Chapter 209: New Gameplay – Achievement System
The Achievement system is a new feature added in the second playthrough.
To be honest, the more new elements are introduced, the more Bai Yan feels an intangible pressure mounting on him. The main storyline mission, “Doomsday Crisis,” in the second playthrough hasn’t even officially begun yet. No one knows how vast the crisis will be or how terrifying the challenges it will bring.
Theoretically, “Babel Tower” is like a snowball game. The start is so promising that, as long as they survive the First Doomsday Crisis, everything should get progressively easier.
“But in the real world, will everything truly be under the control of ‘Babel Tower’… The difficulty of the second playthrough is probably not the same as the first.”
Bai Yan clicked and browsed through the list provided by Babel Tower, discovering hundreds of achievements. Many of these were unique and exceptionally difficult to accomplish, with some so challenging they seemed almost absurd.
“I took a look and saw a bunch of messy and disorganized achievements…”
Bai Yan quickly realized that the achievements were divided into three categories: white, purple, and gold.
Gold achievements are the most difficult to complete and offer significant rewards. Purple achievements are relatively easier with decent rewards, while white achievements are the easiest with the least rewards.
Among them, the “Mastermind behind the Lonely City” is a white achievement with low difficulty and minimal rewards.
He kept scrolling.
“Well, there’s a gold achievement named ‘Shadow Emperor.’ Just by reading the name, one can tell it’s very difficult.”
The task requires players to secretly manipulate the leader of the Air Alliance, aiming to influence the entire country. The reward is 5,500 Legend Points. Though it sounds challenging, there will be opportunities to complete it toward the end of the game.
Another gold achievement, “Spawn Terminator,” requires players to kill at least one Spawn of every Outer God and rewards 3,000 Legend Points.
Bai Yan fell into thought. Killing them is not difficult, but encountering so many bizarre Spawns is quite challenging. Many Spawns reside in different worlds, and summoning them often requires a cultist’s assistance. To encounter all the Spawns under the 27 Outer Gods would require a lot of luck.
He continued reading, realizing that none of the gold achievements were worth considering at the moment.
Then came the purple achievements.
“Hey, this one can be completed!” Bai Yan’s eyes lit up.
The purple achievement, “Unfortunate Someone,” requires one Core Operator to die five times while others stay alive. It rewards 1,200 Source Energy Points.
Bai Yan immediately calculated the Source Energy Points needed for each resurrection of “Psychic Dancer.” She only needed to die four more times to reach the necessary amount.
However, it’s still not worth it—it would be a loss.
“It’s a shame that after upgrading ‘Psychic Dancer,’ the Source Energy required to resurrect her has also increased.”
Shaking his head, Bai Yan thought, “Forget it. As a kind boss, how could I let my beloved subordinates die just for the sake of Source Energy Points!”
The purple achievement, “Art of Bombing,” requires at least five Core Operators to use the Astarte Sacred Rune 20 times each. It rewards 1,000 Source Energy Points…
One thousand! Two sets of ten consecutive draws!
This achievement seems relatively easy to complete. He was tempted but decided against it.
Bai Yan continued browsing and eventually found two achievements that were relatively easy to complete immediately. They came with rewards and wouldn’t put anyone in harm’s way.
His attention was caught by a white achievement.
The white achievement, “Money Talks,” requires Core Operators to spend at least 100 million credits in a single day. It rewards 150 Source Energy Points.
Upon seeing this, Bai Yan’s lips curled into a perfect smile.
“For me, someone who has drawn ‘Cybertyrant,’ this is an easy achievement. Things are looking up.”
He realized something: to some extent, he had become a wealthy man.
Bai Yan had been poor for a long time. In his past life, he started as an orphan. He met Alan by picking up garbage and managed to eat, drink, and even pay for school by deceiving him. Even after starting school, Bai Yan lived a poor life, renting a small room while being uncomfortable under Alan’s roof.
He had always been a hedonist but had to bow his head.
Poverty was a disease that left people helpless.
But for the current Bai Yan, accumulating money was no longer an issue. The changes brought by Babel Tower felt miraculous.
He steadied his thoughts, deciding to complete the “Money Talks” achievement first before thinking about anything else.
The issue was that Bai Yan wasn’t a Core Operator of Babel Tower. He couldn’t complete the task or gain rewards by spending the money himself.
Someone else had to spend it on his behalf.
He wondered: Should he choose Cybertyrant?
“But she should keep a low profile now. It’s better not to randomly hack into financial systems to avoid being found by the company’s lackeys, ‘Maintainers.'”
So, Bai Yan chose “Psychic Dancer” to complete the task for him.
It was decided: it’s her.
Meanwhile, Maryse lay on her familiar big bed, wearing white silk stockings and underwear. She stretched her limbs and rolled over, then flipped back like a pancake with cream on top.
Now, Maryse was in a state of pure joy!
Not only had she returned to her family, but with the help of the Savior, she had also become the so-called Shadow Patriarch. Soon, she would elevate to a Crown-level transcendent being. The future was bright!
Feeling relaxed, she scratched her belly and thought she could take it easy for a few days and just procrastinate.
“Feels nice…”
But when she needed to pee, she finally got up, put on her coat, and headed for the restroom.
“I’ve been training my superhuman strength almost every day for a while. Now that I’m taking a break, I hope the Savior won’t catch me slacking off…”
[Psychic Dancer.]
The sudden, cold voice in her mind startled Maryse so much she almost peed herself. Her face twisted with displeasure. It seemed the Savior had caught her trying to slack off.
[New mission: Immediately spend one hundred million dollars.]
Maryse was dumbfounded.
What? Why?
Was this some sort of ritual? She wasn’t sure but thought it was a possibility.
Regardless, she had to complete the task, or else there might be punishment from the Savior.
“Come to think of it, even without punishment, I’ve been humiliated enough already. If he truly punishes me, I might die on the spot…”
Sighing, she sat down on the toilet, lost in thought.
Where could she get a billion from?
She suddenly remembered: Let Phoenix transfer the money!
The Augustus family, one of the five major families of Tatsumi City, monopolized the medical and pharmaceutical industries. Coming up with a hundred million would be easy for them.
“If Phoenix knew this money was being donated to the Savior, he’d probably add another billion.”
Just then, Maryse’s phone rang. She picked it up and saw the bank had alerted her: 100 million Air Alliance currency had been transferred to her account. Her current balance was 102,052,000.45.
What was this? The money was already prepared. Now, the question was: how should she spend it?
She thought for a moment and sent a text to her maid, Irena, who had returned to school.
The sound of flowing water echoed.
As a personal maid to the offspring of a great family, Irena had been trained from childhood in intelligence gathering and had an invaluable network of high-level servants.
Soon, Maryse received a reply with a simple webpage listing items, many of which were very expensive, starting from a million yuan. Even relics were being sold!
She froze for a moment and then realized the webpage was established by the “Shadow Association”!
The Shadow Association, the largest intelligence organization of the Air Alliance, was led by someone known as the “Secret Box” — Ms. Peggie. It was said that no intelligence could escape their grasp, and they were always lurking behind major events.
Maryse felt a chill.
She still remembered Ms. Peggie’s advances toward her, and a shiver ran down her spine.
Given the choice, she didn’t want any contact with Ms. Peggie at all.
“Well, I still have to complete the Savior’s mission…”
She gritted her teeth, browsing the page, and found that the Shadow Association offered a variety of goods. However, most of them were low-grade transcendence-related items like cursed materials and ritual spellcasting components. Only one or two high-grade relics were available for sale.
Civilization-level relics were considered strategic-level and couldn’t be sold online. Forces had to engage in multiple rounds of negotiation to obtain them.
Maryse knew that her family had only managed to accumulate two Civilization-level relics over thousands of years. It was nearly impossible for ordinary transcendent beings to obtain one.
However, for the mysterious Babel Tower, she imagined, a Civilization-level relic might as well be an everyday item!
She stood up, deciding, “Well, I’ll just buy something non-transcendence-related, like a yacht or something expensive.”
With the 100 million, Maryse quickly spent it on the website.
She didn’t need to worry about anything else — Irena would take care of the details. That’s the benefit of having a personal maid.
After coming out of the bathroom, Maryse continued to lie on her bed, feeling a little strange.
“Why are there still tasks like this?”
She had never done something like this before, but at least now she had completed the mission and wouldn’t be punished.
Just a moment.
Even if she hadn’t completed the task, what would the Savior do to her?
The achievement “Money Talks” was unlocked, and Bai Yan received 150 Source Energy Points.
He was thrilled.
Unlocking this achievement could be easy or hard, depending on the situation.
For Bai Yan, who had “Cybertyrant” and the ability to manipulate networks, it was a breeze.
There was another achievement that could be completed today.
The white achievement “Cult Exterminator” required killing 500 cultists (499/500), rewarding 150 Legend Points.
Bai Yan realized that Babel Tower had killed so many cultists in just over two months. No wonder the Black Star Faction and the Church of Ruins were so concerning…
“One more!” he thought. One more cultist and the achievement would be his!
However, cultists were hidden in various corners of the city, making them hard to track.
Bai Yan also noticed the purple achievement “Cult Killer” and the gold achievement “Nemesis of Cultists.”
“In the future, when fighting alongside them under the identity of ‘Profligate,’ I’ll try to minimize my kills and let them handle it instead.”
Since Bai Yan himself wasn’t a Core Operator, his kills wouldn’t count toward the achievement.
Then, Bai Yan realized a way to quickly gather the remaining cultists.
There was a place where many cultists existed, but they had no resistance.
“Once I complete this achievement, the Source Energy Points will allow me to summon immediately.”
Summon! Summon! Summon! Today!
[Mysterious Magic, immediately kills a cultist from the Demon Hunt Agency.]
Bai Yan gave the order to Alan, who was sitting in the office attending a meeting.
The sudden command startled Alan. While the Demon Hunt Agency held many cultists, why was he being asked to kill one immediately?
Lin Bian, organizing the meeting, noticed Alan standing up.
Alan didn’t explain, only muttering about feeling unwell from overindulgence and rushing to the restroom.
Lin Bian wasn’t pleased with the vague excuse. “Is this kid trying to slip away?”
However, Alan didn’t care and left the office.
In the underground prison of the Demon Hunt Agency, many cultists were imprisoned, including an old man with a notorious criminal history.
“Why are you here? Young Night Watcher…”
The old man looked surprised to see Alan, wearing a purple suit and a smiling mask.
Alan knew this old man’s crimes were severe, and death was his only fitting fate.
Alan had never seen a true punishment carried out by Babel Tower’s Core Operators, but the Savior’s growing influence had made many subconsciously eager to complete tasks.
Forgetting that they were once
manipulated.
Alan realized that killing here
would be monitored. He would
have to find another way.
He stared at the old man, then
turned and left.
“Come back! Why did you look
at me just now?”
Confused and frightened, the
old man approached the
barrier, calling after Alan.
Suddenly, he spat blood and
collapsed in pain, realizing too
late that he had been
dreaming.
The pain, however, felt all too
real.
Meanwhile, Alan, sitting in the
restroom, knew the old man
had already died.
The underground surveillance
system couldn’t detect his
invisible curse—”Nightmare.”
Alan had secretly learned the
curse from his colleagues in
the Demon Hunt Agency,
honing his skills with the Pupil
of Mystery.
