Chapter 172: The Fifth Core Operator!
Although only a few days had passed since the release of “Cybertyrant”, Bai Yan felt as if it had been much longer since a new Core Operator had graced the roster.
“It has to happen this time!” he thought to himself with a mix of determination and anticipation.
And yet, just as every summoning event rolled around, another thought came to mind:
“I think this exact same thing every single time.”
Before diving into the summoning, Bai Yan decided to first handle the lingering matter of the cult’s stronghold.
The Church of Ruins stronghold had the outward appearance of a typical health center. However, unlike real health centers staffed by ordinary people, every worker here was a cultist hiding behind a carefully curated facade.
Even so, the building wasn’t empty. Many ordinary civilians, deceived into coming here, lingered inside. Some of the cultists had even camouflaged themselves among the frightened masses, desperately hoping to escape unnoticed.
But under the scrutiny of Bai Yan’s spiritual perception, such ploys were useless.
Bai Yan approached a young female cultist who cowered on the ground. Her appearance was unremarkable, but her trembling frame and tear-streaked face painted a pitiable picture.
“Tell me, what vile deeds have you committed?” Bai Yan’s voice was soft, almost gentle.
The woman did not answer, her lips quivering as she muttered, “Please, spare me… I beg you…”
Her pleas were laced with false charm and desperation. Despite her attempts to feign innocence, Bai Yan’s spiritual perception saw through her façade, exposing the foulness lurking within her heart.
He nodded lightly, reaching out as if to help her up.
In the next instant, Black Flames of Destruction roared to life, engulfing the woman in an inferno. Her agonized screams echoed through the halls as the flames consumed her entirely.
The remaining civilians, huddled in fear, watched the scene unfold. To them, this young man in a black robe seemed more like a villain than a savior—cruel, ruthless, and utterly unyielding.
As for the cultists who tried to blend in, Bai Yan continued his methodical approach, exposing and eliminating them one by one.
Just as Bai Yan was preparing to deal with another hidden cultist, he sensed an approaching presence.
“Ah, I almost forgot. Those people are bound to show up too.”
Standing silently before him was Raven Reaper, one of the prominent Night Watchers.
Raven Reaper’s gaze shifted to the charred remains of the woman. His tone was calm yet piercing as he asked, “Are you certain she deserved to die?”
Bai Yan met the question with a nonchalant smile. “If I made a mistake and killed an innocent… Well, I promise it won’t happen again.”
It was clear to Raven Reaper that Bai Yan’s moral compass was dubious at best. Yet, as dangerous as Bai Yan appeared, it was his lack of clear principles that made him even more unnerving.
Still, Raven Reaper’s presence here wasn’t to fight.
“Profligate, your black flames are far too conspicuous. We arrived quickly because of them,” Raven Reaper stated, his voice calm.
Bai Yan nodded. “I figured as much. So, what now? Are we going to clash?”
The air between them was tense, but Raven Reaper shook his head. “No. I volunteered to come in place of Lin Bian because I want to prevent any further conflict between the Night Watchers and Babel Tower.”
“Oh? So you’re capable of reason after all. Are you proposing a collaboration?” Bai Yan raised an eyebrow, his tone laced with intrigue.
Raven Reaper sighed. “I’ve worked with Mu Ling before. I’m open to continued dialogue and cooperation with Babel Tower. Everything I do is for the people of the Air Alliance, and I have no regrets about that.”
Bai Yan nodded thoughtfully. “Alright, we can collaborate. But I have one condition.”
“What is it?” Raven Reaper’s instincts sharpened, wary of potential traps hidden within Bai Yan’s words.
“I want to see your face,” Bai Yan said, his voice calm but filled with curiosity.
Raven Reaper hesitated. This was not the kind of request he had expected.
After a long pause, Raven Reaper relented.
“Fine.”
With deliberate movements, he removed his bronze mask, revealing a face of breathtaking beauty. His features were delicate and flawless, his golden hair shimmering like sunlight, and his sapphire eyes carrying a depth that rivaled the ocean.
Bai Yan blinked in surprise. “Wait… are you a woman?”
Raven Reaper’s voice turned icy. “No. I am a man.”
Bai Yan chuckled. “Ah, I see. I understand now why you wear a mask. It’s a good secret—I’m satisfied.”
Without waiting for a reply, Bai Yan handed Raven Reaper a slip of paper with his contact details.
“Here’s how to reach me. I’ll leave the rest to you.”
Before Raven Reaper could
respond, Bai Yan disappeared,
leaving him alone in the
stronghold.
Returning to the villa, Bai Yan
wasted no time. With
anticipation bubbling in his
chest, he opened the “Destiny”
summoning pool on his phone.
“Ten summons in a row. Let’s
go!”
As black mist swirled around
the cards, Bai Yan eagerly
flipped them over one by one:
Operator Fragment: Moon
Witch ×1
Operator Fragment: Innocent
Singer ×1
Operator Fragment: Fist of
Duel ×1
Operator Fragment: Dead
Insane Warrior Red Moon ×1
Operator Fragment: Sword of
Demons ×1
Relic Fragment: Gungnir ×1
Mystical Power Fragment:
Manipulation of Reality ×1
Relic Fragment: Wishing Lamp
×1
Relic Fragment: Blink Blade ×1
Operator Fragment: Queen of
the Scarlet Moon ×1
Bai Yan frowned. “This… is a
complete failure. Nothing
significant came out.”
He sighed but quickly
brightened. “Fortunately, I still
have the ‘Regret Card.'”
After deliberating, Bai Yan
redeemed the card fragments
he needed most.
Finally, the last card appeared.
“Core Operator: Fusion Slime!”
A satisfied smile broke across
Bai Yan’s face.
“The fifth Core Operator… has
arrived.”
