Chapter 16: Fire
‘That was a good question. If you ask me this or that, the pity of the world is what responds! I’m the evil outlander! I’m the greedy ninja! This world begins with me and ends with me. I am the game player!’
Though these thoughts ran through his mind, Bai Yan remained silent, maintaining his composure in front of Nightsaber. He merely glanced at No. Nine and said, “Work it out for yourself. You can imagine whatever you want.”
Before No. Nine could react, Mu Ling had already risen. A cold aura emanated from her as she slowly raised the black cross blade.
“Face your sins!”
Deep Blue World.
In an instant, everything turned dark blue. Even Mu Ling’s eyes took on the same hue.
No. Nine, who had been raving moments before, found himself paralyzed. Still staring at Bai Yan, he hadn’t realized that time had stopped. The birds, insects, students, and even the light outside the classroom were frozen in that moment.
Mu Ling wanted to turn back to look, curious whether the Savior was affected by the time stagnation. However, she quickly realized she couldn’t control her body, which meant the Savior still moved freely. His power exceeded her imagination! The Babel Tower was truly unfathomable!
As the Savior controlled her body, she could indulge in her thoughts. But the pitch-black sword never ceased its motion!
“BOOM!”
No. Nine felt a tremendous force nearly tear him apart. His body crashed through the window and flew out of the classroom, thrown like a bloodied rag doll. He landed on the clean, neat stone path, a large wound viciously split open in his abdomen. Bright red blood and internal organs spilled freely.
Despite the mortal wound, the bald man showed no sign of pain or concern. To him, it seemed no more than a minor setback.
Many people outside the school building witnessed this terrifying scene – mostly students and teachers returning from the canteen and grounds.
“Ah!”
Horrified screams filled the air as someone immediately called the police.
“What the hell is going on? I didn’t see her moving at all,” No. Nine muttered to himself, unable to comprehend the situation. “How could she move so fast?”
He decided it would be better to fight another time.
Standing up, he announced loudly, “Stop it. More people are gathering here. DHA will be here soon.” He planned to retreat.
DHA had established rules requiring superpowers to avoid exposure to ordinary people whenever possible. Pastor and Queen of Scarlet Moon, the two powerful figures in Tatsumi, preferred a comfortable and stable life. They’d decreed that supernatural matters in Tatsumi fell under the Otherworlds’ jurisdiction and couldn’t be carelessly exposed to ordinary citizens.
Breaking these rules meant severe punishment. If he continued fighting with Mu Ling, it would undoubtedly create enemies for the Black Star. Though No. Nine was confident the Black Star would eventually control Tatsumi, it wasn’t wise to antagonize these two terrifying “monsters” now.
“Stop now! You don’t want to make many enemies for Babel Tower, right?” As soon as he said it, a thought struck him. ‘Since Babel Tower had uploaded videos related to superpowers online, perhaps their original intention was to break the rules?’
White hair and white mask.
Black trench coat and broadsword.
She flashed out of the broken window like black lightning. The broadsword seemed weightless as a storm of swords enveloped the area in the blink of an eye.
No. Nine’s pupils dilated!
“Ah!”
With a loud roar, he was forced to activate his pact!
“Blood pact!”
“Child of the Star!”
His body instantly swelled to several meters tall, and disgusting squirming tentacles grew from various parts. The students were terrified!
He resembled a massive octopus, mumbling in an incomprehensible language. Dozens of sticky, slippery tentacles kept waving as all his wounds healed. The Child of the Star was a servant of the great Chaotic Star. He would reveal his true form!
The surrounding students, phones already drawn, retreated one by one. Many began to lose their minds – shouting, laughing, and crying.
Bai Yan observed everything from the classroom, hearing the strange, incomprehensible voices. Though shocked, his body and mind showed no adverse reactions.
“There are even more witnesses than last time on Center Avenue,” Bai Yan realized quickly.
The entire school had just finished eating and was preparing for class or returning to dormitories. The monsters on campus had attracted everyone’s attention!
Mu Ling stood calmly before the school building, facing the huge monster that towered more than ten meters high. The road echoed with the sound of camera shutters.
‘From today, my normal life might be over.’
Even with the mask, her physical characteristics were too obvious to disguise. She’d known this day would come and didn’t feel particularly sorry about it.
Next… Fight!
Mu Ling suddenly felt control of her body return. She took the initiative, rushing toward the monster.
“Ow!”
The huge Child of Star roared and swung its tentacles down viciously, but the black blades cut through them mercilessly. However, the physical attacks had minimal effect. The true body of the Child of Star belonged to a shifter race – the broken tentacles regenerated immediately.
‘How did that happen?’ Mu Ling wondered.
[Nightsaber, I grant you fire.]
‘It was him!’ Hearing this voice, Mu Ling immediately felt reassured. In the next moment, scorching golden flames rose from her black sword.
“So fire’s your weakness,” she said, now able to speak.
Mu Ling suddenly jumped more than ten meters into the air while everyone watched, stunned. As they looked skyward, everything around seemed to disappear.
She spun around in the air and descended like a spinning fire dragon, rushing directly at the monster. She frantically carved long golden scars across the Child of Star’s body.
“Awwwwwwwww!” The monster howled.
The fire, combined with the sword’s spinning power, tore the Child of Star’s body apart instantly. Burning debris rained from the sky, turning to ashes.
The monster collapsed, near death.
Mu Ling landed gracefully, holding the sword in one hand, emanating a strange charm.
“Time to end it,” she muttered, raising the black cross blade again. Just as she prepared to crush the monster’s head, something unusual occurred.
A white light appeared on the horizon, like a tunnel cutting through the sky. It shone on the monster’s head and pulled it skyward.
Soon the monster vanished.
Mu Ling stood stunned – someone had rescued the monster.
She realized she couldn’t move again. Sheathing her sword, she spoke softly, “Mission accomplished.”
The black mist reappeared and pulled her in. Clearly, the DHA would arrive too late.
The students erupted in an uproar, countless voices discussing what had transpired. Their voices echoed throughout the university. Bai Yan calmly recorded everything on his phone from the classroom.
He stared at his phone, lost in thought. ‘I see. This is what happens when the game reflects reality.’ Bai Yan smiled unconsciously as he listened to the heated discussion.
The sense of emptiness and alienation he’d felt since arriving in this world had finally diminished somewhat.
Suddenly, someone tapped his shoulder. Bai Yan startled and instinctively turned around.
“Are you all right?” Alan looked at him, breathless and worried. He’d obviously just run back. “I can’t believe something this big happened while I was treating the girl to dinner. By the way, are you okay, Bai Yan? You’ve been daydreaming here.”
Bai Yan nodded and said calmly, “I’m fine. I was just a little frightened.”
Alan paused. He sensed something different about Bai Yan – something that would never be the same again.
“Phew. Thank god.” Alan shook his head, slightly relieved. Then he turned to look out of the classroom, falling into a long silence. He needed a drink.
There was probably no way to cover this up. In fact, even the previous incident hadn’t been completely resolved.
Information spread too quickly in the Internet age. The mystery of superpowers would have been exposed eventually, but Alan hadn’t expected it to happen so soon.
“The storm is coming, Bai Yan,” he muttered.
“Then I’ll sell umbrellas,” Bai Yan smiled.
Night.
Bai Yan lay in bed for a long time, unable to sleep. He kept thinking about the day’s events.
The supernatural was happening right beside him. The powerful black-clothed, white-haired girl had bowed to him. A cultist had transformed into a monster and wreaked havoc at the school. And now the world would know everything.
The boredom and emptiness that had accumulated over thirteen years were fading. He felt excited now.
‘Forget it. Time to sleep.’ Bai Yan shook his head and closed his eyes.
“… this is the last time.” He reached for his phone by the pillow and browsed. Immediately, he couldn’t sleep.
It’s trending!
