dancer…Bai Yan didn’t know her real identity. She didn’t attend school, didn’t work, and didn’t even train herself!
It truly annoyed Bai Yan. If character Ranks could be edited manually, he would have immediately given her a Rank titled “Anti-work Queen”!
“I choose you! Get up and complete the mission!”
The random mission was a battle assignment, and the enemy consisted of criminals who had acquired superpowers.
Humanoid monsters weren’t limited to cultists. In Babel Tower or this world, many people behaved unscrupulously after gaining superpowers.
There were more than a dozen humanoid monsters, titled “Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentices.”
Many pixel villains in black robes appeared on the phone screen, resembling standard enemies.
Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentice possessed two different attacks. The first was rapidly firing flame bombs, which gradually reduced HP upon impact.
The second was summoning a slow phantom that moved forward, exploding immediately upon approaching a Core Operator. It had larger AOE and higher damage.
“Go!”
Bai Yan securely locked the bathroom door and focused on directing Psychic Dancer in battle.
The battle location was a pedestrian street, so there were numerous onlookers.
The mission requirement stated: Defeat all Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentices within the specified time and stop a virtual bomb from exploding.
There was a bomb…Bai Yan took a deep breath, knowing the situation was serious and failure wasn’t an option.
“Time for a true display of skill!” The pixel girl announced.
Psychic Dancer’s ability was formidable. Using Psychic Domination to command others to suicide, she could eliminate the Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentices within seconds.
One characteristic of humanoid monsters was their typically low HP.
Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentices weren’t particularly powerful. Psychic Dancer could defeat them easily.
The challenge was that Psychic Dancer’s HP was extremely low. Given her STR of only 5, two flame bombs or a phantom explosion would prove fatal.
It was one girl against many, and Psychic Dancer needed to evade all attacks. One moment of carelessness near a corner would result in destruction by a barrage of flame bombs.
Bai Yan knew that brute force wasn’t Psychic Dancer’s style. He directed her to use Psychic Domination on the monsters. Some began attacking their companions, creating massive chaos.
The Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentices started eliminating each other. Suddenly, their bodies were blown to pieces. Humanoid monsters with low HP were easily defeated.
Success!
Bai Yan quickly maneuvered Psychic Dancer to deactivate the pixel bomb after the battle.
“Victory, Babel Tower Legendary Point +50.”
“Successfully captured 3 Dark Sorcerer’s Apprentices.”
“Mission reward received. Mystical Power: Unlimited Ammunition.”
Bai Yan muttered, “The effects of Psychic Domination on regular enemies are too powerful.”
Unlimited Ammunition was a limited ability that literally provided Core Operators with infinite ammo. However, this ability suited only a small number of Core Operators.
Finally, Bai Yan sent both girls to the spring together to restore their Mood.
It was Psychic Dancer’s first visit to the Recovery Spring. Bai Yan wondered if she would encounter Nightsaber.
‘What would they say to each other?’
Maryse was playing with her pets in the pet room.
This light green pet room measured about fifty square meters, with plants covering the ground. It housed three cats and four dogs, while fish and birds occupied another pet room.
Maryse was holding a tiny Pomeranian and giggling. The dog gazed at her.
“Actually, I prefer dogs to humans…After all, your minds are simpler. You only want to eat, drink, play, and breed.”
“Well, I’m somewhat like a pet now…it’s unfortunate you can’t understand me, but I think I’d be annoyed if you could.”
She smiled but suddenly lost control of her body.
Again?
Maryse’s expression changed. Without hesitation, she turned and walked out of the room, still holding the Pomeranian.
Irena, her maid nearby, was perplexed by the lady’s sudden behavior.
Maryse was internally devastated again.
‘Wait! Wait! At least let me put down my dog!’
‘Help!’
‘You’d better hope I don’t find you, Savior! Or I’ll definitely…give you a proper massage.’
Maryse walked helplessly, yet felt somewhat excited simultaneously.
‘Will I receive another reward this time?’
